K92
What an incredible night. I am sure we will be talking about it for years to come. You could not have written a more compelling script...last Thursday night a lot of people had this team dead & buried. Well, I guess there just wasn't quite enough dirt kicked down in that hole. KD did a great job with the game plans at the Q and a great job circling the wagons and rallying the team. I felt so happy for the team, staff and fans. Going down on the floor, I don't know if I have ever seen that many happy people in one spot before. Watching Zeke interact with all the kids who wanted his autograph was priceless. What a gracious person.

What a gracious person. Well said, K92! This has to rank up there with the 2005 football championship and the 2011 victory over K.E.N.T. in the MAC tourney championship as my all-time Zip moments. This is a compel!ling story for the ages. Let's keep it gong, Zips! Another chapter is underway!
Big Zip
That was as dominating of a second half as I have seen Akron play. I hope the tournament committee was watching last night. I went from the game to a St Patricks Day party and everyone wanted to talk with me about the game and the team. Funny how non-partisan bystanders wanted to know what seed I thought they'd get they were all shocked when I said 13. They told me no way....funny how a 13 means the committee thinks you are between the 49-52 best team in the country which is ridiculous! odhgibo
Worst officiated game ever. OU is knocking our guys down, holding their arms and they call us! Must disagree, AZ71. There was quite a bit of hand-to-hand combat both directions, and the officials (Carstensen, Mayborg and Ek) tried to let them play. Nevertheless, many of the players still couldn't stay out of trouble. The call that led to Tree's T was matter of angles. Mayborg made the call from the baseline. I had the mirror image view (sitting next to the TV cameras) and could see how the OU player somewhat undercut Tree. That would not have been visible to Mayborg. Once the call was made and Tree slapped the floor, the T had to be called. Did anyone else notice that the Big 10 now is using guys that we saw at the MAC tournament 5-6 years ago? Wymer even worked the championship game today w/ Kitts & Valentine.
Z.I.P.
I don't know about missed calls, but at the threat of having this post become desaparecido, I need to chime in in tune with akronzips71. Not that the officials were biased -- they really were atrocious at both ends of the court. No consistency at all -- allowing hard play at times, then calling bare or not-at-all contact fouls. BUT -- I also watched about a half dozen other mid-to-low major games (like the 5:30 am HST NEC championship matchup between Vermont and Albany, and the last Saturday night game, the Big West showdown between Pacific vs UC-Irvine) -- and the officiating was at least as bad, if not worse than the MACC. There is just a huge canyon of ability between the high major conference officiating and the rest of the NCAA. Not sure what can be done about that, but that's the reality of college basketball officiating today. And I'm not even mentioning Jim Foote! Dave in Green
No consistency from the officials is pretty much what we were saying throughout the game. Some really hard shoves and holds -- like OU players with their arms draped over Zeke's shoulders so he couldn't jump -- were ignored. On the other hand, very light touches and incidental contact resulted in quick whistles. In at least a few cases, whistles were blown in anticipation of fouls that weren't there -- literally no physical contact as confirmed by video replay at home after the game. With the understanding that refs aren't perfect and can't get all the calls right, some do it better than others. If it's fair to talk about the quality of game play, it's fair to mention the quality of officiating. HS Stripes adds a good element of expertise to our officiating discussions. What I didn't mention was that the Maybelline Crew was calling the MACC. It seemed like (late in the game, at least) as many calls were make-up calls for what they knew were the wrong original calls. This is just one example, but right after Tree's tech, the very next call was a dermatological violation against OU on the next play. In fact, it seemed that many of these occured during the final ten minutes when Akron started to pull away. Not to say that the officials helped Akron any, but they sure didn't help Ohio any either -- maybe that's proof of their unbiased incompetence. Personally, I would rather refs not try to make up for a bad call -- but it's just too common, and just digs them a deeper hole.
akronzips71
Watching OU in the NIT against Denver. DJ is invisible again. He is playing worse than he did against us, if that is at all possible.
MontrealExposloveZippy
Dang!! And how about Bobert Morris!!!
Dave in Green
To expand a bit on Kentucky, they were a #1 seed in the NIT and lost to #8 seed Robert Morris, 59-57. The NCAA selection committee is feeling really righteous right about now. And in fairness to Cooper, while he isn't setting the world on fire tonight, he is the leading scorer in a balanced OU attack with 7 points, and the Kitties lead Denver at halftime, 32-30. Big Zip
I was torn on the Denver/OU game. I didn't even know Denver played Div. 1 basketball. I don't care for the OU fans they are probably as annoying as any fans in the MAC but I really wanted them to win in support of the MAC. taxpayer
MAC Champs! I've waited several days to let those words sink in after experiencing some real down days after hearing about AA, attending Senior night and watching KS hang on against the Zips then heading up to Cleveland for the KS rematch. What a roller coaster ride that was. I'm still not sure how the seniors and quite frankly, the team & coaches recovered from the shock of AA's actions. KD has consistently said how tough these young men are but until recent events, I didn't realize how mentally strong they all are! Impressive is, I believe, an understatement. Down by 7 or 9 in the first half against OU, down 3 at the half seemed like a lead. Then the complete defensive shut down of OU in the second half resulting in a MAC Championship is something Zips Nation should relish and never forget. From despair to EXHILARATION in 10 days. Congratulations to the Team & Coach KD & Staff! That was way beyond playing and coaching! Enjoy the Dance! Go Zips!
