Zeke and the NBA Draft

Recommended Posts

Please no Miami...

Well if he gets drafted it won't be Miami - right now they have no picks. But let's say somehow he does wind up there.... every time he enters a game the announcers will talk about his connections to LeBron via Akron and Dambrot. For the program, that would be awesome.

And they're the two-time defending champs, so for Zeke it would be awesome.

Granted, it's the last place I want to see him go (ok, I'd rather him a 'Heat' than a 'Pelican'), but it would be a great fit.

Nice to hear that the Cavs aren't going to completely ignore Zeke.

... but he has been inconsistent in his private workouts and left a few team scouts disappointed.

Maybe some of the workouts played more to his strengths and some to his weaknesses. Maybe some team scouts had different expectations. Lots of possible inconsistencies that may not be Zeke's fault. Anyway, all it takes is one team that likes what they see.

Or PERHAPS just PERHAPS his inconsistency came from him being physically and mentally EXHAUSTED after doing back to back to back workouts with NO REST except his plane ride. Hey....what a CRAZY, BIZARRE and DELUSIONAL thought that only his "mother" could think of! CRAZY ME!!!

GameChngr44, you are NOT alone in your thoughts that multiple workouts scheduled so close together between

multiple airplane flights is extremely demanding. Zeke will be just fine. Personally, I want to see Zeke in a Celtics uniform.

Lighten up Francis.

We are ALL Zeke fans here.

Spoelstra. He's too busy making sure the big 3 are happy and getting along.

Why would a young player go there?

Maybe to win multiple NBA Championships?

How many Cavs 2nd year players would trade places with Norris Cole?

Nah...hope Zeke gets drafted by the Cavs, Bucks or Hawks. It's all about building character once you get to the NBA.

The heat is the worst place for a young player to develop.

The NBA isn't a developmental league. It's a big boys league. Guys can either play or they can't. If the can't, they find another place to work.

No doubt, he has to be exhausting. So what? It's no longer college basketball and the expectations/financial outlays are enormous for teams. Everything is being watched. Everyone is flying around the country working out and teams are watching the players response to this challenge.

NBA teams play back to back games frequently. Being tired isn't something a player can fall back on. Consistency is part of the "professionalism" of professional sports. Zeke is going to be expected to do the same thing over and over again regardless of his level of fatigue. If he doesn't have the stamina to do the same thing over and over again, they will find someone who will. It's hard, but so is anything worth doing.

The great thing about what Zeke is going through is he gets to see first hand, at a very young age, what extreme pressure is like in the working world. Most kids out of college rarely are exposed to the challenge in front of him right now. Opportunity presents itself in strange ways sometimes. If Zeke doesn't make the NBA, the lessons he is learning right now on professionalism will go a long way for him.

You are thinking of winning rings (which is fine) but I am talking about having a long successful career in the league.

I would prefer to be on a team where I play and improve my game and get another contract (after the rookie contract expires) over winning a ring and being out of the league in 2 years.

By a rough quick statistical survey I ran earlier, around 60% of the 2nd round picks do not have a job in the league 4 years after they get drafted.

Norris Cole is a first round pick, different talent level with a much nicer contract situation.

Do you know what happened to the rookie center who is on the miami roster this year? he played 40 minutes the whole season. He will probably be waived soon (maybe next year)

What do you think about the growth and progress of their other center? Joel Anthony?

I simply hope Zeke doesn't get stuck in that situation... ring or no ring.

I am sorry I have to disagree with you GP1.

It is absolutely ridiculous to think that players do not develop and get better in the NBA. So you think the Danny Green that was waived by the Cavs, Spurs (twice) a couple of years ago broke Larry Bird's 3point record last week without getting better?

Many players seem to be heading out of the back door of the league, they get traded, get some good coaching, playing time, and boom: ca$hing big time in the next free agency.

This year examples with the Cavs: Shawn Livingston, Wayne Ellington, and Mo Speights.

Yeah, NBA players aren't expected to play back-to-back games on the road.

I would expect that NBA teams would put every workout player under an electron microscope. Each team knows when and where each visiting workout player has been and where he's going. They understand that it sorta kinda simulates an extended NBA road trip. They're looking for clues as to how far along each college player is. I'm pretty confident that Zeke was thoroughly briefed on all of this during his stay at the Coach John Lucas Camp in Houston. If for any reason Zeke was not thoroughly briefed on this, then Coach Lucas owes Zeke at least a partial refund.

SI's Andy Glockner redeems himself by including Zeke in his list of top 10 small-school prospects in the NBA draft:

Zeke Marshall, Akron

Who doesn’t need rim protection? Marshall is a legit 7-footer with a 7-foot-5 wingspan who blocked shots in the MAC at an extremely high rate. He’s improved a little on the offensive end and as a rebounder, but he remains principally a shot-swatter. Given a few years in the league to learn, develop and add some more weight, maybe he can be more than that, but gambling on raw size and ability to block shots is never a terrible idea in round two.

Nice to hear Coach Dambrot single out the San Antonio Spurs as a desirable place for Zeke to land. The Spurs have one of the best all-around organizations and a great coach in Greg Popovich. Coach Dambrot also mentioned the opportunity for Zeke to learn under Tim Duncan. Not only does Duncan have perhaps the best fundamentals of any center currently in the NBA, he also has the kind of class and professionalism that could really help influence Zeke's development. I wish Zeke had been given a chance to have a workout with the Spurs. Hopefully they had a chance to slide over to Houston while Zeke was training at the Coach John Lucas Camp.

List updated to include the Cavs. That's 13 of 30 NBA teams. Have I missed any? Any other possibilities before the draft Thursday?

Dallas Mavericks May 31

Detroit Pistons June 3

Houston Rockets June 5

Phoenix Suns June 6

Sacramento Kings June 10

Minnesota Timberwolves June 12

Portland Trail Blazers June 14

Los Angeles Lakers June 17

Chicago Bulls June 18

Charlotte Bobcats June 19

Philadelphia 76ers June 21

Indiana Pacers June 22

Cleveland Cavaliers June 24

Sporting News features Zeke in the lead of a story on mid-major player poaching:

It was late February, toward the end of his final season in NCAA basketball, and Zeke Marshall stood far from the spotlight. Here he was, a star center on a team with an 18-game winning streak and hardly anyone knew his name, but he expressed no desire on that day to change anything about where he’d chosen to spend his college career.

Lots of more prominent basketball programs than Akron had recruited Marshall. Great student, athletic 7-footer—who wouldn’t want that guy? But he wanted Akron, in part because he was attracted to its challenging computer information program.

“I don’t regret choosing this school at all,” Marshall told Sporting News. “I have a lot of good, positive memories here. I have no regrets. I think it was a great decision.” ...

... Most players at mid-major programs finish their careers where they began, and that is particularly true when they are part of stable programs. Marshall’s four years at Akron turned out well because Akron made it so. The coach who recruited him, Keith Dambrot, ran the Zips all four years. The staff built a successful team around Marshall.

Marshall finished his career in the NCAA Tournament, completing a fourth season with the program that had recruited him (and beat out all those big-timers) five years earlier. That’s far more common. It’s not even close.

I wish Zeke had been given a chance to have a workout with the Spurs.

The Spurs wanted Zeke to workout with them on Friday but he was scheduled to go to Philly..There are 3 day until the draft and they are still talking...stay tuned...
