Zipgrad01
Keener said: Coach Bowden is addressing lack of depth. He said so last night. The Zips are woefully thin at some positions and the staff is desperately trying to bolster the lineup with some guys that have played at the D-1 level. That is called smart. Much better to try and address your weaknesses with this approach than to cross your fingers and hope that we don't lose key players to injury. If the holes aren't filled, the Zips are in huge trouble. How can you survive if you lose Kyle Pohl? Pughsley? Grice? Presley? Caponi? You can't. Coach Bowden is smart. The only "blue-chipper" that may put an existing player's playing time in jeopardy is C.J. Mizell. Whether or not C.J. even makes it to campus has yet to be seen, never mind how he will fit in and perform. Jamel Turner was a blue chip guy coming out of H.S. and he hasn't stolen much playing time from anyone to date. Does anyone have an date when we will find out about Mizell's status? I understand you are primarily a basketball fan, but your little dig at our defensive line really pisses me off and a true Zips fan wouldn't go there. Am I missing any? Next season we'll have: DL Se'Von Pittman (Ohio State) DL Cory James (Colorado State) Have they been shuffling the players a bit? Isn't C.J. James a DE and isn't Moses McCray a DT? ZachTheZip
An alternative possibility for the transfer from Pitt. We recruited him out of junior college. Might be able to play immediately, as a grad student.

ZachTheZip
Zips assistant Athletic Director was on with Joe Dunn today, and he said that we can expect about six 5th year transfers to come in. Still couldn't say names, but mentioned Pitt and Wisconsin. What wasn't clear is if that was in addition to the Moses McCray, or including him. McCray is the only one that's currently on the roster. If it includes McCray, then we know all the names. If it doesn't, then there's one more transfer out there that we don't know about yet. If I understand the situation correctly, he hasn't played since 2011. I assume that would mke him eligible right away for the Zips? Do you have confimation of this? Surely you must have confirmation, otherwise you wouldn't have told the JMU message boards that he is I'll say this. If Capi plays for the Zips in 2013, we will have the best UA defense since the 2005 MAC championship team, by far.

The pic of him in the Zips locker room, wearing a Zips helmet, is enough for me to believe he's on the team. Since he didn't play last season, he's eligible this season (I think I recall Bowden saying Capi would be eligible for 2013 when he spoke to us at the Golf Outing). If I were in Vegas I'd drop 50 bucks on the Zips to win the MAC this year. It's the MAC...and the Zips are a completely new, seemingly much more talented team in 2013. That's good enough for me to try 75:1.

Just looking at the numbers, we lost 4 key players on the two deep and we pick up 5. Plus, the returning players have a year with Amato under their belt, which will HOPEFULLY stop coverage foul ups where an opponent's receiver lines up and has no one guarding him like we saw last year. There are many questions like will the transfers pan out, but I'm focusing on Rossi and Presley. Can Rossi take over that MIKE spot and will Presley get out of the dog house because of a poor off season and take over as one of the starting DE's. But after watching numerous practices in the spring, I think it will be very difficult for him to get ahead of John Rachal at the inside spot. And that doesn’t even consider whether CJ Mizell might play inside as well. I think we’ll see a lot of subbing throughout the defense this year, so it’s good to have talented options. CK, I didn’t realize TB had mentioned Capi by name at the outing. Perhaps I missed it. Regardless, it would seem almost certain that he’d be eligible in 2013. Let’s hope he and the rest of the newcomers can focus on football and avoid the past missteps off the field. The way I see it, that (or a crazy rash of injuries) is the only thing that will prevent a huge defensive turnaround in 2013.

Another reason I'm optomistic is because of the 4 key players lost on defense, only one was a lineman, while the 5 coming in to help on defense include 4 lineman. We now have a solid two deep rotation up front.
