History Lesson

Here's my history lesson, particularly in the short Bowden era so far.

We got CRUSHED by CFU last year also, at home, and followed that up with a good performance at Tennessee, demolished a 1-AA school, and almost beat Miami and FIU in the month of September. If we can duplicate that history over the next month or so, I'll stick with these guys. And it will be a tremendous bonus if we could take a couple of those almost-wins from that same period of time last year, and turn them into wins this year.

I didn't see the "wheels coming off" last year until we hit that stretch where we scored 10 pts. against BGSU (Zero in the 2nd half), and got beat badly by Northern and Central. Until that happens, I'm going to hang in there and hope that at least some of last season's history following the CFU game repeats itself.

Can we please end the myth that we played well against Tennessee? They outgained us by 300 yards and won by 3 touchdowns. Why is everyone so happy with that game?

I'm sure "happy" is not correct, encouraged maybe. One of the worst teams in Div I coming with three TDs of an SEC team, and you don't get it? Did you watch the UMass game last year?

Unfortunately I was at the UMass game. Three hours I'm never getting back.

Tennessee was not good last year. The only SEC team they beat was Kentucky. We hung around for a half because of key turnovers, but overall we got rolled.

The game was tied at 23 at halftime. The score was 23-30 at the end of the 3rd quarter. One touchdown away with one quarter to go, on the road in an SEC stadium. We ran out of gas, but we were in as good a position as any Zip fan could possibly hope for, for three quarters.

Look at where we have been the past four years, and compare that to where we were for the majority of that game. That's why people are happy with that game.

Even at the half they basically had double the yardage. I look forward to a future where it doesn't take a ton of luck to hang with teams.

Yardage means nothing, only points. I look forward to a future where where we win games and fans still crap on the team because they were outgained or didn't have as many sacks or something else equally stupid.

Yardage means nothing? Maybe you'll understand football in a few years.

If you are only going to count points though, they had 21 more than us. Also not great.

Maybe you'll understand that yardage means little and less if you ever grow out of having the attitude of a perpetual loser.

As for points, they scored 17 of 21 more than we had them in the 4th quarter. For three quarters we played even with an SEC team on the road. Why can't you get it through your head that that's something to be celebrated for a team as far down in the dumps as Akron?

You're happy about beatdown from a team that wasn't bowl eligible? And I'm the one with a loser mentality?

Allowing 600 yards of offense means the other team did whatever they wanted to do. I'm done with moral victories anyway.

You must of missed last years super bowl Zach. Even though Baltimore scored more points than the 49'ers, the 49'ers outgained them by more than 100 yards, and that's how the 49'ers ended up getting the LOZ trophy.

Wow, that hurts.

I guess the rally cry of "we almost hung with a non-bowl-eligible team through three quarters" just isn't doing it for me. And again, I don't care what the half-time score was, that game was an ass-whipping.

From a guy who was at that game: It was FAR from an ass-whipping. Ass-whipping is what UCF did to us this year. Completely controlling the game, never allowing the opponent to gain an advantage. Tennessee game we were in the lead for a good portion of the game. And as a graduating senior, there has been no game more exciting in my Collegiate career than being in the stands of Neyland Stadium watching Akron hang-in against the University of Tennessee.

Is anybody watching the UCF@FIU game on CBS Sports? It's the beginning of the 4th quarter. Akron is better than FIU. UCF is just really good, and FIU is bad. If you watch this game, you'll feel better about where the Zips stand, though. We are not the worst team in the country, and there are teams on our schedule as bad or worse than FIU.

38-0. Held FIU to 29 yards rushing on 29 attempts. Ouch.
