GJGood
Could it be that the Zips just perform better when playing top 25 teams on the road?
zestycoyote
Lynch isn't hitting his throws today. If UA can contain him on the ground, something they haven't ever done, there's a chance the Zips make this a nail-biter. At least I still want to watch the second half! Zipgrad1990
Could it be that the Zips just perform better when playing top 25 teams on the road? I agree, but although playing better is nice I want to see another top 25 win. Or actually any win and especially one on the road.
LZIp
some of this play calling is downright putrid. At least two runs on 3rd and long. Still, pleased with how we are competing. Receivers need to catch better and the team needs to quit shooting themselves in the foot with penalties. Would prefer a little less conservative playcalling. Am pleased with them attempted to get #1 involved.
akzipper
3rd and 34 what kind of play does Pat Shurmur have for that? Nevermind now it's 3rd and 42. I believe there was 7 penalties on the Zips on one set of downs...
akzipper
I don't understand how Pohl is still our quarterback.
Balsy
A blocked fieldgoal...with a penalty for illegal chop block? As an Akron Zips fan...I have officially seen everything.

akronzips71
Plenty of time. Good field position. This could happen. And that blocked PAT would bite them in the butt big time.

akronzips71
TERRIBLE 4th down call. Should have punted and gone for the stop. Very poor coaching.
MDZip
I don't understand how Pohl is still our quarterback. His accuracy was really off today seemed to overthrow and underthrow all day. On that 4th down pass where he went deep to L.T. Smith, it appeared there was a high percentage pass to a Zips receiver in the middle of the field past the first down marker. This was not a good game for him but I thought the defense was terrific.
akzipper
Hirschman is still hurt. Is he out for the whole season? We need someone who can get the ball into the endzone. Not going to win many games overthrowing receivers by 10 feet and throwing at their ankles.
LZIp
It was a great effort by the team..but thats all it is, effort. Someday we need to make the most of these opportunities and pull off a win. Pohl doesnt look right at all. Just doesnt step into his throws. I've heard he is delaying surgery until the end of the season.
GoZips88
Pohl is playing on a bad wheel and I really do think that is having an affect. A shame Hirschman hurt himself celebrating on the kind of play we sorely needed today. Nice to see the Zips bounce back with a nice defensive effort today against a high-powered offense like NIU's, especially with the amount of time they had to be on the field. Year 2 = losing close. We've played some very good teams this year, have had our share of injuries, and have been hanging in there. Very watchable as compared to a few years ago. As much as I hate it we just need to continue to be patient as our guys continue to get better and the coaching staff brings in a few more key pieces/play-makers. Seriously considering making the long drive to Oxford next Saturday in the hopes of witnessing our first win EVER in Oxford (0-9; avg score 14-40). Go Zips!!! I suppose that's improvement, but we've got to start pulling off that close game against a superior team.

I hate losing as much as anyone, but after the stinker last week I really wanted to see the Zips compete today and they certainly did not disappoint in that regard. NIU hasn't been contained like that all season, and UA did it with James at home and several key players playing at less than 100%. I am certain the Zips have not won a MAC game ever in Oxford, but I'm not entirely sure they've never won there period. Regardless, I am excited for the opportunity next week. Kudos to the players today, especially the defense. GREAT effort. Go Zips!!!

Well, there will never be a more likely opportunity to beat the Sweaterbirds than this season! They just allowed UMass's second victory in FBS. Gee, I wonder who the first was over? I almost expect Akron to be the favorite -- when were we last road faves?

A shame Hirschman hurt himself celebrating on the kind of play we sorely needed today.IMO Pohl doesn't help himself out. He abandons his pocket prematurely too many times. If he stands tall in the pocket and steps into his throws, he is accurate. Maybe he thinks he is trying to protect his injury. When he starts moving, he loses his effectiveness. Play calling to start the game was improved yesterday.

The GoZips box score verifies that he did not play, but I have not heard the reason. The defense's play Saturday is even more remarkable considering this.
