Dr Z
As mentioned here by DIG I thought this deserved it's own thread. USA Today FOX Sports Ohio University of Akron football head coach Terry Bowden has received a two-year contract extension, President Dr. Luis M. Proenza announced on Thursday. The extension, which is pending approval by the UA Board of Trustees, will keep Bowden at the helm of the program through the 2018 season. "I couldn't be more pleased with the progress we've made," Bowden said. "I'm proud of the dedication of the players and staff, who have never given up and are starting to see the rewards of their hard work. This contract extension is a product of their efforts and I appreciate the continued dedication the University has made to Zips Football. That dedication of resources was apparent when I interviewed for this position and helps with every aspect of our program."
skip-zip
I knew it would come, I just didn't expect it until sometime next year. Schools love to do this. It's a way to claim that "we have long term stability" when recruiting players.

More importantly, other coaches can't plant that seed of doubt.

Balsy
I've said it before and I'll say it again (despite many people probably thinking I'm crazy) Bowden will end his coaching career at Akron.

It's all about perception We never know what's going to happen, and coaches change their minds all the time. But on paper, right now, TB will be here for at least 5 more years. That's a great possibility and I hope it happens. I don't have a problem with the U giving him the extension this early because it is clear he is turning the program around. There is one school I would be afraid of TB leaving for...and that is WVU. Like I said, its deserved, but you have to wonder if the extension was given so early to entice him to stay, especially since WVU will be looking for a new coach very soon. Zipgrad01
I have told multiple people this and most think that I am crazy, but I believe that Bowden will stay here. He doesnt need the money. He cant catch his dad in victories. He can, however, do something that would cement his legacy as a coaching great.....he could turn one of the worst programs in the country into a nationally relevant program. Every single time I hear coach talk, and read about what he has to say I get the implication and the feeling (though I understand feelings are irrelevant), that this is it for him. If he can't get it to work here than he's done. If he can get it to work here, he's done and will continue to ride that success. For our sake, I hope (and subsequently believe of course) that Akron is the last bastion for the Bowden boys.

I hope he can keep his staff together for a few more years too. Tank, Woodford, Buckley, Amato...all those guys have done an awesome job over the past 2 seasons. You saw in year #1 that we can move the ball and score if we've got the right people in the system. We regressed offensively in year #2. QB, RB and WR need to pick it up next season. We need some horses. Then we'll be pretty dangerous.

Tank, Woodford, Buckley, Amato...all those guys have done an awesome job over the past 2 seasons. Great point CK. If you look at the history of Akron football, there are two cases in which the original staff of the coach leaves on some level and with them goes a lot of success. Faust had a great staff when he started, Woodford was one of them, and he was unable to replace them effectively when they moved on to bigger places. At the end, Faust had a bunch of knuckleheads coaching for him. JD had basically his original staff when we won the championship and shortly after that many were gone along with the success of the championship. For whatever reason, it seems like a hard thing to replace the original staff.
Buckzip
The lines, especially DT are very thin. Pun intended. We need some more 5th year transfers or JUCO that can come in and help immediately.

I have high hopes for Pittman, but I gotta say NC58 is going to leave a gaping hole. I hope Se'Von can fill it if he is moving inside.
