One thing's for sure -- the more tOSU defenders push back on tOSU doubters, the more delight the doubters will take when tOSU is exposed. I really like the FSU-Auburn matchup. FSU has been consistent all season while dominating a schedule ranked as weak or weaker than tOSU's, while Auburn has been improving week-by-week since their only loss of the season while playing a tougher schedule. Both teams appear to be peaking when it counts, and we can only hope that they both have their best games of the season in producing a memorable national championship game. I'd love to see FSU end SEC dominance, but Auburn has been playing like a team of destiny in recent weeks. I can't wait to see this game.

Even though neither team has a strong schedule, you touched on one HUGE difference between Florida State and OSWho, which is that they dominated all of their opponents. But secondly, don't forget that they posted wins against a #3 and #7 ranked team along the way, with the win against the #3 team on the road. Meanwhile, OSWho hasn't even PLAYED a team ranked in the Top-10 in the last two years, until yesterday. And that opponent was just barely at that point.

I agree with you that Auburn is the more tested team because of their schedule. But, I like the chances of matching Florida State's defense against the Gus Malzahn offensive system.

@skip-zip, FSU's win over Clemson was a good one. The win over Miami turned out to be not as good after Miami also lost to Virginia Tech and Duke (48-30!). But FSU didn't have any letdowns along the way, as they dominated every one of their opponents. I don't see FSU dominating Auburn or vice versa. I see a close game between two really strong teams.

Zips-flavored game?

medium_bowden.jpg449788.jpg

Somewhat! Here is an article that discusses some of that, with no specific mention of Akron. I've mentioned this on the board before, but Jimbo Fisher was the QB for the Salem team that opened up the Faust era at the Rubber Bowl in 1986. In fact, he got hurt and had to be taken out early. Up to that point, he was moving the ball against the Zips. It's funny how TB was RB coach for the Zips during 1986 after having been HC at that very same Salem the three years prior.

Yep, tOSU doubters get another year to kick them around after they lose to a lower-ranked ACC team. Meanwhile Mizzou proves itself by taking down Okie State.

Beyond just showing that they were nowhere near as good as their over-bloated ranking (which had basically been there since the pre-season), one could also continue to make the argument that you just flat-out are not prepared to play a decent team when you've been playing cupcakes for 3 months. Even putting coaches into a pressure cooker situation that they have not faced all year makes critical play calling and time management an untested entity.

I'm all in favor of what's been suggested here, which is that teams don't get a ranking until half way through the season. If that had happened this year, the OSWho-loving media would obviously not have put them at the #2 spot. Although, some writers did allow the light bulb to turn on at some point by allowing 4 teams to leapfrog them.

We'll see how this shakes out in August.

Mizzou had an unbelievable year. If a few plays go another way against Auburn, they'd be playing for the title. But, I think you'll still find them in the #2 spot in the final polls. I'm sure that will boost their program incredibly.

Isn't tosu always "a year away"?

Remember when the talk was of Missouri joining the Big Ten. Good thing for tosu and the other old guard in the Big Ten they didn't or the Big Ten would have actually added a good football team to their mix.

How can all those 4 and 5 star recruits on defense from Columbus play so bad as a team? I'll take the Zip's staff, and recruits over those prima donnas. Sammy Watkins game is going to fit very nicely in the NFL, if he stays out of trouble. If I'm Banner, I give him a long interview. Entertaining game to watch.

Instead, they add Maryland and Rutgers....LOL

Actually, Missouri likely wouldn't have gotten nearly the help they got by joining the SEC. Just look at Nebraska, which has pretty much slipped into obscurity since joining the Little 10. And I actually thought Nebraska would help the Little 10's plummeting stature.

I think the ACC has passed the Big Ten this year, only getting worse with Maryland and Rutgers coming in, and Louisville to the ACC. Remember when people thought the TV revenue from Maryland and Rutgers would be a big help to them? Does anyone even care about that anymore? It would be hard to get excited as a Big Ten fan over the new additions at this point.

I thought the exact same thing while watching the game. I'm not sure where they are, but they aren't on the field. My guess is all of the recruiting sites people obsess over don't actually know what they heck they are talking about. I've always thought that.

tosu has a glaring talent problem. The defensive coordinator is going to take the fall, but they have too many guys who aren't good enough to compete against the highest level of college football, or a high level ACC school for that matter. The talent problem they have isn't going to be resolved by another one of their "top five" recruiting classes.

However, as unworthy as they are for serious consideration, guess who will be in the Top 5 preseason polls next year? It's lazy journalists and coaches who vote in the polls that put them there. tosu should never be rated higher than 10th going into any season and moving forward should have to go undefeated through the Big Ten championship to be considered to play in the 4 team playoff moving forward.

Nobody cared about it then other than Big Ten ADs who promoted it like it actually means something. Big Ten fans are so desperate for any relevance, they will grasp at any straw. If throwing $100 bills at teams would win games, the Big Ten would have an advantage. If using talent to beat another team wins, the Big Ten has a problem.

I understand all the distaste for osu. But come on guys, you all sound like a bunch of whiny little girls with little brother syndrome. The fact is, and as much as you dont wanna hear it, osu IS a good team. They are far more talented than we, as a whole, are. Their 4 and 5 star recruits are just that. Its just that Clemson, which is a very good team regardless of conference, had the better team. Seriously now, can we please stop bashing on other teams, other than Can't and sometimes OU and UM, and worry about our own team.

Not a chance! So long as I have to listen to friends, family, and the media drivel on about OSU's unsubstantiated greatness, I will continue to point out how and why they are over-rated. Many of these friends and family are UA alums with no connection to OSU, which compounds my frustration. I have said time and again on this forum that I can tolerate the lunatic OSU alums; the casual OSU fans with no connection to the university and especially UA alums are the ones that drive me insane.

OSU should be better than us. They are the flagship university of Ohio, so they have all the resources and tradition. This explains the little sibling complex you mention. We are both D-1A/FBS and often have cross-conference games, so I will continue to give their programs a reality check. With the results of these past two games, my criticism of OSU has proven to be fairly objective. I think they are a top 15-20 team, but playing for the NC because they won 24 straight games with soft OOC and B10 schedules...ridiculous!

They are a good team that is completely overrated. Pointing this out is not bashing. It is pointing out the truth. They have become what Va Tech used to be. America is sick of looking at them lose one big game after another and wishes they and their obnoxious fans would go away.

+1. I will always bash OSU so long as they are given 98% of the media coverage, when there are 7 other Division I programs in the state. I understand they are "more popular", but the popularity IMO has been bread into Ohioans within the state because of the constant Media drivel.

This is an outstanding post. It doesn't get talked about enough. THIS is the reason why they have an unfair advantage at the beginning of the season. It's unsubstantiated, and should never happen.
