Dave in Green
@pdt1420 is the one who referred to the numbers as "bodies." I was only pointing out that the numbers don't actually represent bodies, which are also referred to as butts in seats. I didn't say the paid attendance was bad, just that it's not the same as bodies. Nothing negative intended. The Zips paid attendance was pretty good, especially considering the win-loss record from the previous three seasons.
zippy5
Care to name any kind of paid event where they don't go by tickets sold as the number for attendance? There aren't any, and that's not just in sports. So why make "butts in seats" an issue? The NFL. I know for a fact that at least Heinz field does "butts in seats." Dr Z
The NFL. I know for a fact that at least Heinz field does "butts in seats."Correct. The Pittsburgh sports media is very interested in how many people are actually at an event (Steelers/Pens/Bucks). The media also does a great job following tv ratings for sporting events, and where Pittsburgh, and other cities, rate in the market. I remember reading that Pittsburgh was the city with the highest TV rating for the Winter Classic. That surprised me a little. Attendance example Another note: Rooney is discussing lowering preseason ticket prices, and raising premier games (Ravens). Like they do in college football already. I would guess this catches on throughout the $nfl$.
zippy5
Cue the bandwagon fan posts in 3, 2, 1... But yes, I'm sure Pittsburgh isn't the only town to record actual attendance. Side note, it really is crazy how it's turned into a hockey town, not just a Pens town.
K92
I listen to SXM channel 91 a lot. The breakaway of the power 5 conferences has been a hot topic of conversation for a while now, but today I heard some words coming from Rick Neuheisel that makes me believe he may be GP1.He advocates a separate division for the power 5 conferences: "Division IV". Division IV institutions should not play any teams outside the division. When asked "What happens to the other 60-odd schools in FBS" that would be left in limbo, he suggested they move to the spring. He contends there would be demand for the product a la the USFL and it would be better for conferences like the MAC to play in the spring so that they would no longer be forced to play "those awful Tuesday night games".I heard it with my own two ears. Balsy
I agree...what a horrible idea. Spring FB will never work...especially on a college system. The vast majority of the Spring will be cold not-good weather for football. You'll be competing with the Superbowl and then baseball for "sub-par" football. Not to mention the "Big Five" will eventually be begging to have access to the "sub-par" teams again to get wins.
K92
Rick does have a little first hand experience with springtime football. Just sayin.
GP1
I agree...what a horrible idea. I agree. However, allow me to present an opposite argument. Spring FB will never work...especially on a college system. It would be the most appealing form of sports entertainment for most Americans so people would follow it. The vast majority of the Spring will be cold not-good weather for football. If they started the games the week after the Final Four, most places would be starting to warm. I'd go so far as to say the amount of bad weather games played in the spring would not equal those being played in the fall. You'll be competing with the Superbowl and then baseball for "sub-par" football. Poll College football is just about as popular as MLB. Combine college football and NFL, and 46% of American claim football to be their most favorite sport. A spring college football league would probably out rate MLB. A college football league would do very well in ratings and with money. How much does MLB make in television rights and what if MAClike conferences could rake in equal to that amount of money? There are too many sports networks and not enough good programming so that is why these networks are throwing money at tedious and unpopular sports like soccer in the spring. Give them something popular and they would throw even more money at a college football league. Not to mention the "Big Five" will eventually be begging to have access to the "sub-par" teams again to get wins. Screw them. Once the money starts to come in, MAClike conferences will wonder why they bothered with the big five for so long.Again, I'm just one man presenting the opposite argument against evidence that it would be popular...or at least the risk for MAClike conferences. They have nothing to lose.
