Wow, no politically-based conspiracy and the Zips hit their free throws :D

Great job, Zips! Just like KD said in the Beacon today, this team's chemistry is coming together. Lots of contributions tonight. Pat, Deji, Nyles and Reggie all provided key sparks to supplement the usual terrific play of Tree. Quincy is showing he can be the closer from the line. Looking forward to the Cyclones tomorrow.

Go Zips!!!!

18 hour turnaround and then we get our first (and probably only) shot this year at a top-25 team. It would be an awesome time for KD to get off the shnod against the top-25 programs. Cyclones are a MUCH better team than this OSU group was tonight. Going to take a huge effort. Go Zips!

Iowa State is pretty small, so this will be a very interesting matchup.

Congrats to the staff and team on a marquee OOC win!

The Zips were the better team. We actually looked 12 points better than Oregon State. And the funny thing is...we were far from playing our best game.

McAdams, Kretzer and Harney were off for a great portion of the night, but Evans, Tree, Ibitayo(!?) and Forsythe (?!) were a force. And we got the ball to our 81% FT shooter when we needed to. No problems with the press(?!)

I was very concerned when Ibitayo entered the game with 1 minute remaining. But we never threw him the ball, so his FT shooting didn't come into play.

Who'da thunk I'd be hoping Tree would go to the FT line? His FT shooting has really improved. Thank God, because refs in 2014-14 are burning through several whistles per game. The whistle companies have to be making record profits this year?

Iowa State is crazy athletic. Looking forward to seeing how we match up against them. And if our guys that had off nights tonight can get back on track tomorrow.

I had the chance to go to a coaching clinic at Cuyahoga Heights a year ago, and it was a great experience. I had the chance to soak in lectures from Bob Knight, Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart, Matt Painter, Steve Prohm, Greg Kampe, Archie Miller, Ganon Baker, Tara Vanderveer, and Fred Hoiberg.

Each had their own "agenda" on what they were going to use in their segment of the coaches' clinic. Hoiberg was showing a lot of their offensive sets and transition sets(yes, transition sets). I really wish I could find those sheets, and get them to Hawaii as soon as possible :ninja: .

Hoiberg likes to have a tall, big, athletic player bringing the ball up for mismatched opportunities. I do remember that. Should be an interesting game. Will have to play better, but at least we finally got that win. Felt we let one get away against OK State, but finally a marquee win over the Beavers. Can't wait for tomorrow's matchups.

Headline on Oregon State's Official web site . . .

Akron Edges Oregon State

"edges" you just have to love the political correctness of the Left Coast

... and the spin doctors at OSU continued with this ...

"On Monday, Oregon State will face George Mason in the semifinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at 11:30 a.m. PT (9:30 a.m. HST) in a game televised nationally on ESPNU."

I'm SURE they meant to say "... in the semifinals OF THE LOSER'S BRACKET ... ."

I have to admit, I am impressed with Deji.

He has turned into a pretty solid player.

Deji and Pat F. are figuring out what their roles are on this team. Every team has featured players and role players. Tree and Q are featured players. Harney can be, when he wants to. Nyles is slowly nudging his way into that conversation. Those are the guys you are looking at to get you big scoring numbers, to shut down the other teams best man and to generally carry your team. McAdams and Kretzer are role players. They know what their roles are and the usually play them quite well. They have to come in and hit 3's, play solid defense, don't turn the ball over and score just enough to keep your featured players clean of the double teams.

Deji is slowly starting to figure out that his role is also to hit some 3's, but he gives you an added dimension in that he has the physical tools to not only be a solid defender, but a lock down defender. He isn't there yet, but you're starting to see his confidence grow.

Pat F. has figured out that we don't need him to be Zeke. The funny thing is that the more he figures that out the more he starts to play a little like Zeke. He's blocking shots from the week side, playing good defense and hitting his open looks when he has them. Probably the most important thing is that he's cut the silly travel calls WAY down the last few games.

We don't need either of these guys to be 15 PPG players. As long as they keep giving us what they are giving us now we will be in really good shape.

It does appear that the 3-guard rotation is Nyles, Q and Deji, as they accounted for all 80 game minutes at guard. Nyles is starting to remind me of Darryl Roberts, but with a higher ceiling. Deji's ceiling is still a mystery. Hopefully he's on the verge of pulling a Jimmy Conyers.

Even though some of it was dictated by foul problems, the minutes played tonight is an interesting stat to consider:

Treadwell, 34

Evans, 32

Diggs, 31

Kretzer, 25

Forsythe, 23

McAdams, 17

Ibitayo, 16

Harney, 12

Cheatham, 8

Johnson, 2

Cheatham is the secret weapon. If Pat AND Big Dog get into foul trouble we still have another guy who plays big and IS BIG.

Absolutely....and the emergence of Ibitayo is the only reason that can happen.

No. It's being able to play Evans for 32 minutes.

I think you're going to still see plenty of Betancourt this year, but I expect that his minutes will work back in very slowly. Deji does nothing to help us in the ball handling dept. But, he is helping us. He's actually playing very "big" for his size.

Ibitayo gives you the added depth at the guard position. Without it Betancourt is getting minutes.

It's Nyles, Deji and Q all showing they're able to productively contribute longer minutes. That moves Melo to the bench and Reggie from the 2 to the 3.

Reggie has been starting at the 3 at least the past 3 games, right?

Didn't get to watch the game, but listened on 1350. Sounds like the Zips played their best game of the year so far. Also noticed this: Evans started and we got off to a hot start. Completely satisfied with the rotation tonight, even with the foul trouble. Let's beat ISU!

While I appreciate Q, Nyle, Reggie and all our 3 point shooters, this game was won in the paint.

Midmajors usually use the little brother approach of shooting as many 3s as possible (even when contested) to make up for the lack of size, speed, and athleticism when they play power conference opponents. Not those Zips. I think with Tree and (travel free) Pat, this team can play anyone in the country and take it to them in the paint.

Tree is not a surprise anymore, we all know his potential. If he develops a consistent mid range jumper he may be in the NBA in 2 years.

Did Pat have his coming out game? the footwork inside was great, the soft hands and MOST IMPORTANTLY the defense.

Finally, I know many of you will not think it was a big deal, but I loved the play when Reggie went after a rebound and put the ball back in the basket. I always felt that he is too good to just stand around the arc and wait for a shot opportunity. I am glad to see him hit the paint and be physical. He has all the tools.

Very short turn around time. Harney & Big Dog were well rested today. They should contribute big time tomorrow. Not that the others shouldn't.

Good night to be a zip...let's make them 2 tomorrow!
