Balsy
Final : S. Carolina 78 St Mary's 71 I can't quite tell if this is good or bad...if we lost against Iowa good chance we're up against SMU...which I'm not a fan of...if we win, well then we don't have to play SMU again but that means SMU's value is dropping... Or we could just not worry about it, as long as the Zips take care of business today! GO ZIPS!
Dave in Green
I watched the first half of this game. South Carolina plays an extremely aggressive game. They're loaded with athletes who make up for any lack of skills with high energy, speed and hops. They may have started the season slowly. But their performance against Saint Mary's shows that they will be a tough challenge for the Zips.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this thing set up so that the loser of our game this afternoon will face the loser of the other semifinal game (South Carolina or Boise State) while the winners of those two games face each other? I don't think SMU's value is dropping. They lost one game on a neutral site to an SEC team. Hardly time for them to push the panic button. Then there is not a good chance we will play SMU because I don't believe we have ever lost to Iowa in basketball.
Dave in Green
@Quickzips, the full tournament schedule is here.
Quickzips
@Quickzips, the full tournament schedule is here. Unfortunately that doesn't really clarify what happens to the losers of the Zips/Cyclones and S.Carolina/Boise St. games today. The winners clearly meet in the championship. Do the losers go on to game 9 or game 11 or do they get mixed back in with Hawaii, George Mason, Oregon State and Saint Marys???
skip-zip
So, there's a chance now that we could play South Carolina twice in one week?
zippy5
So, there's a chance now that we could play South Carolina twice in one week? Yeah really hoping that doesn't happen. Go Boise
MDZip
Last year's tournament was also run by ESPN and they had a separation on the 1st round winners and losers brackets which would mean we cannot see SMC no matter what now. And for South Carolina, if you don't want to see them twice in a week, root for the opposite to happen to them as what happens for the Zips. Although frankly, seeing them in the Diamond Head championship and then again in a few days would be OK with me. I do not want to see them in the championship consolation and then again three days later.
Dave in Green
There are 8 teams in the tournament and there are 4 games each day of the tournament, including the final day, Wednesday, Dec. 25. So each team plays each day of the tournament. Obviously the winners of today's 2 semifinal games will be the only undefeated teams going into the final day of the tournament and will meet in the championship game Wednesday. My guess is that the losers in today's 2 semifinal games meet in Game 11 Wednesday, just ahead of the Championship Game 12. It also seems logical that the 2 teams with 2 losses going into Wednesday will meet in Game 9 and that the 2 first round losers who win in today's second round will meet Wednesday in Game 10. Actually you're right, sorry I looked at the bracket wrong There is no chance that we would face SMC again, you are correct. Phew at least that clears that up. Sorry, I should have drank my coffee before reading the bracket. I'm not saying push the panic button, I'm saying it looks better to have lost to an undefeated team. The loser of game 6 (Iowa/Akron) will face the loser of game 7 (S. Carolina/Boise St.) in game 11, which is for third place. So to wrap that up for everyone, with our in in round one, we have guaranteed ourselves at least 4th place. Now that the explanation is out of the way...lets go for first! GoZips
Were you all wondering whether the President took the time to do a meet and greet of the Zips? Sorry. No, the President did not bother meeting his constituents from Ohio. This from a source at the Classic.

zippy5
I guess this proves the NCAA's anti-akron soccer conspiracy is much deeper
