Big Zip
Sadly today would have been the day we found out if we got a new basketball arena.
Hilltopper
There is still hope. Don't give up on the idea of a new arena yet.
ziptrumpet87
Sadly with the change in the issue proposal, I've pretty much given up on the arena now.
Balsy
Zips will never get a new arena. So get used to #ThinkSmaller #NeverGoodEnough and #SmallTime
ZachTheZip
The issue lost 56.3% to 43.7%.Do you think with an arena attached it would have been different?
Zip_ME87
The issue lost 56.3% to 43.7%.Do you think with an arena attached it would have been different? Not with the moronic way they were promoting it.It's not just UA #ThinkSmaller. NEO doesn't seem to have visionaries.Akron and surrounding area are large enough to support an entertainment venue. I'm sure people in Akron and south of Akron would prefer to only have to go to Akron, rather than Cleveland, for concerts and other such entertainment that could be held at a downtown Akron Arena in addition to Zips Basketball. Also, the Zips could potentially draw Ohio State and other "power conference" D1 teams to Akron where those schools' NEO alumni could more easily go to see their alma mater play.Idiots in Cleveland had a perfect opportunity in 1996-98 to build a domed stadium/Ford Field type stadium for the Browns somewhere other than the waterfront. CLE could have hosted the NCAA Men's FInal Four and a SuperBowl plus many other events, and could have developed that lake front property for much better use. No, status quo stupidity prevailed, and an open air stadium that hosts 8 regular season and 2 pre-season NFL games per year and a few other events resulted. What a waste of half a billion + dollars...mistake on the lake 2.

Zip_ME87
If I remember correctly with the Dome idea, the only reason why Cleveland wanted a dome was because they was trying to get the Olympics. If that's true, proves my point. Little thought as to what they could have with an indoor football stadium. By now, they've put enough funds into the current wind tunnel (First Energy Stadium) on the lake that they could have had a very nice indoor facility. With the MAC HQ'd in Cleveland, could have possibly had the MACC FB game here in addition to the MAC Basketball Tourneys. Oh well, #Don'tThinkatAll
skip-zip
The issue lost 56.3% to 43.7%.Do you think with an arena attached it would have been different? That's the reason why they dropped the arena from the proposal. They already had information indicating that it would be even more difficult to pass with the arena attached. My initial thought, months ago, was that possibly there would be more support of the overall issue if Zips fans got on board to support it. I made one major miscalculation. Zips fans in Summit County, or anyone else that would benefit from an arena, unfortunately don't come close to outnumbering those who flat-out don't want to pay more for everything they buy. As I've stated many times, and it came to fruiting last night, sales tax increases are a bad idea. Unlike property taxes, sales tax increases affect everyone, not just property owners. The makeup of Summit County just isn't going to support a sales tax measure for an arena.
Big Zip
I voted no because they took the arena out of the deal.
ziptrumpet87
Big Zip, I thought about doing that also, but ended up voting for it anyway. Too many burglaries and such... I'm hoping they can keep more of them locked up.
tboned
The only way we are going to get a new arena is with a large single donation, or a whole bunch of us Alum giving nickels, dimes ,and dollars. Has anyone ever taken a straw poll of alum to see if any support exits? Not just support for the arena, but willingness to donate $$$. It's called crowdfunding, and the past few years have seen it really take off as a funding strategy for big projects.
GP1
For those of you in Charleston, any thoughts on TD Arena?
Dave in Green
I like TD Arena, and so did all the other Zips fans I spoke with. The 5,100-seat capacity is a little on the small side, but a slightly larger version would be nice for UA. Didn't look too closely at the second level, but it looked like it was only 4 rows of seats, so really easy to modify the basic design and add more rows to expand capacity. For those who haven't seen TD Arena, if the JAR had the same configuration the second level would be over the track instead of behind it. The angled, wraparound seating in the corners is nice. I thought the seating pitch could be a couple of degrees steeper, but most others seemed to think it was fine.

Balsy
I always thought that I'd personally pay for a new arena to be built of I won the 600,000,000 megamillions

Make the SEATS steep and 6000 people could be a deafening home court advantage. Seriously….arguably the top basketball program in the country (Duke) has only 9000 seats and NOBODY wants to play there.

tomzip
I like TD arena, maybe like Dave said, a little steeper pitch on the seats (make it a pit), but I like the "balcony" and around 6k seats, would be great. Looked up the cost in 2014 dollars, 50 million or so. Make that $49,999, 900 after my donation
