Worst Play Call in Football History?

No matter who was the victim of this witch hunt, I think points 2 and 3 in this article are the most important.

It's all a one sided process for the NFL. No questioning of anyone, and no disclosure of evidence before you have to attend a hearing?

I'm not saying that the NFL should have a system of discipline that mirrors our judicial system, but it's obvious that it's completely one-sided, and unfair to the players involved. Expect this to be the beginning of big changes. And I need to add....I'm usually against things that favor "spoiled" pro athletes. But not this time. It's ridiculous.

Justice - served.

I never liked the illogical "punishment" suggested by Goodell. My punishment I drafted back in May was more fitting. Karma has a funny way of serving its own dose of justice. I think the Bills, Dolphins, or Jets defensive line eventually (2 cracks each this year) serves up something closer to justice. Heck, I may eventually get my first suggestion of punishment through a different avenue.

Brady wins, but will case cause others to lose?

... This never was about the deflation of footballs. This never was an issue of whether Brady fronted a conspiracy. This was about the NFL Players Association legally challenging the terms of a CBA that it endorsed, a deal that gave Goodell far-reaching powers that enabled him to serve as judge, jury and executioner in league disciplinary matters.

If this ruling resulted from the NFL not understanding the lawful ramifications of its actions, it must immediately fire its legal counsel for incompetence. But if this ruling was nothing more than a single jurist voicing his own opinion, then it could start the unraveling of collectively bargained consent. ...

..we can all carry on with our own individual opinions on just how much guilt we believe each participant bears

Really, you need help? This piece will appear in a couple of weeks in ESPN the Mag. While one particular incident in this well written piece directly affected a life experience for me, younger Browns fans may find other parts of the story interesting. It will forever amaze me that this behavior is continually accepted, and celebrated, by this league. :(

That's a really well-researched story. I especially enjoyed the details about the quirky Ernie Adams, who's stealthily been doing statistical analysis for Belichick over the last quarter century. ;) Overall the NFL comes across like NASCAR, which has always played cat and mouse with teams pushing the limits of the rules right up to the edge and occasionally over -- some teams more aggressively than others. The old NASCAR saying credited to Richard Petty is: If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.

...pushing the limits of the rules right up to the edge and occasionally over.

The pushing continues by the same team over, and over, and over.... I'll go out on a limb and predict, if there is some kind of trumped up punishment, it won't fit the crime...again. Rinse and repeat. Nice history of a common "issue" in New England.

I'll give them credit for this one. This one is between the lines, and they are risking very little (a 15 yard penalty that would amount to inches)

Obviously the Patriots used an illegal cloaking device to get Gronk wide open!

Looks like the white and yellow team were having some kind of communication issues. Watch the entire game, for some reason they had a hard time lining up in the first half. Must be a first half cloaking device.

Tom Brady, greatest NFL qb of all time!

Maybe, maybe not. He tried to give it to the Falcons but they didn't want it and gifted it back. He was gifted another one previously with the worst play  call in football history, resulting in the creation of this thread.

I found it interesting this morning that the "Greatest Ever" poll was on Channel 3 morning news.  And the initial results were 60-some percent said NO.

And my wife immediately said to me, "How would you expect Browns and Suckeye fans in NE Ohio to respond to that?"

She's right.  They hate Belichick and hate Brady's alma mater.  I'm sure a poll in Michigan would overwhelmingly show the opposite results.  But I would be intrigued at how the national polls see this.

I don't tend to give individual players the Greatness label only because they played on great teams, but winning 5 Super Bowls and 4 MVP awards still has to put him at or near the top.  And last night had to be one of his greatest in-game changes ever.  He and his team could have easily wilted in that game.

Someone asked me an interesting question the other day:  What if Brady had played for the Browns over these last 15 years or so?  Would he even be getting talked about as anything special at all today?
