BJ Gladden Transferring

Akron1

Dambrot gave Gladden the entire year to prove he was a better option than McAdams or Kretzer. Gladden performed... "ok." In the end, McAdams and Kretzer proved they should get the bulk of the on-court minutes.

McAdams and Kretzer are both returning next year, so Gladden probably saw the writing on the wall that he wasn't going to see more than 8-10 minutes per game in 2015-16, and pulled the trigger on a transfer. I can't blame him. He wants to play basketball.

It's good news for Jackson, who'll stands to gain a few extra game-minutes as a result of Gladden's departure. And Deji's. But he too didn't distinguish himself in his limited court-time in 2014-15. He'll need to step up his game in the off-season if he wants to be a factor this upcoming season. Lots of other capable guys want those minutes too.

Another name on the list of transfers from this season is the former Walsh (and possibly Firestone??) baller, Evan Payne, who I have discussed previously. Evan intimated to me that he was indeed homesick for Akron during this season's Diamond head Classic, and I'm confident that with the type of full-court-press that occurred for Noah Robotham, this potential future NBA player could have been a Zip -- but as it ends up, Evan is "too good for the Zips."

Not surprised. Usually, if a walk-on in a program like Akron gets any kind of playing time outside garbage time, they move on and end up with a scholarship at a D-II or low major.

Makes room on the roster for Dunn, too.

Yep, not at all surprised either. No offense to Malcolm, but let's hope we don't have to play our walk-on PG next year.

Indiana, Virginia, UNLV, San Diego State, LSU, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Colorado, Texas, Memphis, USC, Tulsa, Xavier, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Utah, and St. John's

Clearly "homesick" has nothing to do with him transferring.

Malcolm Walters is transferring, per Prep Scouting.

THE CURSE OF THE ZIPS CONTINUES.

Malcolm sees the writing on the wall with potentially 3 point guards ahead of him, all of whom are in his class or younger. He'll help somewhere, but he's not well suited for top D1 play with his shooting deficiencies. I wish the kid well.

Sometimes you want to go home, but Home doesn't want you! Sometimes we just don't realize what's in our midst.

It is not that the Zips do not want Evan Payne. Look at the list of candidate schools listed. Nearly all

of them are on a higher tier than the MAC. Akron would happily take Payne if he offered his service;

per two coaches on staff.

Malcolm Walters AND Ricardo Hill are both looking for a D-2 or low major that will offer a scholarship. No one can blame them.

I completely understand going the JC route for it's flexibility to go "wherever" after one year.

But, does anyone find it a little odd that a guy who was a good talent, and a pretty fair contributor to a good D-1 program as a RS-Freshman didn't find a home at a much higher level upon his departure?

This move just seems like a universe away from what it seems like he was targeting.

Actually, he may very well have found a home at a high major or a good mid-major along the lines of Charlotte. This lets him play for a year instead of sitting out. If his target school has a good relationship/pipeline with the JUCO, then it's kind of like spending a year in the D-League.
