K92 Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 I wonder why no one is acknowledging this slide from UA's presentation:If no name change was the preferred approach, they certainly went to unnecessary effort to obtain mockups for a name change. John Zipp, president of the Akron chapter of the American Association of University Professors, said he’s heard many rumors about the Jan. 1 date circulating on campus.“I don’t know,” he said. “I’d like to know.” 1 Quote

RowdyZip Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 Since UA is a state institution, they likely operate on the state fiscal year. SFY 17 will begin 7/1/16. I'd imagine any name change/patent filings would happen a few months prior to that. Hope some of our local media will be monitoring the US patent office come spring. If so, this would be nearly impossible to sneak through. Quote
skip-zip Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 I still laugh every time I see the name John Zipp. Way too funny.Even though they say they had decided on a rebranding instead of a name change, it doesn't mean that it's completely off the table for future consideration, I guess. But, I am at least a bit comforted in FINALLY hearing someone say that the name change ideas was "discarded". I sure hope that's the end of it. I can find a way to live with the "rebranding". Quote
skip-zip Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 Rowdy Zip...It would be a name change, not a patent. That's handled by the State. And I've been told that it would also need several levels of approval, which would be unlike a business choosing a name as long as no other business already has that name. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 Just to clarify, THIS johnnyzip actually thinks there may be some merit to a name change. I realize I am in the very small minority on this, but I do think there is POTENTIAL for the university to have a broader appeal outsde of this region with a name similar to the ones that have been tossed around. Many colleges and universities have done this over the years. Now don't take this as my complete support for Scarborough - there are plenty of things I don't agree with outside of this topic. Quote

Dave in Green Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 ... You must just be a person that accepts words as truth. You must get excited listening to politicians. You know better than that as I'm on record rejecting as untrue many words I read on this forum. You must get excited listening to yourself. Quote

That makes sense, but wouldn't they likely file image patents on new logos prior to any name change? Its definitely more complicated than a guy changing the name of a 140 year old school just because he wants to. I also don't see the state board of regents being a pushover and allowing UA to assume the name "Ohio" anything. Their pro-OSU stance is evident enough through the OU-OSU tiffs over that word. Quote
Dave in Green Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 I believe that images are copyrighted, not patented. Quote

skip-zip Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 Dave...You're right. Copyright and Trademarks would be involved in that part of it. Not patents. RowdyZip...I think you are right that there would a lot of resistance from OSWho and OU. Quote

g-mann17 Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 I was just trying to be the facebook comments.Bottom line, is that they are trying to draw in students, and let prospective students know we are more than what they may have assumed. The biggest change I have noticed on campus, is that the branding, is focused on the student (as it should be), and not Luis Proenza, or the new buildings. We will see if it impacts enrollment or not sometime next year.To grow enrollment, you have to do two key things, recruit hard, and limit drop out/transfers. The commercials/marketing do the first part. But for the second, being present and making the student feel like they are a part of something requires faculty/admin involvement and I have heard that is lacking. Quote
skip-zip Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 gmann17...."Growing Enrollment" doesn't make you successful as a University. You can accomplish that by simply admitting more and more of your applicants. Make the programs great, and turn out well-educated and successful alums, which results in higher and higher levels of student talent wanting to get a degree that says The University of Akron. That should always be the goal. And at this point, I don't see how investing resources in a new and misunderstood tag line is going to accomplish any of that. Quote
Dave in Green Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 It's a pretty simple formula, really. UA is trying to attract more smart students. The smarter the student the more likely they are to understand what polytechnic means. Less scholarly students are less likely to understand what polytechnic means and may tend to shy away from UA. Mission accomplished. Quote
K92 Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 More like, the smartest students realize how stupid this whole rebranding is and stay away in droves. Quote
