Jatavis Brown had 5 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle, 2 tackles for loss including 1 sack and a forced fumble, and 2 passes defended in Chargers 22-26 loss to the Colts. Brown replaced Manti Te'o who went down with a non contact injury in the first quarter. Brown was expected to start next week against the Saints, however this depends on the status of his leg injury.

With 1:08 remaining in the second quarter, #57 Jatavis Brown strip sacks Colts QB Andrew Luck. Brown's teammate DT #91 Caraun Reid picks up the loose football and rambles 61 yards to the end zone for a TD.

Brown had a nice showing. The Chargers ended up losing though.

PFF

Top defensive grades:

LB Jatavis Brown, 88.0
CB Casey Hayward, 87.0
DE Corey Liuget, 80.0
DE Tenny Palepoi, 80.0
LB Denzel Perryman, 78.1

Brown a star in the making?

Besting his previous snap count high of 31 by one, Jatavis Brown continues to flash the kind of playmaking ability that will make it hard for the Chargers not to put him on the field more. He turned his sack into a big fumble of Andrew Luck, added two more defensive stops and two pass breakups.

PFF ranks him in top 10 rookies, so far: https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-top-10-rookies-through-nfl-week-3/?utm_content=buffer98bda&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=nfl

Coming out of Akron, I had no clue what I would do with Jatavis Brown. He was too big for a safety, and too raw against the run to play linebacker. One thing I knew he could do, however, was blitz, as he tallied a ludicrous 15 sacks last year from an off-ball position. Already we’ve seen that prowess ring true in the NFL, as he has the highest pass-rushing grade of any off-ball linebacker. Brown

Interesting analysis of Jatavis Brown's play-making ability prior to the Chargers 34-35 loss to the Saints in which Brown led the defense with 7 solo tackles.

On the Chargers message board, a comparison was made between Brown and the LB he replaced as follows:

"I think the most telling stats are these:"

'In 38 games play, Te’o had 9 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble, and 1.5 sacks. In 82 snaps, rookie Jatavis Brown has 4 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble, and a sack.'

"This is really mind-boggling. In just a couple of games, as a BACK-UP, Brown has now equalled Teo on forced fumbles, nearly equalled him on sacks, and has already defensed nearly half the passes Teo has defensed over three years! And Teo is supposedly our best cover LB. If we extrapolate Brown's numbers over three years, he'd be top of the league among LB's."

TOP 10 NFL ROOKIES ENTERING WEEK 5

With Week 4 in the books, we’ve witnessed one of the largest shakeups in PFF’s race for rookie of the year yet. Four new faces make the list, including three players in the secondary. Of course, it’s the quarterbacks that still reign supreme.

7. Jatavis Brown, LB, Chargers

It’s the year of the Day 3 pick, as we see another Saturday selection make the top-10. Jatavis is currently grading above-average in run defense, coverage, and when rushing the passer. With that kind of production, the Chargers’ coaching staff has taken notice, moving him to a full-time role after the season-ending injury to Manti Te’o, instead of limiting the rookie to sub-packages. He played 68 snaps against the Saints, and is currently PFF’s 25th highest-graded linebacker.
