Time to hire a special teams coach?

I think we had this discussion last year, but isn't JD the special teams coach too? A field goal and extra point and this game is 25-24 or at least tied at 24. Is Domonkos 1-3 now? I was really excited when he the 46 yarder in the rain at Penn State and now this? How has he missed two extra points? Did someone say Igor is hurt?

You can add in the terrible blocking on FG's and punts...the horrid long-snapping...the mishandled punts...our kicking game is a wreck. When you're struggling to hit XP's...life is bad. It bit us today.

special teams are horrible. igor being hurt is killing us, assuming he really is as good as advertised. domonkos is a walk on, i believe. what more can we really expect from a walk on, non-scholarship kicker? missed extra points, blocked punt, poor return coverage, long snapping problems. we had a return team member just stand there after catching a kick off and not know what to do. i rarely question JD but i think it's time for a special teams coach.

I really like Stec. He is doing a good job, imo. He's young and under lots of pressure, but he continues to get decent punts off, somehow. This poor kid who's doing the place kicking is just horrible. It's only the third game and he's already blown 2 extra points. Nationally, JD was being praised for his gutsy call with 3 seconds left last week. He didn't have a choice, his kicker couldn't have made a field goal from the 3 yard line. That's why he put the ball in Kennedy's hands. The Zips must be able to convert extra points and short field goals to win games. I never saw this coming, because they had signed Igor. Without him, it may be a long season.

Stec is a true Freshamn. I think he will end up being a good one. I thought the kicker was a transfer from Wisci, or another B10 school. Either way, he needs work.Igor being out all season will hurt. Hopefully he at least gets to practice some and be 100% for spring ball next year. That way he can take over next season ready to go.As for this season, I hope it never comes down to an XP or FG for a win.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Domonkos transferred here from Wisconsin -- as in the Badgers. He can't be that bad can he.....there has to be something else, thus migh comment about need for special teams coach. I googled him again and found a 2003 article about the Badgers where he was going to push the kicker as a Freshman.

Here's another approach. The Univ of Akron announces that it will be giving out scholarships as part of a new promotion during football games. When students show up, they fill out a contest entry (aka statement of academic eligibility). At halftime, they come out on the field and kick from the 10, 15, and 20 yard lines while some brave soul holds the ball. If someone can get it through the uprights, they not only win a scholarship but we put a jersey on them and they can play the second half. :D

Actually, interestingly enough, I heard from one of the guys on the team a couple years back that Kevin Grant could kick better than any kicker on the team. Apparently just messing around he'll blast 50 yard field goals through the uprights before practices. I know his legs would be worn out in games, but shit, maybe he could at least kick extra points for us.

I strongly believe we need a special teams coach! Watch JD during a game...he is trying to keep so many things staright! He should be managing his assistants, not trying to micromanage the whole game. I would imagine if you looked at most D-1 schools, they either have a special teams or kicking coach, or someone responsible. But not the head coach! As for Hildreth, coach liked him enough to put him on scholarship this year. But he is only punting. His bio says he had a 47 yarded in high school, so why not have him try?Or maybe let him punt and Stec place kick? Can't hurt!

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer at PK. But we can make a change at punter! How long can we stand the mediocrity we now have! I'm sorry to you folks that think Stec is so good. Are you willing to accept lesser performamces just because he's a freshman? Every game we have a dropped snap, block, shank, and in one out of every 10, a good one? We can't shackle our punt team this way. They have to stop and see where the punt is going and react to it. They should be able to pin their ears back and know where the ball is going. My vote,,,,give Hildreth a try!

Article on Stec: Palm Beach PostAtlantic grad, punter not thrilled to be sorely neededBy Jason LieserPalm Beach Post Staff WriterSaturday, September 23, 2006Playing time is bittersweet for Akron punter John Stec.Stec is sixth among freshmen with an average of 36.3 yards per punt, and he gets plenty of attempts. The Zips' third-down conversion percentage (26.5) ranks 113th in the nation."When I have a good game, it doesn't mean the team had a good game," Stec said. "I don't necessarily want to be in the game at times."The Atlantic High graduate won a close contest with sophomore Andy Hildreth for the starting job, and immediately found himself on one of the biggest stages in college football. The Zips opened their season at Penn State's Beaver Stadium, where 106,505 fans roared throughout the rain-soaked afternoon."It was crazy," Stec said. "Especially being in front of 5,000 at the most back in Delray, and now being in front of over 100,000 is a total change of atmosphere."Another new experience for Stec is the speed of college defenses."Every time I punt the ball there's somebody within a foot of me," he said. "They're going to be there every time. It's such a different world. College football is so much faster."
