Akron mayor urges community to support University of Akron football team

I was at that event. It was awesome. Was told they hosted similar events in: Cbus, Akron, Pitt, and DC. It was held at Butcher and Brewer. Open bar and good food selection. Free alumni T and two basket giveaways. Was about to get a state of the MAC conversation with Larry but he had to speak to the audience. I'd guess 60 people attended. Really hope they keep doing stuff like this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but II think they said it was their first event in Cleveland in 20 years. Absolutely unacceptable considering, outside of Akron, I'd wager the largest alumni base is there.

Didn't get a exact year but one of the girls in charge said she didn't know if there had ever been something like this before. Totally agree this should be a biannual event. I also suggested alumni watch parties.

First of all, speaking from personal experience, I think Cleveland should absolutely be a good recruiting ground for us.  I was born and grew up in the Cleveland area, and had no interest at all in going to Cleveland State, but wanted to go somewhere else that wasn't far away.  I also became a lifelong Zips fan in the process.  I think there are tons of prospective students in the Cleveland area who fit that category.

On the subject of the thread, you would think it should be a simple thing that the Mayor publicly pushes for people to support the Zips, but we don't get that.  The City should be putting up Akron banners.  We should be seeing the government offices and businesses displaying signs, etc.  I see it in so many other cities with a D-1 sports school.  I've always been disgusted at why it doesn't happen here.

The mayor's statement that "This is our homegrown University" nearly sent chills through me.  This is the way it should be.

Mr. Mayor:  Please do all of us a favor and also walk down to the ABJ offices and remind them of the same thing.

Some things are starting to happen in 2016 that should have been done from the get-go 30 years ago when the U made the decision to go D-1A.  The whole she-bang has been bungled for such a long time that it is almost shocking that some of these positive things are happening.  I hope it continues.

I just saw that this weekend is family weekend. Why would they schedule that the week of an away football game instead of making a home game a centerpiece for family weekend?

Agreed. Seems like an easy way to give a little boost to attendance for a program that really needs any help it can get.

It would have been a great idea, that's why we don't see it here.  Hopefully, things like this will be better coordinated in the future with better leadership decisions being made recently.

This reminds me what ruined my day today.  I had to go to an Akron General facility today, and everyone was dressed in Ohio State gear.  I'm assuming that they all want to show their support for tomorrow for their "home team".  Yes....I said Akron General.  Our hometown hospital.  Do you think hospitals in Pittsburgh PA have Penn State Pride day at work?  Or, hospitals in Buffalo have Syracuse Pride Day?  The answer is a big NO.
