Except people don't want to go to ANY game for 4+ hours, Browns, Ohio State, Cavs or otherwise. I agree that the gameday atmosphere is going to make attendance better, but part of that is shortening the damn games.  4 hours is WAY TO LONG for a game that only takes 1.  This isn't 1924, people aren't looking for one thing to entertain themselves for 4 hours.

Good point.  In some way, this could all certainly be attributed to the changes in our society.  They say that this is the reason why enclosed Shopping Malls are failing, and why golf is dropping so much in popularity.  A four hour sporting event could be a victim of this same trend.  Come to think of it, I doubt that there is a football stadium anywhere in the country anymore where the fans are not hitting the exits early in droves, if they feel that the game has already been decided, one way or the other.  If all they cared about was getting a full 4 hours of "entertainment" they would stay, right?

I don't think this is a big part of the problem, but it could definitely have an impact.

The problem at Akron isn't people show up then leave after the end of the 3rd quarter. Its that they aren't showing up to begin with.

But, it's certainly possible that many don't come to begin with, because of the 4+ hour commitment.

I was also careful to note that I don't think that the length of the game is our biggest obstacle.  But, it could have an impact.

I think the people in charge of rules must certainly be well aware of the problem.  Hopefully they can do something about it.

The question is how much the people in charge of the rules seem to care about the problem. TV seems to drive college football, and the ratings are up (unlike NFL). Hence #MACtion.

4 hour games are a huge problem, but it's definitely NOT the biggest obstacle. The impression in Akron, as well as other MAC schools, is that it is not "big time" college football, like OSU. The average fan (heck, even a lot of students) thinks we're in a lower division than B1G, etc. So, it really doesn't matter if we have the #23 ranked team coming in on Saturday, we're still not big time and neither is WMU (in the minds of Joe Akron).

I don't know if this is good or not compared to normal. They do seem to be promoting this one a heck of a lot more though.

Well I think there are a total of 42 seating sections at InfoCision. That's not including those club boxes. Maybe they sold out 5 of them? lol

Either way 5-6 sections full seems normal.

42 but based on the seating chart only half are "reserved".  Starting with 2016 the entire east stands were converted to General Admission and Student seating "Home of the AK-Rowdies".  So 5 sections would be about half of the lower section of the western stands.

The real question is are those sold out sections one's that were pretty close to sold out anyway.

At least they are trying to sell it.

This is great; however, how many of these people are casual fans? I am concerned that if we get blown out, they will be turned off for years to come. I believe we can win this game although a 2-3 TD victory for WMU is not out of the question given their quality, which the casual fan has no appreciation.

They definitely seem to be pushing this game more than others. I just wonder how strong word of mouth is right now.

When I was a student it seemed like the word of mouth was the strongest marketing tool. Everyone always talked about the next soccer game and we knew it was the place to be that night. No one ever used excuses of weather or timing. You scheduled around the games. Football never had that feel and sadly basketball didn't either. Maybe when Kent or OU came to town, but that's it.

Anyone remember the last time we beat WMU? 38-37 in 2007...I recall listening to Frenchy going nuts on the radio about a kick return. I believe it was very late and was the go-ahead score. Such a thrilling win would be very timely for the home crowd and the progrum.

It was the LAST PLAY of the game.  All WMU had to do was cover a punt, and the game was over.

Someone posted the clip on another page in this thread.  Go catch it.  Frenchy and Stams' radio call is priceless.

I imagine we will see an uptick in traveling fans for this game.

Yes, I'd agree that the diehard fans of a 6-0 team ranked #23 could easily justify a 4-5 hour trip.  I think the game time really helps too.

If it was the other way around, I'm sure plenty of Akron people would make the trip up there.
