Z-P Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 Passing thoughts from a long time observer...........1. Sorry to start yet another thread, honest...........but after reading what's on the board already, the silence from the hard corp old timers is deafening, and maybe this is a spot they can drop in a line or two and feel "safe"2. Dix has ALWAYS been a hard house for us to play in. Down thru the years it seems our "Game" deserts us when we step onto that field.............we've come away with our share of W's, but we've ended up doing it unconventionally as compared to how the team played the rest of the season..............know what I mean?3. Note to newbies: This is the Mid American Conference.............anything can happen on any given day or night.4. Team "emotion" IS important. Remember the 1st game of the 03 season? That was a repeat of it yesterday..............except or the fact that Superman was in Gold and Blue that night, and if the coaching staff wouldn't have failed the team, the guy could have bought them back..............despite the fact that those guys played D like only 6 or 7 guys were on the field at any given time.5. I enjoyed and agreed with that comment by ITZ that this staff is responsible for the greatest victories and the worst losses............very true. Not THE WORST nor THE BEST however..........NIU was THE BIGGEST however, and Army was the BIGGEST FART IMHO.6. Attendance? We've been here before. 8-10,000 hard corps fans like Doc, Capt, the newly interested, hard corp taligating former players will show up and we'll report 15,001 so don't sweat the "asses in the stands" requirement.7. Uhh.............hate to say this..................but those guys looked pretty good yesterday. That mohawk can take the day of however. Kudos to Doug Martin and staff.8. Last but not least.............as far as going to a bowl, or the record for 06 is concerned............ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, but these guys still have to show up and play hard, because they've been reading about themselves (newbie posts mostly) here on the board, and they think they are all going to the NFL (some late first rounders! )..............so they won't quit, and we'll still be entertained (if we get out to the games). It's not life and death............(insert a serious political comment here if you really want something to be sick to your stomach about)8 1/2. All my frikin teams lost over the last two days, damn...........8 3/4. We still have the Basketball Season............ Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 As a old Zips fans, I guess this is where I should chime in:* Yet another crappy day for football. Tailgating in the rain is getting old.* K.e.n.t's QB was awesome. I would never have guesses a 5' 10" K.e.n.t QB in his 4th career game would throw for over 300 yards vs this Akron defense. Yeah, his long jump balls the the WR's looked like "anybody's ball" but they always seemed to be placed in a position where we had no chance at the INT and the WR had the best chance to get the ball.* Kudos to the K.e.n.t offensive coordinator for keeping his foot on our throat the entire game. After every big play, there was the K.e.n.t offense winging the ball down the field while our D was on its heels.* Edelmann also made numerous mid-range completions to wide open WR's and TE's. At NC State, Stone threw a lot of those at people's feet. Stone made us look a little better than we really were.* Speaking of feet...is the book out on the Zips that running the QB out of the shotgun is a "money" 7 yards+? Edelmann did the same thing to us that the CMU QB did a couple weeks ago. Run at will.* What a stupid play by our DL to hit the K.en.t QB late in the 1st qtr. 3rd and 17 and we give them a first down.* The OL isn't playing as well as they did last season. And...for the life of me...I can't figure out why some of the heralded Fr. reserve OL's aren't seeing any playing time. We play essentially the same 5 guys every down whether or not they're holding every play...getting beat every play...whether we're up by 30 or down by 22. At some point we need to start getting our youner players some time on the field. Especially if some of the vets are struggling.* Luke is great when he has time. But, he's slow. This exaccerbates our OL's struggles. Luke really can't buy too much time with his feet. Conversely, the few times we got pressure on Edelmann, it was no big deal for him to sidestep our guy and buy another 5 seconds.* Our LB's couldn't cover the short pass, and never could spy the QB. We were always guessing, and guessing wrong.* The season-long lack of a pass rush finally bit us today. * Going back to mistakes...what was Kennedy thinking when he sat on his butt on 3rd and 1?! He had the 1st down...no whistle blew...and he just sits on his butt and loses 3 yards. K.e.n.t was converting 3rd downs left and right, and we were waving white flags.* Kennedy also had a brain fart when he let Luke's fumble roll instead of falling on it. Another K.e.n.t TD soon followed. * Yet another puzzling decision was JD, after a K.e.n.t running-into-the-punter penalty, deciding not to go for the 4th and 2??!! We were down by three scores and our defense hadn't stopped K.e.n.t all day?? Did we have something to lose?* Kasparek's head wasn't in the game. Couple of uncharacteristic drops.* How bad would our offense be without David Harvey's emergence? He pretty much IS our offense now-a-days. In fairness to Jabari - he did have another nice TD grab in the endzone. * The K.e.n.t punter looked like he totally sucked. Too bad we could never make them punt.* Eugene Jarvis was not impressive.* Wow...we got drubbed by K.e.n.t in football. Pretty much knocked us out of the MACC game. Does it get any worse?* We beat Cincinnati and we'll have two wins vs BCS schools on our 2006 resume. That should get us on of the three available bowl bids even if we stumble once more down the stretch. The game this week will tell us alot about the Zips' moxie and the staff's preparation skills. Cinci isn't better than us. We should win. After what I saw yesterday, we could also lose by 25.* Hats off to K.e.n.t. Great crowd and a solid ass whuppin'. I finally saw what it was like for a team in a Zips game to put together 4 consecutive quarters of playing to their capabilities. Unfortunately, it was K.S.U that did it, not the Zips.* I'll figure out where the tailgate lot is in Cinci and let everyone know. My guess - Gameday will be cold and rainy. Just a hunch.... Quote
GP1 Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 Excellent posts! I'm just writing this to move this back to the top.I love it when Z-P posts like he was there when the concrete was drying on the Rubber Bowl. Quote

Down thru the years it seems our "Game" deserts us when we step onto that field.............we've come away with our share of W's, but we've ended up doing it unconventionally as compared to how the team played the rest of the season..............know what I mean?I remember Astron Whatley running wild in a game the Zips had easily in-hand with about 6 minutes remaining. We blew something like a 17 point lead in the 4th quarter. That was the game Jason Taylor ripped a banner off the Dix stadium wall to get the F.l.a.s.h.e.s all fired up.I also remember the Dwight Smith final game in 2002? In our win we scored about 34 points, and 28 of them were directly attributed to Dwight. K.S.U grossly outplayed us otherwise. It might have been the single-most unbelieveable game by a college CB in NCAA history. Me and about 78 others saw it @ Dix.The only positive coming off this loss is that so many people are crushed by it. The University wants people to care about the program...now you have it. 5 years ago, you wouldn't have had 10 posts after this type of loss. Now there's 100's.The Miami game can still be a decent draw on the 21st, but we need to win this week. You feelin' me, JD? ARE YOU FEELIN' DA ZIPMAN??!! (speaking of old timers, whatever happened to that nutcase...in an odd way, I miss him?)One final note: This must have worked for the K.e.n.t guys, huh?:An "Akron Effort" is characterized by extreme individual effort during a workout. This type of effort signifies the qualities needed to be a Champion. Quote
Dr Z Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 I still feel I can't bring myself to type. I'll try tomorrow.Good post Z-P. Quote
AK-Zips Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 as a zipper of 6 years it is does not exaclty classify me as old by normal standards, but by zips standards i believe it does. being out of state i was watching some football during the afternoon while keeping track of the zips game on gametracker. when Can't State scored first i think i threw up a little bit in my mouth. throughout the game i felt sick to my stomach and writing this post makes me feel just as bad. at least i know in the back of my mind that and they can never take away our 2005 trophy. the season is not over; actually only about half way with the big games coming up in the mac schedule. i have only been away from zippyland for a short time but i feel your pain. i consider myself on old guy, especially on this board, well actually the old blue board. here's to basketball season and taking away the Can't State thunder where they took it from us! I always like to see a Dwight Smith reference. I sometimes forget what a great player he was. I doubt the school has had a better "football player". He played corner, safety, running back, wide receiver, ran back kicks and blocked kicks. The guy could do it all. Quote

zipboy Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Still too depressed to read many of the posts. Just a couple comments to add1. 2 times I reemeber a mismatch where we had a LB on a receiver. One was exploited for a TD. The other was the roughing the passer.2. No huddle threw us off from the beginning.3. Why don't we no huddle? Offense seems to move the ball better in a hurry up.4. Kudos to Can't for the win, but no way anyone can convince me they have more talent than us. They sure played a better game and executed.5. Still in shock Quote
RACER Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 im with zipboy.im still in shock about the Can't game.not that we lost the game, but how we lost it. i thought it would be a close game either way.i thought maybe the kicking game would give us problems, but it did not even come down to that. we played better at penn state than Can't State, and no way can't has more talent. i do agree with ck the late hit when we had Can't stopped killed any chance we had at that point of winning. Still in shock #3 - I have been saying this ever since we drove all over NCState's Defense, they may not be a good team but they have faster team speed then any team we will play the remainder of the year! We didn't lose to Penn State as bad as we lost to Can't - So that tells me we were either not ready to play or they had a great game plan. But I really think we should go no huddle!!! Keeps teams on their heals. Quote

Buckzip Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 3. Note to newbies: This is the Mid American Conference.............anything can happen on any given day or night. I hate to sound like a weenie, but this is the most over used cliche in all of sports. Every single conference in every single sport says the same thing.Anyway, UA sucked, Can't played great. 1 team was ready, the other wasn't . Quote
ZipDude Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 Wow, my old buddy "The Padre" weighs in and starts a great thread. Ill post just to bring it to the top of the pile. Padre, I love you Man. My info on the debacle comes from a former player. He said the Can't QB had a career day, and JD got outcoached. Additionally, Getsey does not have the mojo to make something happen like 5 could when it really needed to happen like on 3rd and long. I am still bitching about the OL. they suck and some or all of them should sit and let the young lions play who are hungry. If this staff ahd been in place at this point in their evolvement with the players in the 3rd 4th and 5th year of 5's carreer and those players and their talent back in the day, this program would be in a totally different place. Oh well, another old country heard from. Beware of the Bearcats. Quote
Z-P Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 It's about time you get back in here Dudie.............You've got the time...........hell, it's not even tax season yet! And another thing, quit dissing the O-Line........didn't you hear, couple of them are sure to be late first day picks! Quote
