With the spring roster updates (losing Logan Hawkins who I believe wasn't out of eligibility but walked for senior day, Caleb Herring (OL), Adetutu Daranjo (S), Ryan McClain (OLB), and Brycen Yarmo (TE),  I have us down to 82 scholarship players. I'm sure there will be a couple additional leave after spring ball. Our biggest loss thus far to the portal was Tristian Brank. The staff has done a really good job retaining the talent we have on the roster, and we should have 5-6 scholarships to use in the 2nd portal period. With those numbers along with another wave of players who hit after they realize they aren't part of the team's future the upcoming season, I feel really good about the staff addressing the few remaining holes we have, which I would address by adding 2 DE, 1 OL, 1 CB, and maybe 1 LB.

I agree that Brank will be a loss.  I was looking at the roster today and it seems like the numbers of players at several positions have been reduced.  Unless the reductions were walk-ons, I would expect the scholarship number to be less than 82, but I am probably wrong and not challenging LZip.  My idea on needs are such: OL to replace Whitgen (?sp), another DT portal addition (hopefully with 2-3 years of eligibility remaining), and another LB portal addition (hopefully with 2-3 years of eligibility remaining).  If Irons can become a competent QB, and the Zips get some portal additions, we may have a good 2023 season.

Go Zips!!!

Creating a scholarship chart thread at the request of a few. Attaching what we have to date. As always, there are some assumptions that are going to be made. This currently includes:

  • Each starting K, PK, and LS, regardless of who they are, have a scholarship.
  • Assumes the following players who haven't been announced, either in the formal university announcement process or on social media as a walk-on earning one, but have played substantially or even started are on scholarship:
    • Tyson Durant, Andrew Behm, and Alex Robarge.
  • The current list includes includes the following new members: 2022 announced signees (linked here), and the additional portal commitments we've had since then.
    • I didn't include Keylen Davis for now as he is the only freshman signee not listed on the roster. I also don't think we have any early enrollees from the freshman considering we didn't sign anyone until the Feb signing day and the semester would have started in January. So him potentially not being listed for that reason shouldn't be the case.
  • Took some liberty in assigning the class of last year's freshman as either red-shirt or not based on PT I recall them getting. I think there will be a lot of updates to the classes on the online roster between now and the season.

Right now, the list shows exactly 85 scholarships with 24 new players added. This means we can add up to 8 more as we should or will be at the 32 limit threshold. The typical annual threshold is 25, but beginning with 2022, the NCAA has allowed that number to increase by 1 for each player who voluntarily enters the portal, up to 32 total. The overall scholarship limit is back down to 85 as far as I know, so to add any new players, we would need some to leave...which will undoubtedly happen at the conclusion of spring ball.

Maintaining this is a group effort. I have basically no inside info, so if there is somebody on or not on scholly that you're aware of and the list doesn't reflect it, please let me know.

Any idea where we stand? If my math is right, we’ve added as many scholarship players as we’ve lost. We are still offering guys so we must have at least a few scholarships still open. I think we are at 81 now, but not totally sure. It’s some of the remaining players from the Arth era that is throwing me off.

Oddly enough, I have us right at 85, assuming starting punter, PK, and LS will be on scholly. Various possibilities like signees from 2023 not coming, players retiring and not entering transfer portal, maybe someone like Hester was only put on scholly last year but not for this year? Additionally, Brian Kilbane is a player who walked on last year that is probably in line for a scholly...

As always, if somebody knows something different than I'm assuming, please speak up.

Thanks. I’m assuming Hester and Durant will stay on the scholarships they earned last year, but could be wrong. The guys I’m unsure about are Kilbane, Robarge, and Georges. I’d think they are all on scholarship at this point? I don’t believe any of the kickers or LS are currently on scholarship, but makes sense that the guys who win the position will eventually be placed on scholarship. Although that may not be necessary if they are already on full academic scholarships.

Wiley, Castle and Perez were given a spring semester scholarship the other day and told the starting LS, P, Kicker and if Perez is the starter then also the starting KO will be on scholarship next year.  Obviously nothing is concrete until next year it could all change.

*We have a roster*

All newcomers expected appear to be here. Only one I didn't see from this years cycle, who I believe was here in spring, was Ahmad Rabah (DE from D2 or D3). Also notice some number changes and Darius Owens listed as a RB, but I think that might be an error as I don't think he even played it at all in high school. Saquan's brother is here. I'm still having us as 2 over the limit, when I believe Cap'n mentioned Coach said they were two under the limit (which I assume would be reserved for specialists as we aren't adding new players at this time). Honestly not sure at this point who is on the team that we have down as being on scholly that isn't. AJ George would be my only guess as he was also a walk on at Cinci.

Nice job as always @LZIp! I’m sure you’re right about Owens. For some reason Castle is still listed as OL, Camari Harris now shows as a redshirt freshman, and DT Kyle Thomas as 230lbs. Definitely some fat fingering by someone.

Assuming the rest is correct, nice to see all the incoming JUCOs with multiple years of eligibility.

Too bad about Rabah. Even though he didn’t do much in the spring game, I hoped he would have a strong offseason and provide some pass rush this year.

Seems we confirmed before that AJ George is on scholarship? The ones I’m still confused about are Kilbane, Georges, Robarge, Yarmo, and Behm. I’m assuming Durant and Hester carried their scholarships over and were not only for a semester.

I have us at 79 scholarships right now. Is that what you have @LZIp?

I got us at 77. Curious what our differences are. I only included Jackson in our specialist group (someone last year mentioned he's only ST player on scholly), I excluded Terray Jones. While it would be awesome if he was back, he's played majority of games in 19, 21, 22, 23. Don't see how he'd have anymore eligibility or any good chances on a medical redshirt.

Yep. I just assumed the other two would be given to the starting K and LS. If not, then it’s 77 like you said.
