Hopefully someone can bring in a desperately needed grocery store to downtown That's a great idea. It doesn't even have to be huge. Harris Teeter has a small two story store in uptown Charlotte. It's walkable for a lot of people and serves basic grocery needs. I'm sure in the winter months in Akron an enterprising person could come up with some kind of delivery service for the store. I think Uber already offers services like this.

Over the years the U has gobbled up empty buildings seemingly without a long-term plan for them. Old Central-Hower High School for one. But the ultimate example is Quaker Square. The fact that University architect Ted Curtis was part owner of that complex should have triggered many alarms at the city and state levels. The University acquiring Quaker Square was a huge issue with the city at the time. If I recall correctly the city tried to fight it. Akron had plans for expansion as they thought their 25k enrollment was going to grow to 50k. Instead it collapsed to ~15k. @GP1 is right the University shouldn't be in the business of redevelopment. One can't go back and undue what was already done, but they should look to offload properties and other assets that no longer fit the revised vision of the university. Use the assets to reduce the debt burden and reduce upkeep costs. Perhaps a developer will come in and make the community more attractive for potential students. The University holding decaying assets with little to no use does nothing for the university or city. zippy5
A good downtown is good for enrollment imo. It's in UA's best interest for downtown to be an attractive place to a 20 year old
