skip-zip
I'm originally from Lake County, and received a message today from a friend up there telling me that Alex Sullivan, a Junior Guard from Painesville Riverside, has just committed to Akron. He was a D-1 3rd Team selection in Ohio this past year....as a JUNIOR....and averaged 25.5 points per game. Some sources up in my old hometown tell me that he's been the best player in Lake County for the past couple of years.WOW...the basketball talent that Dambrot is landing is just phenomenal. Go Zips!!!!

skip-zip
I'm also hearing that Ohio State REALLY wanted this guy. How often is it that we can steal a player from the Suckeyes?
Buckzip
I'm also hearing that Ohio State REALLY wanted this guy. How often is it that we can steal a player from the Suckeyes? Great player for the Zips. If the other school you mentioned wanted him, they would be taking the scholly away from the rest of the top 10 nationally ranked players at their postions.Maybe they talked with him, but talking with him and "wanting him" implying they offered him a scholly, are 2 different things. Please provide a link that they offered him. skip-zip
At this point, I'm being given all of this information verbally from people that are very connected with high school basketball up in that area. They were all rather surprised, and their reactions were all "wow..we thought he was going to pick Ohio State".Why do some of you guys act defensive when you see that a player may have passed up Ohio State to go to Akron? If you are a true Zips fan, you WANT that to happen. It looks like this news has not even hit the papers or anything yet. Not sure when we might hear more about him, or his list of offers. Zip Watcher
Well, I can't find the guy at either Rivals or Scout .. so it's tough to gage what caliber of player he might be. All State Honors (special mention as a Soph & 3rd Team D1 as a Junior) are pretty good indicators I would guess.FYI, he was the PD's Lake/Geauga Player of the Year in 06/07.What's more? Dude's got his own website. You can be hit #25 if you click on this link quick enough:See some stats & other info @ Sullivan's website. That is not the case at all. I would love UA to get guys that the other team wanted. However, if someone is going to make a statement like that, it should be true. skip-zip
Zip Watcher....thanks for the info. on the website. Wow...I had not been told that he was the Cleveland Plain Dealer Player Of The Year. Buck Zip...all I know is what I'm being told right now by some very prominent people associated with high school basketball in that area. It's all I have right now. Hopefully, we'll hear more about this guy soon. Sorry if I mistakenly associated you with some of the folks that come on here who think that "it cannot be possible" that players would choose Akron over the high and mighty Ohio State Buckeyes. All I can say is.......basketball is looking pretty darn promising in the coming years. And it can't come soon enough. PLEASE...help me forget how this year ended. Big Zip
Here's to hoping he'll grow some in the next year. 5'11" is taller than me, but it's not terribly tall for Div. 1 Basketball. Although it hasn't seemed to stop him yet.
Z.I.P.
Here's to hoping he'll grow some in the next year. 5'11" is taller than me, but it's not terribly tall for Div. 1 Basketball. Although it hasn't seemed to stop him yet.I don't know anything more about the kid than what I've read on this board, but at first glance I have to ask: 5-11 and a shooting guard? Doesn't look like he could be expected to play the point. He hasn't hit the map beyond NE Ohio yet.Not to doubt, or detract from the kid's potential -- he's scored a bunch of points for sure -- but just because he's "committed" to Akron, dowsn't mean Akron has committed (offered) to him. Who was the Bedford PG who committed to Michigan and Ohio State BOTH, but whose only D-1 offers came from Hipsher and South Florida, where he ended up? Let's wait until we hear more on this story before we name him the heir apparent to Nick Dials.
skip-zip
Z.I.P. - He's certainly "hit the map" beyond NE Ohio if he is a 3rd Team All-State selection in D-1 after only his Junior year. And to get Cleveland-area Player of the Year as a Junior is quite an accomplishment too. The reason I'm excited is because, only a few years ago, Akron simply wasn't getting players with those kinds of credentials. I'll be honest and say I didn't hear about him either until I had people calling me with this news over the weekend. I haven't paid too much attention in recent years to what is going on up in my old neck of the woods.I hope we hear more soon, and I sure hope he's as good as what I'm hearing from people that have been following his career over the last few years. Zip Watcher
I'll clarify (restate) what I said above:Sullivan was the Lake & Geauga county POY in the PD. He was not the PD area player of the year .. he won top honors for those counties. I'm not sure where he landed on any All-Area PD teams. Blue & Gold
I'm sure Alex Sullivan is an excellent player. I'm certain he could run circles around me. But I just don't think we need another guard under 6'. Next season we'll have Ronnie Steward (5'10") and Steve McNees (6'2") at the PG. If Darryl Roberts joins the team there is another PG at 5'11" (and I've got to believe he is going to join the team, otherwise why would he have enrolled at Akron as opposed to just staying home and enrolling at Toledo?) And if Lance Jeter joins the team, there is another guard who is capable of playing PG, and Jeter comes in at 6'3". That would give us:Ronnie Steward - 5'10"Steve McNeese - 6'2"Darryl Roberts - 5'11"Lance Jeter - 6'3"I don't know if we need a guard who is 5'11". I think it looks like we need another shooting guard or two, who come in at at least 6'2".
