ZipDude
I was there and it was a sight that should be remembered for a long time. That kid had no reason to be back in that game and that head coach had no reason to put him back in there. I will always remember him hobbling around on one leg after throwing the ball. Of course the Zips got the bad rap for trying to hurt him which is BS.
Dr Z
Leftwich fractured a bone in his leg his shin during the game, yet came back in the fourth quarter to try to rally the team. This is taken from the article. First off, it doesn't make sense.Secondly, didn't they make a big deal that the Rubber Bowl didn't have an ex-ray machine so he had to get go somewhere else? They determined that it was fractured and let him play? I thought it wasn't fractured that's why they let him back in. What a b*tch.
Z-P
CK, you surely knew this would pull me in for a comment. Lots of memories from that game.........."the pic", the way we gave up throwing and "ate the ball" in the 4th, the "return of the king" as he came in thru the open end of the horseshoe to uproar from their sideline and fans (they probably had 8,000 by themselves in attendance)..............the game saved Lee's job for another year, etc.But the most significant memory was after the game...........we were standing on the rug (on the field) watching Superman get interviewed for radio in the stands, when from our left, Bobby Pruett walks by. Without sneering, I said something like "great game coach Pruett, sorry about Byron's injury" or something like that...............and he stopped, turned around and said "that was a GREAT GAME" "take nothing away from that Akron Team, they were ready to beat us tonight"...........that's a moment I will never forget, and made me a Pruett fan (I know, you guys are now going to kill me) for the rest of my life. BTW, I know I posted this before, so sorry to repeat if you've seen it.
skip-zip
To follow up on one of Z-P's comments, I have actually heard people in the old athletic administration make the comment that "Leftwich's broken leg saved Owens' job". Even though Leftwich was injured, that game gave us a glimmer of hope that maybe (just maybe) we were making some progress against the top level teams in the MAC. Unfortunately, the next year was a return to the "same old, same old".
74ZIP
wase..thanks to coach pruett for putting the injuredd, immobile LEFTY back in the game...i remember fearing that he would pull him and put the back up qb in(which he should have to win the game)...but thankfully did not.. Zipsrifle
What amazed me was that before the game, anyone would have said our D was horrible. After the game, ESPN said something about how Akron's big bad defense was too rough with Byron. I was especially happy, because 2 years earlier Byron brought the Hunkering Terd back to keep us out of the MAC Championship game.
RACER
our defense in this game, and owens whole carrer was terrible.the guy almost beat us hobbling around on one leg.

timmyboy
I was at this game. It was one of my good friends redshirt freshman year and i sat front row with alot of the other students. The best feeling was being able to rush the field after the game and seeing all of them marshall players cry. It was also nice hearing the radio show after another marshall game with the frye to j mont pass, and having people call in an say things like "way to send marshall out of the MAC, with a loss to Akron" .......and the left-wich, our bitch chant also was great after that game. very good night's for both the city, university and football program. fmrzipsOL
I have some very fond memories of Marshall vs Akron, but nothing beats the comeback game when we scored 17 in the final couple minutes to win the game, and the great picture with Crouch standing over Goddard as he layed on his back exhausted, because we were running up and down the field. That was how we sent them out of the MAC! They were the most unclassy players ever, except maybe UCF. Those D-Linemen would do nothing but talk S*$T while they were being pushed back. That was my fondest memory of Marshall. That and the first game of my redshirt freshman year when the first play of the game scott smith got a late hit call. haha too funny. Jumping over the pile and hitting a player so late.
RACER
the comeback game just shows how bad our defense was back then.i think marshall tourned the ball over seven times. c.fyre a great pass, and catch by montgomery to winthe game. still it was a great play by the zips offense at the end of the game. Captain Kangaroo
Disappointed that Sergeant Zip dug up this old post. Now I’ll never be a Supreme Court Judge. 1
