Zips in the NFL

CB Martel Durant to work out for the Steelers. I don't recall any players getting pre-draft attention a few years ago. This is a positive sign.

Since the Zips secondary was better than the Steelers last year, he would be an improvement. I will guess he ends up being a FA signee, but who knows with Colbert, he may draft him in the 3rd round. SwagginUA.

Draft prospect podcast (Martel Durant).

Notes: Feels the game slowed down for him senior year. Zips position coach told him he will be a steal in the draft. Likes to tackle. Feels he is a leader and a team player, feels the Zips coaches recognized that when they moved him to safety (team player). Wants to go back to CB because he has jumping ability.

As far as I remember, Martel wasn't even a starter for the Zips. However, if he gets drafted or even signed, then props to him. With Ike and Troy retiring, they need all the help they can get. As much as I hate Pitt, I feel if they shored up their CB positions, they would have been much better in previous years. I don't understand the neglect.

No word on him or D'Orazio

I'm surprised Zach didn't get an invite from the Browns after his workout. I was hoping he would get a shot with them since their depth is questionable at that particular position.

Browns rookie WR to have surgery. Make the call.

The Zips own Shawn Lemon ready to prove his worth in the NFL.

"If you ever want to get into the NFL, play football somewhere,'' Lemon said. "Go to Canada, an indoor league, anywhere professionally to work on your game. Someone will notice you and hopefully take a chance on you. An opportunity is all you need. Then, it's up to you to do something with it.''

Notes: One of the 17 rookies in camp on a tryout basis, defensive back Mario Rowson (6-3, 210) from Delaware, was injured Friday to end his opportunity. ... Former Akron defensive back Martel Durant replaced Rowson on the rookie roster. He got the call Friday night and drove to Pittsburgh for Saturday's practice.

Lemon Still Keeping his CFL roots.

Lemon Tries to Squeeze onto Steelers Roster.

Most of the players who took part in Steelers rookie minicamp over the weekend were in college last fall. A few others were on NFL practice squads last season and were allowed to participate because they didn’t play in an NFL game. Then there was Shawn Lemon, the oldest prospect at the camp who is playing for his eighth pro franchise. Lemon, 26, is hardly a rookie, but the well-traveled outside linebacker was allowed to participate because he is with an NFL team for the first time in his career. Lemon has played in just about every pro football league in North America since graduating from Akron in 2011. Undrafted and unsigned by an NFL team out of college, he spent the past three seasons bouncing around the Canadian Football League, the Arena Football League and the Indoor Football League.

DK suggests that Lemon has a chance to crack roster since he plays on the left side, and Bud would seem to be his competition

Bud Dupree, freshly signed to a four-year contract yesterday, won’t have a job handed to him in Latrobe. That’s not just a line, either. He’s got to show a real push, a real pursuit, probably in the earliest days, in order to be considered as a starting linebacker right away. But know that, based on what I heard during rookie camp, that’s what the Steelers hope.

For one, Jarvis Jones‘ presumed backups — and presumed is there for a reason — would be James Harrison and Arthur Moats, both of whom have spent their careers rushing from the right side. That might sound like an academic difference, but it isn’t. Jason Worilds used to detail for me all the nuances involved in switching from one side to the other, and it didn’t sound easy at all. Or even doable, depending on a player’s dominant hand.
For another, the next man down on the left side would be Shawn Lemon, who had 13 sacks and eight forced fumbles last season … for Calgary of the CFL. That’s not bad football, but it isn’t great. (I could point out that Tino Sunseri started at QB for Saskatchewan down the stretch drive, but that might come across as mean.)
Lemon has visible talent …
