Zips RPI now at 77

Class of 82

Recommended Posts

Wins against Miami and Ohio, along with Temple beating ranked Xavier, have plunged Akron's RPI from somewhere in the 120s down to 77.Can't State is 35. Miami is somehow hanging in at 47. Ohio is 54.The MAC West RPI are as dismal as their records. Toledo is lowest at 164. Ball State is alleged to be the 283rd best team in the country. Over the course of the rest of the season, this is way bad for the Zips. Even just one or two losses to teams with such huge RPIs will be crushing, RPI-wise.Here are current MAC Standings and RPIs. Worst RPI in America? At 341, it's Eastern Illinois, which is 1-16. Somehow, they were able to knock off Murray State in overtime.

What site is the rpi coming from? I'm just wondering because Sagarin has Akron at 66, Miami (OH) 76, OU 75 and Can't State 51. Only reason I question it is Miami being that high is a little over-rated along with OU. Can't can't be that good. I think we're right in the 70-60 range right now.
Sagarin is not the same as the RPI. Sagarin is more accurate because he includes the margin of victory.

RPIs are from here: http://www.kenpom.com/rpi.phpFor better or worse, my understanding is that RPI is the rating given the most credence by the NCAA selection committee. An explanation of RPI and the formula it uses can be found here: http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/rpi_help/

Ouch, I see the game at Western as being a potential killer for our RPI :wall: They are a much better team than an RPI of 195 would indicate.

Herein lies part of our problem. It would appear that the RPI is more highly regarded than the Sagarin. I personally like to look more at the Sagarin since it accounts for margin of victory. Thus, we get a little bit of "extra credit" when we play one of those 200+ ranked teams, but beat them by a wide margin. In the RPI, it simply counts as a win against a team ranked 200+, which helps us very little. Zips fan is right. We're already essentially eliminated from any consideration for post season play unless we win the overall MAC regular season title (and get an NIT bid), or win the MAC tournament (and get an NCAA bid).Every other option is almost surely off the table, even this early in the season, because our strength of schedule stinks.

If the zips have a similar season as last year and dont win the mac tourney, i would virtually guarantee an NIT bid because of the snub press from last year. Nearly every sports outlet covered the zips' snub, and if by chance we were eliminated in the finals again, that talk would start right back up. But how 'bout we just win the tourney and be done with it? :D

K-Roo Said:Realtime RPI has Akron at 69http://www.realtimerpi.com/rpi_midam_Men.htmlOhio 39Can't 44Miami 53Akron 69Guess all we needed to do was get blown out by a top ten program iand we be in the 40's????Somehow I can't get too excited or pay too much attention to polls, surveys, or whatever they are that two teams that Akron has beaten (one handily) ahead of the Zips. I would like to repeat that the game is played on the court, not in the newspapers or the fantasies of some so called "expert".
