Blue & Gold
Ramel Mitchell (Firestone) and Johnnie Davis (Timken) were both named 1st Team All-Ohio D-1. Ramel is a 5-10 PG and Davis is a 6-2 SG. Does anyone know much about either of these players? I know Ramel has been a standout players since his sophomore year. Up until this year I hadn't heard as much about Davis; maybe a late bloomer? Does anyone know whether KD is going to offer them the opportunity to walk on? We've got a lot of Ohio players, which I like, but both these guys are from the immediate area! I'm hoping KD acknowledges them somehow.B.t.w., Alex Sullivan was named 2nd Team D-1 All-Ohio. He continued to put up amazing numbers in spite of the fact that he was playing on a team where he was often the first, second and third option. CraftyMFer
Johnny Davis is a Big-Time Athlete. He got kicked off the Team at McKinkey last year and transferred to Timken where he has had a great year on the court and seems to have his attitude in check. I talked to an Akron Assistant coach during the first week of the high school season and he said they wouldnt take a chance on him. That was the first week of the season. Things may have changed. I hate to let him go to another MAC school though, bc if he keeps his head on straight, this kid could be great. Very similar to Keith McCleod. McCleod was a head case at McKinley and at BGSU and ended up doing pretty well for himself. I doubt Keith will take a chance on him. Personally I think he will be better than McCleod. Blue & Gold
I didn't know McCleod was a head case at McKinley. I know Akron offered McCleod but he chose BGSU because we already had Jimmal Ball and Jamie Bosley at our guard spots. Unfortunately for us, McLeod ended up being better than either Ball or Bosley! Agh! Figures.

I think everybody had problems with Dakich. When Dakich realized how good he was, he layed off of him.

He is a pretty soft spoken guy and maybe took awhile to adjust a BG, but no head case.
Blue & Gold
Rivals.com has absolutely nothing on Johnnie Davis. I couldn't find anything about Davis on Scout.com either. Is he a late-bloomer? Are his grades so poor that he's not considering college? Is he getting looked at by anyone? I'd think that I would have been able to at least find his name mentioned on one of those two sites.

The Zips seem to be loading up on guards, but if they don't end up with big Zeke from Pennsylvania they really need to start looking at some big men. Check that....big men (6'10" +) that can move well. I don't care what size school they come from (more likely to find a steal in the mid- to small high schools) as long as they can shoot from point blank range, rebound, play defense, and just get in the other team's way. He was a heralded big man recruit last season and redshirted this year. He's between 6-9 and 6-10 and probably weighs around 250. He doesn't look like someone who's gonna run the floor extremely well on the fast break, but he is very big w/ long arms and big hands and he really could both rebound and score in high school. I think we're really gonna need a good season from him NEXT year to be competitive.
Blue & Gold
Here's an article from today's ABJ (3/20). Malone College hosted last night's Summit vs. Stark County all-star game. Summit defeated Stark by a count of 108 - 101. But once again, Johnie Davis sounds like a hidden talent just begging to be asked to walk-on to the Zips' squad! Here's the quote about Johnie from the article:"Stark County was led by Johnie Davis of Timken, who was named the Stark MVP with a game-high 29 points and a handful of highlight dunks."We could have used an athlete like that in our backcourt THIS season! Give him a chance KD!!!http://www.ohio.com/sports/16844021.html?page=all&c=yThe article talks about the girl's game first, so you'll have to scroll 1/2 way down to see the boy's story. Hard to imagine a D1 first teamer not getting some looks for NCAA D1 scholies .. even low major. Not sure that walking on here is the best thing for him. Lots of talent in the backcourt .. on scholie. Lots of talent in the backcourt .. on scholie.I've heard that he had some discipline issues last season - and may have been kicked off the McKinley team, thus the transfer to Timken. So, not knowing what the discipline issues were, they may have been rather severe for him not to have any offers on the table. The reason I'm following Johnie Davis' recruiting (or lack thereof?) is that he's a 6-2 shooting guard. I'm really excited about the guys we're gonna have in the backcourt over the next few years, but they may be a little on the short side: Humpty @ 5-9, Sullivan @ 5-11, Roberts @ 5-11 and Steward @ 5-10. We're gonna have McNees @ 6-2 and Rydell Brooks (walk-on) @ 6-2, but I'm just thinking maybe we could really use another D-1 All-Ohio 6-2 SG, especially if we could happen to bring him into the fold as a mere walk-on w/ the potential of a future scholly? Do you think he'll do the same w/ McClanahan? It's hard to image McClanahan being as naturally athletic as Jimmy is.We also have another walk-on named Eric Coblentz who was 2nd Team All-Ohio D-II last year (from Lake High School). He's 6-2 as well. Maybe 6-3. But I'm not sure he's quite athletic enough to get a lot of minutes at this level though. But he can really shoot the ball. Blue & Gold
Here's a very nice story on Johnie Davis of Canton Timken. He was named the Repository's P.O.Y. Johnie was named 1st Team All-Ohio D-1. The story says he lacks the qualifying grades to play D-1 college ball but that he's working on them. http://cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=405030&a...ubCategoryID=29The story also features two nice little youtube videos of Johnie's highlights. One is an interview where Johnie says his favorite person in history is LeBron James. Ha. We should definitely invite Johnie to walk on! Heck, he could play against LeBron this summer if he comes here!
akronad
Ramel Mitchell from Firestone, will be going to Can't as a preferred walk-on. KD never even took a look at the kid.
Blue & Gold
THAT SUCKS!!! I know we don't need another sub-six-foot guard, but man, I am absolutely going to HATE seeing a player from AKRON 'STONE lacing them up for Can't State! That blows. Captain Kangaroo
I thought Jimmy Conyers was going to play SG for us, but KD seems to like to play him at the 3-spot.By "3-spot," do you mean the spot on the bench three seats away from from the Gatorade cooler? Conyers needs to work on his game BIG-TIME this summer if he's going to get into the 2008-9 rotation. I hope he doesn't waste his talent and athleticism...it would be a shame.
