Egner vs. Henniger

I have a special interest in Egner at UA vs. Henniger at Can't because I attended several Jackson HS games to do some amateur scouting of the two.

My final HS scouting report was that Egner was the right player of the two for UA to recruit for his athleticism and defensive game, and that Henniger, the son of a minister, would probably help raise the player character level at Can't. ;)

So far neither player has set the world on fire. It's interesting to compare their limited stats on StatSheet.com and see where they are today. Henniger, the offensive force at Jackson HS, has the edge on offensive stats, while Egner, the defensive force at Jackson HS, is leading those categories in college.

Lots of time left for these two players to establish themselves in their respective programs. But here's where they stand right now:

I never saw these guys play in high school myself. But, when I learned that they were choosing Ken+ and Akron, I asked some old high school coaching friends for their opinions about him. And I posted that information here.

It was the consensus at the time that Henninger was the better basketball player. And although I wished that we could have beaten Ken+ for the "better player", I actually was very comforted when I learned about Egner's particular skill set, because I felt he would fit well into our system.

And at this point, I don't see Henninger doing anything yet that convinces me that we really missed out on anything.

I don't care what he did in high school, Egner needs to get stronger as a Zip. He was thrown around in the paint like a rag doll in WV after Zeke got in foul trouble. I remember Henniger looking like he had two left feet in the Mac Tourney last year.

My junior year in high school, I got to see them up close. They played at my alma mater(West Branch) in 07-08 season, and we should of won that game against Jackson. But that's a topic on high school forum, not here...

Egner was the one that stood out to me there. At that time, there was rumors that Duke was looking at one, and UNC was looking at the other... Apparently they didn't get the performance UNC and Duke were looking for to improve over their high school career...

I'm hoping they(Egner more obviously) do finish out their college careers like their high school careers where they just had opportunities and executed well...

I watched Egner play a last few games and was hoping that the local kid would get some meaningful minutes. On Saturday night I watched him play for 13 minutes and not have any rebounds and had 4 fouls. I also observed him getting pushed around on the boards. Tonight I saw him make a stupid goaltending when the ball was clearly on the way down. He seems to be pressing on offense and has missed several shots around the basket.

He needs to learn that on this team he is going to have to earn minutes by playing tenacious defense, boxing out and rebounding. I don't see him being strong enough to do that right now. I would love to see him succeed but he is going to have to play stronger and play with more tenacity if he is going to see any meaningful minutes. He certainly hasn't helped himself the past few games.

He is 6'7" and 215 lbs. He is backing up Zeke...so he will always be overmatched physically. His game is defense...he is not an accomplished offensive player...maybe never will be. But he needs to play 5 minutes or so every game to get more experiance as he will be needed next year in a big way. Hopefully he adds 10 or more lbs and improves over the summer. Next year he will back up Zeke and Tree and probably be playing 15-20 minutes a game.

Had Nik not come back for his senior year, we would have been forced to play Josh for extended periods of time especially with Tree being a big question mark early in the year. Now that Nik is back and Tree is beasting (if he can stay out of trouble), Josh's minutes are being very limited. He is however still needed to give Zeke a breather, even with his limited offense, he remains a big athletic body who can run like a deer.

He is starting to look more and more like Bardo, who was something of a waste until the back of his senior year. Then he came alive and did us solid.

Bardo was not athletic. Egner is.

He is not looking that athletic. That is the problem.

Have you ever seen him play in person? He can jump out of the gym. He is playing out of position(Backup Center). He actually has some really nice offensive moves around the basket. Most of the shots he has taken this season have been in garbage time at the end of games.

Egner's height and weight translate to SF in DI. But Q and Harney have this position covered.

Egner's high vertical leap gives him the ability to play PF. But the Serb and Tree have this position covered.

Playing Egner at C is a big stretch. But with Bardo gone, someone needs to provide backup for Zeke.

Egner is a team player who's willing to take on any role his coach wants. He was a late bloomer in HS and it looks as if he's going to be a late bloomer in college.

The one thing to never lose sight of is that Egner has a 37-inch maximum (with step) vertical leap. To put that in perspective, here are the averages of all NBA players who've been measured:

NBA Player Average Maximum Vertical Leap By Player Position

PG: 34.9

SG: 35

SF: 34.5

PF: 32.8

C: 30.7

NBA Player Average No Step Vertical Leap By Player Position

PG: 29.4

SG: 29.7

SF: 29.7

PF: 28.5

C: 26.8

To be honest...my biggest fear is that Egner will lose interest sitting on the bench. We have a very small group of front court players and cannot afford to lose someone with Egners potential. He is a team player and has played the role of defensive stopper his whole career. Next year we will have Zeke, a more mature Tree and maybe Harney who can play "big". We NEED Egner to step up and reach his potential as all the others will need the ball and look to score. If Egner can play above his height and assume the defensive stopper role, we will be a really strong team. If he loses interest...I fear he may transfer to a smaller school to start. I can picture he an Henniger regrouping at Walsh or another school and being the stars. We need Egner to grow and polish his game. He can be a valuable force inside for the Zips if he does.
