skip-zip Posted November 25, 2012 Report Share Posted November 25, 2012 I'm curious about how my fellow participants on this board feel about this, since I've been talking about this with numerous people since yesterday, and have listened to various sportcasters, local and national, weigh in on this. Do you think the school would have thought twice if they knew the ex-players were going to parade JT around on their shoulders like that? Does the school even care what anyone thinks? Don't you think the right thing for him to do would have been to gratiously decline? At the very least, was it too soon? Is it yet another case of OSWho arrogance? Thumbing their noses at the people who sanctioned him and the University, as some sportscasters have suggested? How about the fans who cheered for him? I even read an on-line article comment this morning that said something like..."if it weren't for what Tressel did, we wouldn't have Urban Meyer right now. So, this all worked out great." Have we really reached such a low point in terms of integrity in college athletics? Does any integrity still exist at all, especially for the University down South that's only won one football title since the 60s, even though they spend more money per athlete than any other school trying to win championships? To me, the timing was very bizarre. And since I always tend to think about the student athletes first, I have to wonder how the hard-working kids on the field felt about watching a man being paraded around the field, knowing that he was the primary reason why their season was ending yesterday. Don't you think the right thing for him to do would have been to gratiously decline?Should have declined. Since he has no concept of right and wrong, the idea never entered his mind. At the very least, was it too soon?No. A ten year reunion is acceptable for the players who played ten years ago. Should have done it at another game. They have figured out how to break the rules with minimum damage. Their administration is actually very smart in this manner and will one day, if they aren't already, serve as a model for other member institutions on how to break rules and get away with it with little damage. How about the fans who cheered for him? OSU fans are blinded by booze, stupidity and more booze. They have no idea how ironic it is that they watched a team that went undefeated, couldn't participate in the Big Ten Championship or the BCS Championship because of the actions of Tressel. One of the great seasons in college football, against a horrible schedule, all for nothing and they are too drunk and stupid to understand. Just trying to see how many people are aware of this debacle, and how they feel about it. When I said "too soon", I meant too soon to bring back JT, not too soon to celebrate their anniversary. Not sure if you live out of town, but the city is dominated with OSUcks fans. There's probably more OSU fans in this city than there are Akron fans. 90% of those fans never went to OSU and probably 20-30% of them went to Akron. There are so many Akron alum that root for OSU every week during football season and don't give a thought to the Akron football team. Hardcore Akron fans hate seeing this. Another hardcore requirement is to become familiar with Akron's teams. You might not like this, but Akron plays OSU several times during the year in different sports. Pittsburgh fans dislike Penn State. Louisville fans dislike Kentucky. Memphis fans dislike Tennessee. Etc... It amazes me that we still have to explain this to the casuals. And let me add, we've played them in football 3 times in the last decade, so you could easily classify the football games as being more frequent than just "every now and then". You're right that we'd play them in basketball too, if only they'd schedule us. That's been that way for years. It's too much of a risk for them, so they avoid us. And don't forget about competing against them for media attention, students, and faculty, and scholastic achievement. The people in Cincinnati have it right.
