Do you like our current uniforms?
zippyrifle32 replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
again, we're free to discuss it and give our opinions even if it isn't coming back. -
there were times that we really got going, but down the stretch it was really hard with all the time outs being called. plus (and maybe it's me) the game didn't feel like there was any rythm in it. it's like we'd get something started, then the refs would call soemthing stupid and it'd die. how many offensive fouls did they call? it was a wierd game...

Do you like our current uniforms?

i have a hard time memorizing who is what number when it comes to football...mainly because of the number of people on the team. i like the nameplates on the back because i get sick of saying "who was that" looking it up on the paper, and missing the next play of the game. i'm sure there are good reasons not to do it, but it is convient for the fans. -
i don't know, but they were in. oh and quickzips, they still handed out the chicken coupons. i got one!
-
we were up by quite a bit, and most of their guys were in foul trouble (inlcuding the 2 or 3 that fouled out) so they put in the bench. after that i must say we didn't play that well at all. we began to hack and turn the ball over. i'm a little disappointed to see that, but many good things happened as well tonight. i think the highlight of the game for me was preston's put-back dunk. it was like this long arm that came out of nowhere and just pounded the ball into the bucket. it was awesome! and ced played a great game (against his brother )

Losing big leads does not bode well for the Zips!
zippyrifle32 replied to ZipAnalyst's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
i kinda agree with zipsanalysis on this. it not complaining that we don't win "well enough." it's the distrubing thought that we lose mental focus during a game and let a team score 15 points. while we end up winning in the end, this is an issue that has to be corrected before we go to the ncaa tourney. every team that goes there is good, and that little lax can easily cost us a game in the future. in the ncaa tourney that game ends our season. i'm pretty sure we can win out and even take the mac tourney, but we need to be ready for everything when we get to the big dance. -
 i can't wait till we steam roll them in their own house

that's my biggest problem...

i would love to go, and for once this is a game that doesn't conflict with anything in my schedule! however, i don't know how i would get there (no car) and i don't even know how to get to bgsu (not from ohio). maybe i can google it and get some of my teammates to go...

ok sloopy then what is your defination of a sport? we have to train physically to be the best like every other sport. we have be mentally tough like you would if you were shooting a free throw with the ncaa tourney on the line. so i guess you calling it not a sport means we have different definitions, but that's ok. like zipsrifle said, unless you came down to see what we do and how we do it then you might not get it. our next match is this weekend in shrank south room 7 against penn state. oh yeah, i think most people are surprised to find out that a lot of rifle teams are all women. that's because it's a cheap team for a university to have to help balance out the title 9 scholarship stuff.zipsrifle - i think you already know this, but they recently changed our course of fire to 60 shots smallbore and 60 shots air. they did that to help cut time and because with the other format if you won smallbore, it really didn't matter if you won air because you would be so many points ahead. plus this year it's an aggregate score that they look at, so you have to be good in both guns.

what do you mean? rifle shooting is a very old sport and was a part of the original modern olympics. there is a lot more to it than most people think. often times people think we just point our guns and pull the trigger, while that is true in part, there is a lot more to it physically and mentally. while most sports needs its athletes to be exert as much physical energy (like running and agility), rifle is a sport of trying to control and inhibit the body's natural movements (such as pulse) and be consistant enough to do so to shoot a ten everytime. like most sports, to preform at the top level your body has to be physically conditioned, but the difference is that during actual competition we are not trying to move them to out manuver our opponent. people don't realize how much strength it takes to hold a rifle steady, not to mention holding one steady for 60 or even 120 shots. when you're shooting standing you have an stand to rest your gun on between shots, but for everyshot you must lift a 13lb rifle then hold it for 30-40 seconds (depending on the person), and be able to be steady enough to take out the dot of an i at 50 feet. you can also notice in the picture that we wear some funky looking outfits. made usually out of thick stiff canvas, the outfits help with some stability, dampens pulse, and gives back support in standing. while rifle is one of the safest sports (very few sport related injuries) the back support is necessary because of the back bend in standing that is used to compensate for the weight of the rifle.then there is the mental aspect of shooting. while the top shooters are physically fit, flexible enough for their positions, and have a high control over pulse and breathing (most olympic shooters can actually slow their pulse down enough to take a shot between heart beats) most of the sport lies within the head of the athlete. you must be able to stay calm and relaxed if a bad shot occurs, and not be distracted while you are shooting. that may sound easy, but to stay at a high focus level for 30-40 minutes while you're in position is tough. it takes a lot of practice and training. then there is the pressure in big matches, like the ncaa championships. shooting is one of the toughest mental sports and is very similar to golf or pitching in softball and baseball. i hope this answered some of your questions, and if you're ever free for one of our matches you should come down and see us.

i like the jerseys we have. if we were to get new ones, then we shouldn't go back in time and grab something out of the closet. -
i can understand doing something like this one game, but why 6? what's the point of getting new uni's if all we do is replicate the old ones. sorry, but i don't like it.

i honestly don't know if there was foul play involved, but there are several reasons dambrot didn't release him. one that i havent' seen out here yet is the new ncaa rules that really make people think twice before transferring. i'm talking about the whole new team grading system which could cut scholarship money for the team. some of the factors include things like grades and graduation rates, but it also includes how many people transfer on and off the team. by bubba leaving our team could potentially be penalized. i know of a few other cases outside of akron that the schools wouldn't release their athlete because it would deter the athlete from leaving thus keep that team from being penalized. just a thought...

BJ reports Walther won't get release from Dambrot
zippyrifle32 replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
yeah mike, go ahead and use my name cause that big picture of me in my siggy didn't give it away :rolleyes:since you guys want to keep going off topic i guees i'll just join you. you always seemed to make the mistake that i just wanted rifle posted. i don't give a shit about some front page article on us. whatever. what i have been saying is that in the sports brief section (the little paragraphs that sum up ua athletics) should have results for every athletic event. and while basketball and football are the big two (although soccer has finally gain the respect they deserved), akron has 14 different sports and it would be nice to see something on everyone at least once including the smaller sports such as golf or tennis. you've already made it clear that you don't want to cover that. please...in that column you "ripped" me up in, it definately showed with the line "Rifle ranks up there with billiards and bowling as far as athleticism is concerned." i admit that i don't know much about billiards or bowling except perhaps we share a similar mental game. i also like how you tie my personal opinions to me representing athletics, yet anything that you say you proudly point to the disclaimer on the editorial section. pathetic.me obsessive? i just don't like settling for mediocracy in any form, but i've stopped expecting greatness from the buchtelite a while ago... -

BJ reports Walther won't get release from Dambrot
zippyrifle32 replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
hardley, i'm the same person on that team that said it wasn't right to ignore the number one soccer team in the country. funny enough, after i did a little complaining everything i complained about changed . besides your column showed how little you actually knew about my sport , but that's ok most people don't. oh and dan, the buchtelite is a great way to get a campfire started anyways back to the topic of this forum... i think we're better off without him even if he goes to a division rival because if he doesn't want to be here we don't need someone bringing down our team. our guys have the chance of a lifetime. i really think they could take the mac title and go to the ncaa's. if bubba was forced to stay his attitude could negatively affect his teammates. look at the nba and all the ego that coaches and teams have to put up with. i know bubba and i'm not saying he's like that, but why take the chance. now with so many people talking about this supposed ncaa violation, it should be investigated and ohio should be cited if found guilty. but if it was just in your "newspaper" i'd ignore the whole thing. -

i wouldn't believe anything this guy says. i've actually heard that he was released then i heard that he wasn't. still, to be using the buctelite or anything that was written by a buchtelite staffer as a source of information is a real bad idea. hixenbaugh can spin a story six ways to sunday and some of the stuff written in the paper are nothing but flat out lies. anyways, i think we should let walther go. by the time he can play for the he'll probably be ineligible because of grades. -
Suddenly, the BJ wants to cover Akron....
zippyrifle32 replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
i completely agree with you hilltopper. i personally don't think that a local paper's circulation would go down if it covered local events...hmmmm...i actually thought that's why people bought the dang things. :macc: -
Ken Lolla accepts job at Louisville
zippyrifle32 replied to Johnny Utah's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
an sick as i am about him leaving, maybe he wanted the challenge of building a team from scratch. maybe it is more than money and fame. it would say a lot of his coaching abilities to bring a team like louisville up to where we were. i'm still on the same page as most people though...sick about it! -
well good luck to him getting everything straightened out. i'll say it again, the academic advisors they have here suck and have messed up on a lot of people's eligibility.
-
i see that we don't have any top rebounders...i think that's one of our biggest weaknesses. we need our guys to be more aggressive and go after the ball. sorry if you disagree, but that's just my pet peeve.

Zipsrifle - do you have any extra zips stuff
zippyrifle32 replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
i was just down at the jar (where they were once again sold out of the "fear the roo" shirts) and i was talking to the girl that worked there and an alumn during a short lull. the girl said that after the sucess of the t-shirts they were looking into other things like magnets, stickers, buttons. now i don't know how fast this "looking into it" is going to take, but i'm sure if you call up the store and continue to ask they might start producing more of it. supply the demand! -
Are you going to Detroit on the 26th for the MCB?
