Where does the axe fall next?
kreed5120 replied to Lee Adams's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
We currently have 7 men's sports, 10 women's sports, and 1 co-ed (rifle). They could cut rifle and men's golf or they could keep rifle and cut both men's and women's golf. -

You can cut men's golf, but keep women's golf. That's what CMU does. -
Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time
kreed5120 replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Duquesne was the only Pittsburgh team that I didn't hate. Namely because I felt pity for how terrible they've been. They've since been added to the list. -
It's pretty bad we have to rely on sketchy twitter handles, other teams message boards, and 1 ZN.o poster for our coaching updates. It would be nice if the local media at least made an effort to make it at least appear they were trying to cover the coaching search.

Where does the axe fall next?

It's set by NCAA. FBS D1 schools have to sponsor 16 sports. Non FBS schools only have to sponsor 14. -
New arena funding strategy: We're going to give @NWAkron money to play the lottery with numbers he picks.
-
We are at 18 sports currently. If we were to cut sports to get down to 16, it would most likely be men and women's golf or men's golf and co-ed rifle.
-
I agree 100%. It's not like he bit off more than he can chew by going to a highly competitive league then got ran out of town for failing to meet lofty expectations. He went 19-43 in the MVC.

Akron currently sponsors 18 sports with the minimum requirement being 16. With now only 4 MAC teams sponsoring soccer I'd say that would be the easy pick except for the fact that's the sport we excel at. Title 9 would make it challenging to cut women's sports. I'd say if we were to cut more sports it would be rifle and/or men's golf. -
Virginia passed legislation that limited how much schools are allowed to subsidize their athletic programs. Some other states have already passed similar type of legislation or are in discussion about passing similar type of legislation. With how big of a political issue the rapid raising costs of college has caused, I feel it's only a matter of time before we see something similar in Ohio. http://pilotonline.com/sports/mcauliffe-signs-bill-that-limits-athletic-student-fees/article_337e7bec-d46e-5e15-bba6-6fc8de3a5f01.html

Yeah, Groce went 37-53 in B1G play making only 1 tourney in his 5 years. He's certainly either going to have to be an assistant somewhere or take a head coach job at a mid-major for a few years before he earns another opportunity making $1M+ at some big name program.
-
UCSB job has already been filled. http://www.azdesertswarm.com/basketball/2017/3/30/15120176/arizona-basketball-joe-pasternack-leaving-wildcats-to-be-head-coach-at-uc-santa-barbara-recruiting

I was just typing this exact thing.
-
I'm kind of torn on Groce. He went 34-30 in the MAC regular season, but somehow still managed to win 3 NCAAT games. He then goes to Illinois and makes 1 NCAAT appearance in 5 years in a conference that routinely receives 5-8 bids. Given his underwhelming performance at Illinois, he might need to go to someplace like Akron for 2-3 years to prove himself before he gets another chance at one of those larger schools.
-
So outside of Georgetown we appear to be the best opening still available.
-
I get it you feel he is a poor recruiter, I don't. Lets agree to disagree and move on.
-
Does anyone have a listing of what jobs still remain open?
-
I'm not sure if you remember the backlash that cutting the baseball program caused, but dropping the football team to FCS would be that x1000. One could argue whether it is the right thing to do financially or not, but at the end of the day the administration that tries to do it can kiss their jobs goodbye.

I don't know the back stories on all these guys. Just that they were highly touted coming out of high school. I'm not sure who recruited every single player that came in and out of OSU nor do I really care. I don't have this magical map that you somehow apparently do that shows who was assigned to what state. So you're saying it is just a coincidence they quit landing these guys after Boals left? Good to know. Edit: As Z-Pouch stated I'll just agree to disagree.
-
It actually appears it was 4 guys who transferred out of that 5 guy class. The one I missed initially was Mickey Mitchell. All were top 120 players coming out of high school. Daniel Giddens transferred to Alabama Austin Grandstaff transferred to Oklahoma A.J. Harris transferred to New Mexico State Mickey Mitchell transferred to UCSB http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Season/2015-Basketball/Commits Edit: As I stated before Boals signed a 4 year $1.875M (469k/year) contract at Stony Brook and I honestly don't see us paying him, or anyone for that matter, $600k starting out which is probably what it would take to get him here.
-
I'm not sure if you are aware, but when you transfer you have to sit out a year.
-
And some of the best guys he recruited are no longer on the team because they transferred to other P5 programs and in the case of a guys like D'Angelo Russell they left early to play in the NBA.
-
IDK what your problem is. You are the one that stated their problem was recruiting and claimed it started under Boals. I stated they recruited great under Boals and backed it up with facts (them having 4 top 10 recruiting classes). They had a terrific recruiting class in 2015, however, 60% of that class transferred. I don't know the story of why nor do I really care. Their 2016 class was underwhelming and their 2017 class appears to be shaping up to be equally as bad. OSU program has obviously been regressing over the last 2 years by missing the tournament and I never stated otherwise. I don't see how me disputing a balatant alternative fact on your part is me defending OSU. Their program is going downhill and based off their incoming class it doesn't appear to be turning itself around anytime soon.
