Had recruiters known Big Dog would turn out the way he did, he would have had 100 offers coming out of high school.

This makes me a little more uneasy, but its not like there are a surplus of 400lb players floating around. -

But then you risk him landing on you... -
Mark Few has won more NCAAT games than all these guys combined so if anything his comment was an understatement. There are 30, maybe 50 Senderoff, Coleman, Hipsher, Hurley, Witherspoons, Christian, etc. of the world for every Mark Few or George Marshall. I'd have no problem getting rid of a guy to escape mediocrity. I wouldn't label Akron as mediocre, at least not compared to our peers, as we are consistently at or near the top of the conference.

PD Article on UA Sports Spending

The problem extends well beyond athletics. Universities try outspending one another to attract the same pool of students then pass that cost off to the students. It's why tuition rates have been rising as rapidly as they have been over the past decades. My cousin studied abroad in Germany for a semester and the university he attended was a converted WW2 military camp. It didn't have a 350,000 sq ft recreation center, a $60 million football facility, nor even luxury dorm apartments. It's how they keep costs down. If universities (not just Akron) focused more on trying to provide the best education possibly and focused less on the bells and whistles, today's youth would be receiving a better education and the student debt problem would be well on its way of self correcting itself. -
You guys do realize that it is exponentially more likely that the next Akron coach will bring the program back to its historical mean (middle of the road to conference bottom feeder) than it is that they would turn Akron into the next Gonzaga or Wichita State, right?

Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)
kreed5120 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Yeah, I wouldn't even say UTA and Illinois State have 'made it'. Both are having good seasons, but UTA hasn't made the NCAAT since 2008 and Illinois State 1998. A better example of a school working to become the next VCU or Gonzaga would be MTSU or Valpo. -
It was a decent listen. Nice hearing a sports talk show talk something other than who the Browns next QB will be and what they need to spend to get him. Was going to write a lengthier post, but I'd just be rehashing things that have been previously said in any of the other dozens of threads. The city and university are both broke. Regardless of how great Dambrot is and how deserving he is of coaching someplace nice, there just is no money to go around.

Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)

It should be noted that Syracuse played 10 out of 13 of their OOC games at the Carrier Dome and only left the state of New York for 1 OOC game. That game was against Wisconsin and wasn't even a game they scheduled. They were contractually obligated to play it as part of the B1G/ACC Challenge. Syracuse is the poster boys of trying to maximize their systematic advantage. Why do you think Boeheim was lobbying so hard to keep the ACC Tournament out of North Carolina?...It provides UNC, Duke, and NC State the advantage. -

I never said we were shooting for H&H with Duke, Kentucky, etc. What I said is many of those programs turn us down every year or not even return our calls when we are willing to just take their ~$90k check and play at their place. I agree quality mid-majors scheduling quality mid-majors needs to become more of an occurrence. I have no idea why it isn't a more common practice not just at Akron, but everywhere else. -

The 1 seeds are determined by the NCAAT selection committee. Seeds 2-8 are done by the NIT selection committee. -

I agree with this statement. The numbers don't even seem consistent. Why does a rifle scholarship cost ~$79k Men's teams (7): A total of 124.36 scholarships were split among 198 student-athletes, costing $4,067,092. $4,067,092/124.36 = 32,704 Women's teams (10):A total of 94.8 scholarships were split among 162 student-athletes, costing $2,897,342. $2,897,342/94.8 = 30,563 Mixed team of men and women (1): Rifle. A total of 3.6 scholarships split among 12 student-athletes, costing $283,741 $283,741/3.6 = $78,817 In State Out of State Cost of Attendance $27,002 $35,534 https://www.uakron.edu/finaid/cost-of-attendance/ -

I'm not sure what exactly happened that made Hughes completely fall out of the rotation after returning from his injury, but I feel he will need to make huge strides if we are to contend next year. -

Like Zippyfan and Dr.Z said we ran into a quality UTA team that based off their performance against BYU and us, appears to be peaking. We came out playing sloppy and were chasing points the entire night instead of just settling in. On offense UTA did a tremendous job of moving the ball around selflessly to make that extra pass turning what would have been good shots into great shots. On defense they had the perfect game plan and personnel needed to nuetralize Big Dog. They managed to send double and even at times triple team help while still rotating fast enough to cover whoever he dished it off to. They exposed our weaknesses. We look lost offensively when Big Dog isn't able to create others shots and our guards don't have the lateral quickness to keep their man in front of them. -

Dambrot has called out specific coaches by name, like he did when he said he talked to UM coach face to face. If you don't think there was little truth in it, wouldn't those coaches refute it? It's also not like Akron is the only up and coming mid-major that has voiced those concerns. I suppose all those coaches are lying and just trying to protect themselves... -

If the answer was that simple we'd have the best football team in the MAC. -

We certainly need bigger, faster, stronger players. I don't know how we can get them, but we won't take the next step without them.
