Penn State favored by 28; o/u 58.5
ZippyTuba11 replied to Class of 82's topic in Akron Zips Football
You know it. I'm not much of a B-11 fan, but if I were to support a team from that conference, it would be PSU. Maybe it's because JoePa is so old he just doesn't care anymore, but he seems to be the only major coach supporting a playoff system. -
Maybe the Rubber Bowl process had us spoiled a bit, but truly, this is a stupid idea. I sincerely hope they come up with something better for the next game, because I've not met one student who looked at this band positively.

Scorchers would have been a great place if we were still at the Rubber Bowl, but with the new stadium, I have no desire to go to that part of Akron. I would be really disappointed if the party isn't at OBC. The Barely House would be the worst. You know they would be wearing OSU gear during OUR game :rolleyes:EDIT: I know OBC has a lot of support from ZN.o. How about making OBC the official Zipsnation party?

mention in top mid-major recruiting classes
ZippyTuba11 replied to ivanak's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Honestly, I think the article was fairly accurate. Did we have the best recruiting class? No, but we have one hell of a recruit. Does it really matter where our class is ranked? No.What matters is we still have the best TEAM in the MAC. -
You also have to look at it from the U's perspective: They don't want 5,000 students at the game. If you just built a brand new stadium, would you want to give away 5,000 free tickets, or charge full price for them?

The biggest problem I have always had is Jac never looks for his second and third receivers. If his #1 is open, he'll make a good play. But it drove me up a wall last year to see countless plays where it was 3rd or 4th and long and Kennedy was -wide- open and easily had a first or a TD, but Jac never looked. He just gunned it into coverage and either got picked or effed up the play.If the coaches can get him to be aware of all his options, I think he'll have an incredible year.

Being the first day of sales, I'm not sure I'd believe that spin. Most that I saw there were the more interested fan anyway. Also, the lady handing out bands mentioned 7,000, not 5k. I have no idea if this is true, but that's what the lady said.

A good win will do far better than a good loss. Zips are going to take 'em all the way!I say Zips by 3 -
Good for you. As stupid as it sounds, I'm not even allowed to where those Lance bracelets either. This is just a poor idea. I think the main reason these were made non-removable is not because they want the free advertising (if so, I would have expected something better than "I'll be there" tag) but rather to keep students from taking more than one. They kept no record of which students were taking bands, you just had to show have a zip-card. I think these bands are going to be a big turn off for students that want in, rather than a positive. I told many students today about tickets going on sale, and they all thought it was stupid that you couldn't take off the band (even when I was trying to put a good spin on it. Even when I can't stand the U it seems I can't help but try to sell it) A few even said they would much rather wait and risk not getting into the game. In the long run, I doubt it's really going to affect student ticket sales, but the negative impression is there.

I don't know about you, but the OBC was and will still be my "official watch party." Eff the Barley House.

I was quite annoyed as well. I can't wear this stupid band at work. I cut it off. If they have problems, there will be a scene. This is a very stupid idea. There are far better ways to get students to be "free advertising."Oh, and no, I told them I can't wear the band, and they said either wear it or don't get one.EDIT: and they don't even check your zip card. Just make sure you have it. If they are so worried about having limited student tickets, why don't they keep track. Anybody with a card can get this band, student or not.

I'd say you already have hit that

I find it funny you ask for links for info when you don't give any for yours. But I'll humor your hypocrisy.US News is pay-to-see the rankings, but I'll give you a few non-university-affiliated links http://www.indeed.com/cmp/University-of-Akronhttp://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-117527282.htmlhttp://www.collegebound.net/college-univer...niversity/3102/etcAnd no, Akron does not count "Summit College" numbers. The totals were for MAIN CAMPUS ONLY.

That must be why so many new students are choosing OU over UA....oh wait, they're not. OU attendance only increased 132 students, while Akron increased 1,127, and is third in Headcount growth behind tOSU and Cincinnati (this is based off last year. The Ohio Board has not released this year's totals.)Also:UA's College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering is currently ranked second in the nation by the magazine. The University of Akron is the only university in Ohio with a science and engineering program ranked in the top five nationally by U.S. News. The I/O Psychology Program is also ranked 6th nationally. I could go on, but I won't.

8th place? That's horrible. We can do better.

To add some other perspective to the "no one cares" hype, I work at the Taco Bell across from the Info. Everyday, I hear comments and questions about the stadium from all sorts of people. It's getting to such an extent that I am almost quite annoyed to hear about it (almost that is. I love to talk about it and fill people in about whats going on and clear up rumors). I've yet to hear anything negative about the stadium, except maybe fears that the team will still stink, but that doesn't come up very often. I think Akron is very excited about it, and I love working in the stadium's shadow.

You thought MAC refs were bad before?
ZippyTuba11 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
A way for the University level to solve this is put the arc in themselves... -
I just stumbled on to this thread and thought I'd add a few ideas that I've developed over the years. The biggest problem the band has it that the music faculty look at it as strictly a building block for their Music Education program. They require all Music Ed students to be in the Band for 2 years. That creates a lot of apathy and mistakes because there are a few out there that really do not want to march while in college and it shows on the field.Step 1: Drop the Music Ed requirement.Step 2: Cut the poor players in all sections. The open ranks of the band has always bothered me. We've had some very bad players in the past, and everyone knew it, but there was nothing we could do about it because the band doesn't cut players. I would much rather have a band around 120 that is full of GOOD players, than a 200+ member band that has several BAD players. The magic cut number doesn't have to be set either, like the 110, or OSU's 228. Just cut out the "fat" until we have a really good band. Those two steps will fix nearly every "appearance" mistake that you end up seeing as a fan whether it be bad attitude or sloppy posture, etc . The only players that are in the band then are those that WANT to be there and EARNED their way there.I have several other ideas that would make the band much better to listen to as well, but I know they would never be entertained at the top.+Such as make the band an all brass band. The" Marching Symphonic Band" really doesn't cut it for a fan at a football game, and the more brass you have almost always equals greater sound production. When you're sitting in the top of the stands, you really don't hear what the flutes and clarinets bring to the band.+And don't let the students/Grads pick the music. I apologize to them right off, but the students/grads very often pick music that is their favorite or "pet project" and ends up being nothing that the fans want to hear. These shows would be better off saved for when they have their own high school band.+More flushy drill movements during half time. I know Mr. Karriker really wants to do this, especially because he is a product of a good DCI Corps Band, but he has always been afraid of doing it because the band really isn't good enough in marching discipline. If the band starts cutting their bad players though, K can start writing drills the way he wants.+Add an extra week to band camp. The students at OSU do this voluntarily early in the summer and for players wanting to make the cut it is highly recommended. This extra bit of training really gets the basic learning curve out of the way. That way when the band gets down to the regular camp, it can really focus on the core of drill charts and music.

What happen to the arena talk across from canal park? perfect location, I talk to someone from the city and they said that is still being considered. It would be a terrible PR move for the city to spend money like that at this time.I don't see how this would be a bad PR move for the city. This economy is a perfect time to build, especially if they get $$$ from the government. 1. Hire locals in construction.2. Goods are potentially cheapr now than they will be when the economy rebounds.3. Once completed, ensure it is properly staffed by locals (no outsourcing)4. Keep the arena busy with venues so it brings money into Akron economy.5. When economy rebounds (and it will) the value of the arena will skyrocketFrankly, I think the city and university would be F***ing stupid not to build now. It goes along with that old saying "buy low sell high"

If Miller is as hot as he was in the second half of the Akron tourney game, BG might have a chance at a good upset there.

One very serious thing I hope the Zips coaching staff take into account is the change in elevation out west. This has been a big complaint from a lot of east coast teams that end up getting stuck out west. The change in elevation has very serious effects on a team. The oxygen level is different, and a number of other small things are off enough to throw performance of a player. Add in to the equation that this is going to be a home game for the Zags and the odds start looming over the Zips. With it being spring break, I serious hope the Athletic Dept has the money to send the Zips out ASAP. The sooner they can get adjusted to the environment, the less outside factors will affect the game.

Akron seeding in the NCAA Tournament
ZippyTuba11 replied to IBleedMACGreen's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
We've been calling for this game for a few years now. Too bad it's in Portland. Still, I think Akron has a great chance and I think it will be a great game. -
I'd love to get the Suckeyes, but they will be seeded too low to meet them right off. Maybe I'm alone here, but I wouldn't mind playing Florida St. We beat them last year, we can do it again. It would go a great way to proving that Akron is a strong team and deserving the dance.

Please don't jinx us. Everyone said this about our football team.... A dynasty is more than one year.

Actually its Cvetinovic.
