  1. Yep, that was me. I felt like I was more excited about it than the Akron fans around me. If nothing else, I could watch and cheer those highlights all day long. Perhaps you are right. It did kind of sneak up on us as it started. But it was certainly long enough for everyone to figure out what was going on. And like with the national anthem, if somebody doesn't know that it started, somebody nearby will poke him. Regardless, he was a great player and worthy of the tribute. I hadn't made the Akron connection and probably wouldn't have if not for the timing of this game and the Hall of Fame induction.
  2. Wow, this thread took a dramatic turn. I suppose that it is hard to keep the current issue out of a thread. At any rate, Trump's comments and players kneeling may end up making the problem worse, but I don't think they were the issue for people not attending the Akron/Iowa State game. We have had a few players speak out, but I can't imagine that it will affect attendance in any way for our game Thursday night. Maybe that is why we get to host the first primary/caucus of the presidential campaigns. We seem to be able to rise above some of our own socio-economic demographics. Hardly anybody had heard of Barack Obama when he first started coming to Iowa. And if you hadn't noticed, we are a rather light-skinned state. Yet, early in the primary season, he emerged early as the front-runner here, despite the endurance of some institutional racism and a mainstream Democratic party candidate as the anticipated front-runner going into the campaign.
  3. OK, now I remember you. I didn't connect you with your username. If I had, I would have pummeled you with beer questions, such as how to make a Cardinal and Gold with a red beer than floats like a Guinness. At any rate, thanks for helping out. It is great the way Cyclone fans show up and pitch in. And sorry I didn't see you on the return trip. I may have been sleeping while my friend was driving. It was a pretty demanding weekend.
  4. It seems that tonight is a night for bashing, so I will add mine. I was shocked at the non-reaction to the Jason Taylor tribute. Few of the Akron fans around me were even watching it. Maybe they had seen it before. But I thought the video was really well done. It actually had a plot line and development of narrative themes (and it took me a while to figure out the frequent "20 mile" references). I was riveted to the jumbotron. And then, when it was done, there was a smattering of applause. I stood to my feet and cheered about as loudly as I can for someone related to the team that was putting pressure on us before halftime. Yet, I don't think I saw a single Akron fan around me who looked like he cared during that tribute. What was up with that? Would it have been different if he was there in person?
  5. Yeah, I guess that is what I did. Sorry about that. Frankly, I was a little surprised by the immediate reaction. Personally, I just enjoyed us playing a decent game and winning the second half (which we haven't done very much). I understand that the coaches want to keep us moving forward, but I thought that would come this week. As a diehard fan of a frequent 3-win team, I just wanted to enjoy it for 24 hours or so.
  6. Al, I always like your style! Will call line is too long, so you buy more tickets. Problem-solved. P.S. I don't think I ever saw you in Lot 4. Did you make it to our tailgate? I was on the north end under the tree with the truck and U-Haul.
  7. So, what would you say was the actual attendance? I knew it wasn't 22k, but I don't trust my ability to estimate. I defer to those of you who apparently have had this discussion before. Also, what would you say the percentage breakdown was for Akron/Iowa State fans?
  8. Not to change the subject from Bowden-bashing, but it is interesting to hear the reaction from Iowa State coaches and media. They were very dissatisfied with the outcome. We fans just enjoyed a big win, but the coaches and media really focused on things that still need improvement. 9. #5 Cotton-Moya didn't play. #4 Edwards was covering on the TD pass. #42 Spears was pretty quiet this week. #7 Lanning put lots of pressure on your QB and got a big pick. Best i've seen in terms of control of the line and pressure by our d-line. From what I read in the other thread, it sounds like it might have been largely related to a poor job by your o-line. I'd like to think that our blitzing was executed very well and kept your o-line off-balance.
  10. Thanks. Even got to see myself in the background of a few photos.
  11. Finally got back to Ames. We had a great time in Akron, starting at 7am in Lot 4, and we didn't leave until 6:30pm. The staff was great in helping us get things set up in advance. Thanks for being gracious hosts, off and on the field. And all the Zips fans I met were nice. You are all welcome to tailgate with us next year. We wish the best to you.
  12. Just arriving in Canton to pick up my grill and a few last minute supplies (at Fishers Beer and Wine). Then, head to Akron to scope out Lot 4 and go to the Stow football game.
  13. Al lot depends on defensive lines and linebackers. Good pressure on QBs certainly messes with the air raid. It also helps to have LBs who cover well in the flats and over the middle. I expect us to try to focus on our tall WRs against your CBs. Look for lots of 3 receivers on one side. Our WRs are pretty good at blocking and reading blocks. I hope to see Deshaunte Jones (from Cincinnati) have a big game for the 60+ of his family and friends coming. He is one of the smartest receivers I've ever seen. Great route running and uses blocks downfield very well.
  14. I went to the Minnesota game and got some great photos of him on the sideline. He looked pretty cool with the headset and a baseball cap while in pads. I'm hoping he doesn't get PT this year so that he can use it as a redshirt. Buffalo has a pretty good QB who is likely to hold on to the starting job (think Cam Newton-type body and skill set to a lesser degree). They have played well for two weeks, but let both games get away from them.
  15. Yes. Although Wade has to go to Buffalo for their son's game on Saturday evening, I expect him to be at the tailgate for the early part of the morning. If you want to talk more, let's use private messages, so we can keep this thread related to football (and Dahmer!).
  16. Iowa State will win by more than 11. Warren Ball will have lots of carries and gain lots of yards, but will also have at least one big fumble in the red zone. Jacob Park is going to eat up your CBs. When they crowd our WRs, they will get beaten badly. We are finally going to play a game in which we look like we have a Big 12 air raid offense.
  17. On the other hand, our RB David Montgomery has caused 28 missed tackles in two games! Hope your tacklers brought extra jocks because some guys are going to be faked out of them. And others will need extra underwear because he knocks the crap out of would-be tacklers. He trucked pre-season All-American Josey Jewell on one play last week.
  18. We are not a great tackling team. We had all kinds of guys slapping at Wadley last week instead of wrapping him up. However, give Wadley credit. He brought some great moves. I would expect Ball to have a similar game. Hope Ball gets slippery fingers. We haven't caused a fumble turnover yet this season. And I rarely saw anyone trying to rip the ball out (which is okay if they are wrapping up the ballcarrier, but we haven't been doing that either). Here is the x-factor. #5 Kamari Cotton-Moya, our starting Strong Safety. He is an incredibly hard hitter, but went out with a elbow injury last week and never returned. I contend that Wadley wouldn't have scored his last touchdown if Cotton-Moya had been in there. #4 Evrett Edwards is okay, but there is a dropoff. Edwards danced with Wadley as he scored his last TD. Here is the y-factor. #42 Marcel Spears. Hardly any of us even knew his name before the season. He had 17 tackles last week. He bailed out a lot of teammates who missed tackles. Here is the z-factor. #7 Joel Lanning will be playing only his third game ever on defense this week. He started last season as a QB. Seriously. In the next to last game last season, he ran for 5 TDS . . . and then didn't play the following week! I'm serious. He is explosive in short yardage situations (the "Joel-dozer"), but he doesn't just lumber forward. He hits holes and explodes to the end zone. So far, he hasn't done much on defense to draw my attention, other than a nice QB hurry against UNI that led to an INT and our first TD.
  19. Don't click on this unless you like stupid, superficial humor at the expense of your player's appearance. https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/official-akron-look-alike-thread-2017.231017/ Feel free to reciprocate.
  20. Thanks for getting us back to football. This will be the second week in a row that we have had to face a really good running back. Last week, it was really fun to watch Eastern Iowa University's Akrum Wadley and our David Montgomery run the ball. I'm hoping Warren Ball is a disappointment and doesn't meet my expectations!
  21. My wife's name is Judy V. and her brother Wade taught PE at Revere for many years. Sorry, but I won't be hanging around Lot 9 because we have 150+ coming to our tailgate in Lot 4, so I will need to help with that. Please feel free to stop by Lot 4 though. And note that my wife has a health issue, so unfortunately, she won't be there, but Wade probably will be.
  22. I joke around with my wife and say that it was because she wouldn't date him that he went crazy and started eating people. Then, she says something like, she didn't want it to happen to me, so she married me.
  23. My brother-in-law had a dog named Buckeye. Of course. I taught him to come to "Buckwheat." My brother-in-law hated that!
  24. My wife was standing next to him in the National Honor Society photo that he snuck into and stood with his back to the camera!
  25. Two Ohio State head coaches have come from Iowa State: Sam Willaman and Earl Bruce. It seems that there was an intentional effort in the early 20th Century for Iowa State to become more like Ohio State in terms of its athletic program. Didn't quite work out.
