  1. From the article:He attended Indiana, playing for the perennial power, and was a standout for a team that still holds the NCAA single-season record with 23 wins in a row in 1997 before losing to UCLA in the national semifinals. When the Zips reach the national semifinals, they will be in the exact same position. How cool would it be for Porter to break his playing record coaching the team that does it.
  2. Zips down 37-33 right now. Humpty hit a three.
  3. The tourney video is an $8.95 charge. You can get the audio on http://www.wralsportsfan.com/
  4. Since we can't reply to the News Collector posts, I just thought this one was impressive enough that it deserved a reply. So the number one team in the nation also puts up two academic All-Americans. The more I know about this team, the more impressed I become. Caleb porter has put the foundation in place to perhaps become the best coach UA has ever had in any sport. Long live the king!
  5. That was pretty much the only comment on the board, they are not happy to have to face us after a 13-3-3 season but they are confident because they played us at our house in the preseason (so they know what they're getting into) and apparently because they beat us at our house a couple years ago in the tournament. Don't see that happening again. I think they'd best concentrate on Stetson. It's nice to be the 800 pound gorilla for once.
  6. My fantasy final four - the teams I'd most like to see make it and use beat them in some combination - Akron-OSU/UCLA-Harvard. What I do not want to see is any team in the state of North Carolina make it (so no NCST, UNC or even Wake) seeing as how the final four will be held in Cary, NC (five minutes from NCST, 20 from UNC and about two hours from Wake). I don't even want to see any ACC teams.
  7. Good god - See Tee as the voice of reason - up is down, left is right, I may have to go root for Can't State.
  8. Since you asked, here were all the conference finals results - courtesy of Top Drawer Soccer. They don't mention that the MAC does not have an automatic bid this year. Also, for the question on why Butler will go on the road as a #12 seed, according to big soccer.com Butler did not put in a bid to host. Teams still have to do that - I could have seen something odd like that happening to us given our starange history. Anyway, the conference tournament results:America East: Stony Brook 2, UMBC 0Leonardo Fernandes and Raphael Abreu scored to give the 6-9-4 Seawolves a surprise bid to the NCAA Tournament.Atlantic 10: St. Louis 2, Dayton 0Michael Robson and Michael Roach scored for the Billikens in the final.ACC: Virginia 1, NC State 0Will Bates scored the winner and Diego Restrepo recorded the shutout in goal for the Cavaliers.Atlantic Sun: Stetson 2, Mercer 1Griffin Gilstrap scored twice to lead the Hatters to the crown.Big East: St. John's 0, Notre Dame 0 (St. John's advanced on penalties 4-2)St. John's won on penalties after 110 minutes of scoreless play. Derby Carillo came up with the pivotal post-match save.Big South: Winthrop 2, Liberty 1Matthew Skonicki and Stephen Nsereko each scored to lift Winthrop.Big Ten: Ohio State 1, Penn State 0David Tiemstra scored a last-minute winner for the Buckeyes. Big West: UC Irvine 4, UC Santa Barbara 1Gray Bailey, Carlos Aguilar, Spencer Thompson and Irving Garcia scored for the Anteaters. CAA: UNC Wilmington 1, Northeastern 0Nassim Berhouni scored the winner for the Seahawks. Brock Duckworth recorded the shutout in goal.Conference USA: Tulsa 3, Marshall 0Austin Neil, Justin Chavez and Jose Parada scored for the Golden Hurricane. Richard Smith scored the winner and Austin Harms recorded the shutout in goal.Metro Atlantic: Loyola (MD) 1, Niagara 0Matt Tyrie scored late in overtime to lift the Greyhounds to the win. Kyle Wittman recorded the shutout in goal.MAC: Akron 2, Hartwick 1Darlington Nagbe scored the game-winning goal to give the Zips a perfect 20-0-0 record heading to the NCAA Tournament.Missouri Valley: Drake 2, Evansville 1Kevin Shrout scored the winner for the Bulldogs.Mountain Pacific: Sacramento State 2, New Mexico 2 (Sacramento State advances on penalties, 5-4)Matt Linenberger scored a late equalizer for the Hornets, who then prevailed on penalties.Northeast: Monmouth 2, Quinnipiac 1Chase Barbieri and Ryan Kinne scored for the Hawks to push their record to 18-1-1.Pac-10: UCLA drew with San Diego State 1-1. The Bruins had already won the Pac-10 title. California upset Stanford 1-0 on a Jacob Wilson winner, while Danny Mwanga scored twice in a 3-2 win by Oregon State over Washington.Patriot: Bucknell 1, American 0Brendan Burgdorf scored on a 15th-minute header to lead the Bison to victory.Southern: Wofford 2, Elon 1Wilson Hood and Kentrel Owens scored for the Terriers.Summit: Western Illinois 1, UMKC 0Another title for the Leathernecks as Oskar Gasecki scored the winner and Stephen Paterson recorded a shutout in goal.West Coast: San Diego clinched the regular season title with a scoreless draw against St. Mary's (CA) on Friday, who finishes 2nd.
  9. The #15 seed should be North Carolina St.
  10. They had a #6 RPI, but did not get seeded, so RPI doesn't mean everything. I'm telling everyone I know that the Zips got a #1 seed, regardless of whether they care or not.
  11. Talk about a tough opening round game - Louisville vs. Indiana. I will be rooting for OSU to make the final four as well, I think we match up very well with them and I'd far rather face them than UNC in Raleigh, NC. I want UNC to lose as early as possible. That's looking pretty far ahead though, just one game at a time right? And as far as Notre Dame, even if they survive the opening round (not a given), I don't think they get past Northwestern.
  12. This the revenge tour - we can take out South Florida and then possibly finish off Northwestern in the regional final. Its not a bad draw there are a lot of other teams I'd be a lot more worried about and we avoid all ACC teams until the College Cup. This is the tournmament, we're going to face good teams every game.
  13. That answers that - no Akron conspiracy!
  14. Anyone seeing anything? I just have NFL talking heads on ESPNews.Edit - I just heard them mention it is coming up.
  15. One particular game comes to mind! Now that's just mean!
  16. Nice to meet you at the championship game. Seems like you are among the few who understands thatour seed is not about the Zip's record or who we beat. It is completely about how the NCAA operates. The field is composed of forty-eight teams seeded one to forty-eight. The number one seed gets thetheoretically easiest path to the national championship. Virginia is going to get the number one seed. The odds against the Zips getting a top four seed are astronomical. We are not a BCS school. There are NOT four number one seeds. Seeds one through four get home field advantage up to theFinal Four. Go back and look how I built the Elite Eight and see how the teams will face each otherto get to the Final Four.A fair number of posters on ZN were not around a few years back when the Zips dominated the polls. For more than half the season the Zips were a consensus number one. How surprised were we whenthe lofty NCAA relegated the Zips to the ninth seed. That forced Akron to go on the road in the thirdround to face eighth seed UCONN. After dispatching UCONN in a shoot out (at one point the Zips ledthat game 3-0) the Zips played number one seed Maryland and lost in a shoot out. Maryland breezedthrough the Final Four to claim the championship. Oh, did I mention that Maryland is an ACC school?I strongly hope that I am wrong in my assessment. Until I see it with my own eyes I will hold the NCAAas suspect. The NCAA screwed us last year, remember? While I do suspect that the NCAA is certainly biased for BCS type schools, this year will provide an interesting test. We did very well in those other years you mentioned, in 2005 we did indeed hold the top spot for four weeks, but in the final coaches poll before the tournament started we were ranked 8th. I can't find the RPI number but as I remember it was right around that same value and we were seeded ninth. Seems reasonable to me. Last year our RPI was 7 and we received a 5 seed. Also seems reasonable (we even went up a little). If we don't get a top four seed this year (and I do expect it should be #1) which would give all home games, then I'll believe any conspiracy theory you want. I just have a hard believing the NCAA has an admin whose sole purpose is to look for ways to screw Akron (or other non "BCS" schools). While the events in the past could look suspicious there is at least plausible deniability on the part of the NCAA as to why they happened (even last year the rule was in place about the home field and Akron did not have a backup field that qualified. Was it right? No, but there was a rule put in place to prevent it from happening this year because of Akron). So what I'm saying is that this year is a really good test case. If Akron does not get at least a top four seed, then the system is crooked. I don't think it is. We'll see at 5:30 today. Now if you want my opinion on FBS football, that is a whole different matter ...
  17. Steve seems like a great guy, we were all excited when he joined the Zips, especially at his size. I love when he gets into games. Don't know what keeps him out but he does have some production when he gets in. Hope he gets some more playing time this year and that he really enjoys hs college experience (heck he already got to be a part of an NCA tournament team). And at 6'10" he might be able to talk directly to the pilots. Best of luck to him. :)I also think this is a good reminder to people who post on these boards. Family members do read tham and the attitude of fans can matter. Once a Zip always a Zip, I will always try to support anyone who decides to join UA. If I'm really annoyed I just won't say anything.
  18. Are you related to the Zipmeister by chance? I think the Zips win by 10, AP used to be a pretty good team but they seem down this year. I think its great that Tim Carroll got a start, kid must have been working his butt off with all of the talent we have on the team. I think holding out Zeke from the start is a pretty good move too (but I want to see hm soon ).
  19. At least we're only being shown on ESPNU so our embarrassment isn't completely nationwide. After seeing them last night, I wouldn't bet against Temple knocking off CMU in the MAC title game. Hey, how about those socceroos?
  20. I assume you're not counting Can't then? I sometimes wonder how much of a factor it is for talent dilution in the state with all of the D-1A teams (even though most of them are at the bottom of the D-1A scale). Ohio has more D-1A teams than even California or Florida. Second only to Texas (11).
  21. Is there any way we could change the title of this thread so it looks sarcastic now?
  22. Yep, right before they get "tested".
  23. Even if you only meant in a half, we still lose. The only thing we're "violently defending" at home is the urge to vomit!
  24. Four unanswered TD's. 35-17.
  25. D is not looking so good. Temple just scored another TD right before the half. Lots of big gains. Three unanswered scores. Nicely just threw a bad interception trying to keep a play alive and now Temple has the ball on our five. Ugh.
