  1. I think it is a very challenging schedule. Good for a team with National title aspirations. I'm glad we get Indiana at home, but I think we might as well just apply for Big Ten associate membership (and that way Northwestern can't keep ducking us:)). And why all the hate for Oklahoma State Unversity. It's a fine school.
  2. At least we aren't playing Army this season
  3. Or Rosey Brown, Len Ford or Willie Lanier (all of whom are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame with Leroy Kelly) - we maybe have a shot with one. Also Chester, Raymond (1970 - 1981) Franks, Elvis (1980 - 1986) Fuqua, John "Frenchy" (1969 - 1976) Meggett, Dave (1989 - 1998) Shiancoe, Vishante (2003 - 2008) for a few other guys you may have heard of. Morgan's NFL player history eclipses Akron in quality and quantity. Not to say that I expect the game to be that close or a Morgan victory, but they do have a pretty impressive history.
  4. My guess would be that Jeff will have to recuse himself and Keith will handle the visit. Anybody know any good asst coaches out there that happen to be named Jeff Smart (or perhaps the less likely Shaka Boals? )
  5. Nor the soccer team Fab 5 (selected to the USA National Youth team). I'll take all of the "Fab 5" players we can get.
  6. The program will go on just fine, KD has both a process and a reputation to fall back on to hire more quality assistants. Remember Shaka Smart was an assistant in the early years and somehow we survived without a guy who was a very good recruiter and was thought of well enough to get the VCU job as his first job. I like Coach Boals a great deal but I also hope that he ends up doing what is best for him, even if that would mean leaving our program. I certainly hope not, but it does (and should) happen. That just indicates the quality of asst. coaches we can get. And to the poster of this topic, would it have killed you to add a question mark at the end of the subject line? I thought he was already gone.
  7. Agggh - what happened to the Cams? Alll I get is a 404 page not found error when I try to link to where they were. Did they move?
  8. A GoZips article said that the soccer team had five players named to the US Youth Soocer squad (and only Kofi Sarkodie is already playing for us). THis program just looks better and better. I hope we get to a place like UNC in basketball soon where getting four or five blue chip players will just seem routine to us, instead of amazing but I can't wait for futbol season to start either. Right after I bought my season football tickets, I sent some money to both the basketball and soccer teams too, the football team for potential and the other two for results.
  9. But yet this was Boston University, not Boston College, so outside of Hockey they would be mid-major at best. No FBS football, and America East in basketball. Does the MAC (and CCHA) play second fiddle to everyone else? And if Miami and others can play in the CCHA for hockey, why can't we gather up everyone in the MAC, Kentucky and South Carolina (I think those are the SEC soccer playing schools) and a few other stragglers and make our own soccer conference (at least until the MAC gets more soccer schools, we already have two outsiders anyway). Vanguard Soccer Conference anyone?
  10. Ten year agricultural plan with alfalfa as the field crop rotation?
  11. What a gut punch game for Miami (has a MAC team ever won a National Title in any sport? Someone had to somewhere along the line, didn't they?). Tough loss in a title game, they can join Zips soccer in 86 as runners-up. A small bit of irony even though it was hockey (and not against us) but they were up by two with less than a minute to go and were finally beaten on a "bank shot" (deflected off of one of their players).
  12. But there is an Akron, CO (and no actual Dayton), plus Colorado is kind of nice, although I'll agree the seat description is confusing. Lets go with Dayton, Idaho, no Akron there. That ought to scare her off. Or if she's in attendance at the JAR by chance, how abut a nice "Welcome to North Dayton" sign?
  13. Is there something wrong with posting in that thread? I could be wrong but there are 8 pages of that thread and I've posted on there too several times. So if you want to insult anyone, insult me! and insult everyone else who posted in that thread...{Slowly rises up like in bad 80's teen movie} I did too, insult me! {Hears sound of slow clapping in background}
  14. During halftime at the last game in the Rubber Bowl when we played Up, Up and Away. It was the last set and then we marched it downfield and straight into our seats. Someone wasn't paying attention. It was a tribute to the band back in the 70's.The original was done back in 1977 (finished in 1978) as part of a promotional video for the Goodyear Sales/Marketing dept. for their sales training department. It was called "Something called Pride". You can see the original blimp in the second video, at the end. It's kind of cool to see the band more than 35 years ago... This video was used to recruit members to the band through NE Ohio as part of a recruiting campaign to get more members in the band.No better way to draw new recruits than tell them they'll be playing in miserable weather in front of near empty stands.
  15. The NCAA can get pretty tricky in their interpretation even in something that appears to be innocent contact, but the rules are fairly clear. If you have an interest in a program you can be considered a booster. You don't want to end up being "that guy" who gets the program in trouble and potentially gets a recruit we wanted to end up playing soemwhere else because of soemthing "illegal" that we did.
  16. You're right. The blues are cool as they stand now, sans the gargantuan numbers. Also, perform a search and check out the absolutely sick (I mean that in a good way ) uniforms designed by vmd in another thread. His graphics were serious work!Maybe this thread has gotten too long. Those designs are in this thread (page 5). I'm guessing VMD may be a graphic design major, judging by that and some of the other stuff that has appeared. If not, a re-think of a major might be in order.
  17. And we got 1/2 second of Air Time in "One Shining Moment" last night. They showed Heyveldt yelling after he dunked with "Akron" quite visible on Nate Linhart. Well, quite visible meaning if you slowed it down to 1/15th speed and looked, otherwise you'd have no clue.
  18. And even with his not being able to play his senior year (very disappointing), he has so much talent that perhaps of year of playing "coach" as he did might even be of more benefit.
  19. Thanks for the extra effort, some great shots in there - oh my gosh, seat backs.
  20. Continue to look for Zips related stories, pictures or mentions like this one ...SI #8 Top ten moment in this years NCCA TournamentOk, so it was Jeremy Pargo dunking on Steve McNees but all publicity is good publicity?
  21. I followed an Elton Alexander link to the Bobcat board because their folks seem to be a little unhappy with their future football OOC schedules. One poster believes we're heading out soon. Even though it was posted on April 1st, I think he was sincere - Scroll down to Bobcat Poster Ohio69 "The only realistic option for the forseeable future is the MAC. Ohio does not support athletics financially very well at all. And, its not going to come up with the $5 million annually to take the next baby step to CUSA level in the current economic climate.Unlike the other 12 MAC coaches, I don't think Solich is looking to move up to BCS as soon as possible. So, Ohio has a great opportunity to go on a tear like Can't did with hoops and consistently win the MAC. It will be frustrating to watch Akron bolt for CUSA and reap all the benefits athletics can bring (enrollment, prestige, community support, etc.). Its gonna happen...."Given the choice of the MAC and C-USA I'd rather stick with the MAC, C-USA is just too geographically dispersed. Besides one poster later said we weren't well regarded enough academically. Maybe we can point him to the $1B research grants page ...
  22. And if every conference champion makes it, maybe it might help convince Notre Dame to join one so we don't have to keep seeing them every week, every year on NBC. Hasn't the viewing public suffered enough?
  23. It's also fun to play teams that have good, knowledgable fans like DistrictBaller. By the way, here is a quote from the article from Keith Dambrot about Shaka Smart."He's the guy who was telling a middle-aged man [at Akron], 'Hey, stay the course. Take four-year guys. Don't take any high-risk guys.' There's not many young people in America today who take that approach. He just has an understanding of what it takes to be successful."While that is obviously the Dambrot philosophy, I just want to know which one of you guys he was referring to.
  24. If you look at last years final teams the conference champs would be:ACC VTSEC FloridaB10 Penn StB12 OUBE CinPAC 10 USCMAC BuffaloWAC BoiseMWC UtahSunbelt TroyConfUSA ECUThe five at-large would likely be:AlabamaOSUTexasTCU Georgia, Oregon, TexTech (pick one)I don't think you could argue that a deserving team didn't get in, plus one more non-BCS team gets a slot (in TCU). And just like the NCAA tournament, there are teams that get in that wouldn't have if you just took the top teams (and none of them would have a chance at winning the national title in either sport) so even though the 12th, 13th or maybe even 14th ranked team might have an argument (just like the say 46th ranked team for the NCAA tournament) but none of them win it either. Plus it gives the higher ranked teams a potential "breather" with the possibility of a tremendous upset. In this scenario the only three teams you could argue with would be Buffalo, Troy and ECU and all of them were a champion on a FBS conference too and they all have the same disadvantages of competing again the Big Boys so recognize that and give them a shot or kick them out of FBS (of course we'd have to re-name FBS). Plus you could schedule the prelims in December and play the final three games after the "other" bowl games have concluded. 8 teams would get the same number of games anyway, 8 would play one extra game, 4 would play two extra games and and 2 would play three extra games. It is highly unlikely any conference would get more than three teams (in this one no one has more than two) and if you can't finish in the top three of your own conference you don't deserve to play for the national title.By the way my seedings would have been:1 Florida16 Troy8 VT9 OSU5 Utah12 TCU4 Penn St13 G/O/TT3 Oklahoma14 ECU6 Alabama11 Cincinnati7 Texas10 Boise St2 USC15 BuffaloWho wouldn't want to watch that?
