Akron #93 on the NY Times football countdown
MDZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Also in the Quad Countdown at #69 - Wake Forest - is this missive -Nickname: Demon Deacons. Say what you will about Blue Devils, but Demon Deacons has to be the scariest nickname in the F.B.S. Also frightening? Aztecs, Fighting Irish, Golden Hurricane, Horned Frogs, Razorbacks and Vandals. Least intimidating? Zips, Volunteers, Terrapins, Hokies, Ducks and Beavers. Most delicious? Boilermakers. At least we have some good company. Fear the Roo! -
actually, those are her own every day glasses. if you looked at the pics from ncaa's you would see that she had tape on the bridge to keep them from sliding down her nose.My guess is the Zipmeister was trying to make a funny - as in that rather large weapon that appears to be attached to the bridge of her nose. Hard to know what to take literally on a message board, but I laughed.

Check Out Patrick Nicely Saturday @ 7pm
MDZip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Didn't get to see the game but Nicely must have done pretty well. Ohio won 38-31 and there was this little tidbit I found on PhillyBurbs.com.And on this night, it was designed for the Ohio offense and the quarterback tandem of Austin Boucher and Patrick Nicely. Combined, they threw for 394 yards and three touchdowns while completing 28 of 38 passes. Still, the scarlet and gray needed a touchdown from a defensive lineman placed into the backfield to pull out the victory.Nicely 10-14-1, 147 yards, 1 TD. -
Coach Dambrot and Coach Kest get contract extensions
MDZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I think perhaps the most impressive thing about Keith in the writeup that you don't necessarily think about is that the Zips have been in post-season play 3 of the last four years and the one year they weren't was the year that most of us thought would have been most likely. That's pretty impressive when you think back on all lof the years of D-I basketball.Coach Kest certainly is showing signs of upgrading the program. While it didn't show in a ton of wins this year, how often do you kick off most of a team and then improve in the number of wins the following year? She has earned some addtional time for sure. And coach Jones has the team playing well too. Add in coach Porter, coach Engle and coach Mitchell (heck, even tennis is looking up) and Akron seems to have a very solid set of coaches worth trying to lock up for a while. -
Ridiculous to even make bracketology at this time and it looks like most of the lower leagues reps were just based on the teams that won this year ... however ... it is kind of nice to be considered with the Marquettes, Miami (FL)'s of the college basketball world. Besides I'd love to be a 12 seed. Maybe Joe Lunardi knows about Zeke.

Yes - The Rumor Wheel Spin Landed on Houston
MDZip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
And does this sound sort of familiar too? It was the first comment after the article.Houston support your University! We have a great school #1 and then, we have fun, competitive athletic teams. Get out to Robertson this year! The Coogs play an exciting brand of football! Now, I have a challenge... to the HOUSTON CHRONICLE... Justice just challeneged Houstonians... I challenge you all to act like we have a major University in town! UT is in Austin, Texas A&M is in College Station... I dont want to see them on the Front Page... I want to see the University of HOUSTON on the Front page of the Chronicle or at least the Sports Page... I get tired of seeing our great University snubbed and stuck on page 13! -
Yes - The Rumor Wheel Spin Landed on Houston
MDZip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Snippet of an article from the Houston Chronicle, detailing what Mack has in front of him there -Nothing is going to happen without money, lots of it. That’s the rub. UH alums must buy tickets and write checks. There’s no magic. UH will market to the entire city, but in the beginning it’s about getting those 220,000 alumni interested. One of the enduring mysteries about sports at UH is why so many graduates care so little. A small knot of intense fans show up and scream and write letters, but they’re a small minority. A much larger number of UH grads get their degrees and go away forever. Some of them talk about coming back. If the Coogs are this. If the Coogs are that. They swear that if UH ever plays Texas in the national championship game, they just might consider buying a ticket. UH fans still upset about that Big 12 snub need to get over it. That was 15 years ago. I don't know why Mack left then. He had exactly all of that here. Substitute UA for UH (except the Big 12 part ). Maybe he just loves building stadiums. Or maybe the money had something to do with it. Here is the whole article -
Z.I.P. Inspired, Favorite Big-11 Team Poll (Minus NU)

I voted for Ohio State just to annoy people. Well, plus that was who I remember listening to on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid - Archie Griffin, Pete Johnson, Cornelius Green .... oh, sorry. -
Actually, I think Akron's scheduling this year is exactly how we should be doing it. One "pay" game against high-level BCS (which allows us to play against a high level of competition, we get huge press if we win and it helps us pay to have an FCS team come into our place). I'm not thrilled with Morgan State but it gives us a pretty good chance to open the stadium with a win (which is far from guaranteed with Indiana) and one FCS win a year right now counts as bowl eligibilty. Why wouldn't we want that? Then a home and home series against the lower BCS or non-BCS is perfect (even though we had to trade Syracuse 2-1 which I think we should stop now). We need 6 home games a year, we can buy one FCS and we should be able to trade for the other. According to this (and I do not think it is still entirely accurate):Future Akron OOC Opponentswe are back to only five home games with the following opponents for 2010:Mich St (away)Kentucky (away)Syracuse (home)Indiana (away)While those are great opponents, that schedule is as they say, nucking futz. Who knew when this schedule was made that Syracuse wouldn't be that good (and in another year they could be again). I think Kentucky could be off the table because of the scheduling snafu and is that is the case we should replace them with a home FCS game. The next year we have Ohio St and Cincinnati on the road (so we need to find someone willing to trade a 1-1 home game) and then get another FCS team. There is a hierarchy in FBS and we are toward the bottom (fortunately this kind of scheduling can help us). At least there is another tier below us. Let's buy Youngstown St (well, rent them I guess), that would be an FCS team that might generate some interest. And if they won't come as a pay game, there are a lot of other FCS schools. I think this is how the entire MAC should schedule. Put me in charge of scheduling, I'm ready.

Logo looks great - now the formerly least interesting web cam is now the most interesting one - at least for the time being.

Great list, two things stand out to me. While you're right, you may be missing a few older championships, but even if its reasonably accurate list, the rate of championships over the last few years has been incredible. And while it looks like you broke it down by primarily by calendar year instead of school year, if you look at it strictly by school year, I think this is the greatest year in athletics in school history. With the mens soccer team with a sweet sixteen appearance (and we all know it should have been better), a basketball NCCA appearance and MAC championship and two individual NCAA championships, this year has got to top the list. Also men's outdoor track has won the last two MAC championships too.
-
And as a result of Stevi's points the Akron women currently sit tied for 14th (they were tied for 4th right after she won it). Plus we have two All-Americans with her and Daniel Kinsey. Pretty cool. Winning an NCAA championship is no small thing, congratulations to her. So does Mack get credit for this one? I think not, he announced he was leaving before she won it. Did Houston win any NCAA championships today?

On the camera pointing East, you can see quite a lot of progress on the dorms. I know they don't affect the stadium progress, but the whole campus together is going to look really impressive when that's done. They won't be done by the stadium opening but does anyone know what the completion date for them is? Once the stadium is done will we have "dorm-cam" until they're done?

How did you find Zipsnation?
MDZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Board Comments, Suggestions & Technical Support
Being relatively isolated in Maryland (although I was suprised how many Zips fans came to the games we played at Navy), around the time the Zips were in the MACC for football, I didn't have anyone else to share in the fun, so I happened to do a search and ran across ZipsNation at that time. I lurked for a while, figuring since I didn't live there I wouldn't have much to contribute but once I got the hang of how the site worked, I got bold and posted. Here I am a couple years later with a few hundred posts and living 360 miles from Akron and I have season tickets for football (still have family in the area) and have donated money to basketball and soccer. I dragged former Zips who knew nothing about us being in the Basketball title game this year to my house to watch it. I am fairly sure I would have never done any of that and would have continued to have felt isolated and detached from the Universitiy without ZNO. I've met a number of members on road trips (the Captain at the Pitt basketball game, GoZips out in Portland, JohnnyZip84 and SeeTeeZip at the Ball State game last year). I want people to know what a gem Akron really has, it ticks me off when people put it down like it is a glorified community college, it could not be further from that now. Kudos to the folks who started this board and the visionary leadership we have on campus now. I try to talk up the University whenever I can.As a side note, my girlfriend's son got a brochure from Akron. It could not have portrayed the University more poorly. It basically showed three kids on the front smiling in Akron shirts. Those were the only graphics. I brought her last weekend for the stadium tour and she was blown away by the campus, couldn't believe it was in the center of Akron. She also thought the brochure that was sent didn't even come close to representing the University the way it is now. We need to do better in representing the University in all aspects. -
Ahhh, don't worry about it, this isn't exactly the National Archives. While the heads-up is nice to keep the conspiratorial theorists among us quiet, we appreciate all the effort that goes into maintaining ZNO. This is all assuming, of course, that none of MY posts were deleted.

Scheduling..let's get on the ball, Rhoades!!!
MDZip replied to xu9697's topic in Akron Zips Football
I've been to both Roberston stadium at the University of Houston and the Info. The Info kicks Roberston's butt now (well other than the Heisman trophy banner), but that might be the reason they want him. Almost no one is any job in the country has such loyalty to a place that they wouldn't take a better position somewhere else (otherwise they are likely retired in place). I wouldn't even be surprised (nor hold any grudge) if in a few years after more success, KD went on elsewhere. It is a fact of life in smaller leagues. The job a a higher-pressure (and higher paid) university does not draw everytone, however. Alabama has now had 5 head coaches since 2000. I wouldn't be happy to be a fan of their program right now either. By the way. Mack is one of eight people vying for the UH job. Odds aren't good, but if he gets it, good for him. -
Buffalo - FootballMarshall - Football (they brought them back from the dead literally)It would be fairly easy to look at all 120 D-1 schools and come up with a list of schools that have had to cut sports to save money and brought them back when alumni and school attendance were able to support it.Marshall never dropped football, they even played the year after the crash. They have had a team continuously since 1919.

CONGRATULATIONS ZIPNATION...as of 8:03 PM
MDZip replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
With Zeke the Zip being ofizzle now (man I just can't pull that off), at least we know that will be the only ZZZZ's in the JAR for the next few years. As a matter of fact, I think Dr. Z should be forced to transfer his moniker for the next four years. -
Downtown Arena might not be such a good idea
MDZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Interestingly, the distance between their current and proposed arenas is almost exactly the same as ours, a little over a mile difference. The biggest difference though is the majority of our campus lies bewteen the two sites while the majority of theirs is all to one side. We'd still have a little better situation in my opinion. -
It is a great roster. So who will be taking over for Evan Bush? Is it Meves? Last freshman goalie we had (Bush) worked out pretty well.

There is a pretty interesting article from the Columbus dispatch about how open FBS schools are to athletics records (particularly football).Columbus Dispatch ArticleIts hows how amenable schools were to giving the records, lots of schools blanked them out, Akron did not get very good marks in that regard. Some wanted too much money to cover the cost of the request (most were under $100, all but one was under $1,000 and the University of Maryland wanted over $30,000 - I guess when you have a 10% basketball garduation rate, you have a lot more to hide). The Zips have also been hit with only one major violation ove the last 50 years or so, it was in 1984 and it was the only violation they ever got. Arizona State is tied for the lead with 8 majors (and a number of minors) while the entire MAC only has 10 majors between all 14 teams. Buffalo leads the way with three. I definitely question one stat for Akron though, it says the general student population graduation rate is only 36%. That can't be right. Anyway, a pretty interesting article with some useful information.

Akron #93 on the NY Times football countdown
MDZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
They ranked us one spot ahead of Purdue (they were #94 and had a 46 position drop from last year). i don't agree with that but they always have a "teaser" at the bootm of the page to give you a clue who the next team is. The teaser at the bootm of the Purdue story for Akron was Who is No. 93?: Our next school was ranked by the Princeton Review as the No. 1 best value among American private colleges.I'm thinking there may have been a mistake. -
That is true and The Mob would sound way better than Pouch, Roo Zoo, etc. I say we go with it.

Well I was really more interested in a Shakespearian sonnet with an interesting iambic pentameter but since you asked for haiku:Football 33Can't's to Akron's last champAnd Basketball 1But I'll end with a limerickSo that you say that our team's in the canAnd it was never a part of our planBut you cannot complainuntil you've suffered real painand tragically end up as a K.S.U. fan
