I was just excited to see the signing and commented that he was highly rated. I am simply pleased with the initial returns, didn't intend to get in to a "stars" debate.

He looks really tough to catch in the pocket. Look at the moves/scrambles starting around the :43 mark

You guys better watch out; you are going to bring the "stars don't matter" folks out of the wood work with all kinds of exceptions to the rule.
An interesting survey, just to gauge the feeling of the zips nation room, would call for a simple yes/no answer to the question "in college football are stars and talent positively related?" My guess would be "yes" will win.
No kidding. Who is playing for the National Championship? And who has had the best recruiting in the last 3 years? 🎤

That list of “all-time commits” is absolutely laughable. I follow this program religiously and can only recall a handful of players at the top ever doing anything significant, with Deryn Bowser probably being just about the only one to live up to expectation.
The point of my comment is that the bar is being raised. It appears the players we are targeting and picking up are much higher rated than what we have been able to sign in the past - I view this as a positive.
If you get one 3 star player every 3-4 years, the chances of them failing are pretty high, especially with bad coaching.
A 5 star QB is not going to live up to his potential throwing to 1 star receivers and 1 star OCs.
A 5 star QB is not going to live up to his potential behind a bunch of 1 star OL.
I guarantee if you look at the recruiting ratings in college and the MAC there is a correlation to top recruiting ratings and championships.

I just don't know why we wouldn't want to be unique AND get away from the last 3 years of script embarrassment.
Fresh start! Rebrand! It has already been created so no effort needed.
We've got Rooheads on the football field, "Z" on the basketball court, script Akron on football helmets, "Z" on the Gozips website, etc. Consistency and repetition drives branding.
The "Z" is cool and I can't think of another school that could use it.
Like the rest of you I am more interested in Ws though.

I would think your use of HIS isn't because you think JT is JC, but I'm not certain of that. Lol
My point with my comment was that stating "No wonder he doesn't feel too embraced." doesn't seem to agree with JT holding his party at UA's Infocision Stadium.
I, too, would have thought that UA would have done something to involve average Zips fans in the celebration of JT's HoF induction. After all, how many former Zips are in the Pro Football HoF just 15 miles or so south of The University of Akron? UA seems to have its "hand" out quite often looking for donations from us. Perhaps they could have sponsored some activities around JT's induction and sold tickets, items, etc. as a fundraiser. Maybe even asked JT if he would be open to raffling off some tickets for a lucky few to attend his celebration at Infocision. Further evidence of the shortcomings of previous leadership...actually, lack thereof.
💯 UA leadership has been pathetic. Hopefully things are different now.

As a graphic designer it drives me crazy and yes, I probably care more about this stuff than the casual fan.
The issue I have is that the Akron wordmark isn't a logo. It's a stock Nike font from their Uniform Builder site using their generic "Script" font. I'm assuming whoever was in charge of ordering the basketball uniforms a few years ago, went to that site and picked that font for the jerseys.
This is perfectly okay and it happens all the time.
Some examples:
Unless you're Ohio State, Oregon, Syracuse, etc. You order basketball uniforms from a specific list of templates. The athletic budget for smaller schools can't afford to have custom uniforms designed and honestly Nike isn't really worried about what Akron, BG and Toledo are wearing.
The issue is that someone important liked it so much they wanted to make it the official logo of a D1 school. Basically the equivalent of going into Microsoft word, picking a clipart image and using it as an official logo. Something that's done by lower level High Schools.
The full kangaroo and Z logos looked awesome on the helmets and hope Miller and Guthrie take note.
100% AGREE. It was a half as job picking from stock script and stock stripes and stock logos, just like everything else they did. That is why we are a joke today.
This is "all in" time. The stars have aligned for us again. We have a beautiful stadium that needs to be filled. The potential is there. We need to attract fans, which will in turn attract players. Kids love cool looking gear, fans like cool looking gear. The script Akron a
Merchandising revenue for colleges is so important....ever watch the documentary on the Fab5 and how much money they made for the University of Michigan? It is insane.
To ignore what great marketing and merchandising for UA could mean is naive.
And also, this is now real College Merchandizing about to explode
Talking about logos seems to tweek some people on here. Let's face it UA athletics needs a total OVERHAUL. The pundits praise the hire but at the same time take shots at the program. We need to distance ourselves from that and create a new identity and brand.
If crap like this didn't matter, there would be no need for a marketing team. If you don't think this matters, hell we should save some salaries in our marketing and just choose boxes from the Nike catalog.

@a-zip this is your topic. I don't think you can edit a poll into this thread.
If you started another thread with a poll, I could merge this one into it.
Ok, I started it. Thanks. Hope I did it correctly. Feel free to edit it if you are able.

Do you think we should distance ourselves from the past 3 years and change our primary logo?

Funny, I tried to do a poll after I started this. It wouldn't work, now I understand.

Coach M needs to talk to Gibson asap if he hasn't already. You lose the leader of the offense it is not a surprise the best receiver follows. Maybe it is too late.
-
The main reason I brought this up is because I feel like we are making a fresh start. I would like to get as far away from the past 3 years as possible. Now is as good a time to rebrand as any. IMHO. This does not take away for enthusiasm for the hiring of Coach Moorhead. Relax

College football fan forums never cease to amaze me. You got a great new coach, but are focused on a secondary logo. Take the weekend and enjoy the gift you just got.
Focused? LOL 🤣

I actually really like the script Akron-- feels like UCLA or Pitt which I think are unique-- and more importantly it tells a viewer where this team is from, who it is. I can see using the script Akron as primary and the Z as a secondary logo. The Z is stronger than the old A with the roo for sure.
BTW, I am a brand and marketing nerd so my 2cents, while just my opinion, is rooted in the idea that just seeing a 'Z' is to obscure to derive any identity or meaning.
So if it feels like UCLA or Pitt, how is it unique?
-
Congratulations Mr. Guthrie and Dr. Miller for hiring Coach Joe Moorhead. You have renewed my faith in the program and I cannot wait to see the results. Please change all of our sports back to the "Z" Logo. When we had them they were considered one of the best and unique uniforms in the NCAA. Hopefully this post will get enough likes to show you it is what the fans want.

These would be some nice targets from the Transfer portal. With all these coaching changes going on this list will get larger.
Notre Dame (I bet this will be growing)
There is a big turnaround in there somewhere 😁
