I don't miss getting tear gassed!

I haven't seen a 50 ft bonfire since what, '96 May Day.

OK, I am in no way a stats man, but I really don't know what to expect from Buffalo. Did a little research, nosed around on their board, here are some thoughs. First of all, it looks like they ditched their starting QB and went with some freshman, yea, I guess they split time between 2 freshman, against UCF. Apparently everyone is very happy with them. From the talk on the Buffalo Board, I'm guessing the freshman Moore will start this week. I don't know if their passing performance against UCF will yield much insight as to how good these guys are, they only made 7 attemps with 5 completions. It could be REAL interesting if one of these Freshman QB's is hot with the pass. Just from looking at the stats and reading some posts, they are primarily a running team. I hope the same D shows up for this game as the Can't game. We seemed to do a pretty good job at containing Cribbs and the Can't running game so hopefully we will have success this week. With the new QB's, the passing game is probably a big ? Like I said, if the QB is hot, could add a whole other dimension to their offense. I don't have a good idea about their D but I would guess that we should have about the same success as the Can't game. They are giving up about 200 ypg on the ground and about 180 through the air. Might be a good game for Biggs, and hopefully Frye can put up more than 180. Anyway, for what it's worth, I'm just trying to get a fix on our opponent. In years past I would have just shown up and expected a rout. Not this season. Anyway, if anyone cares, here are some of the stats. Buffalo Stats Oh yea, one more thing, while listening to the game on Web Radio last week (through NIU) it sounded like Ringer got a LOT of carries early. Was Biggs hurt or did the announcers just botch that up?

Please Elaborate on Javon for those of us who didn't listen to the show.

Wow, lots of confident Buffalo fans here this week. I guess that means we'll see them at the game. Good, since they travel so well we should have about 20,000 at the bowl this week. See you at the game!

Yea, I'd have to say that I hate UCF the most by far.....just their attitude from day one. I don't think Marshall has ever been overly cocky, we just hate them cause they win all the time. Can't, (I'll probably get shelled for this one) they are in the same boat as UA, at least for football, I've gotta say that I hope they win whenever they aren't playing the Zips. OU is doing much better than I expected and though I don't expect them to win the East, (but I do hope they win this weekend ) I doubt that the Zips will be favored when they visit Athens. The "First Down" song is essentially the end of their fight song. I can't believe I acutally spent the time to torture myself to find it. This is like nails on a chalkboard to me!

To start off, this is probably the best team ever fielded by UA in shooting. I think we've got an excellent chance at making the NCAA Championships and as you will see, the underclassman are VERY competitive. We're STACKED and DEEP. I think we may be entering the golden years of Zips Rifle! Now, some details, the way we used to shoot, back in my day, was to shoot Either 60 shots or 120 shots in smallbore (.22 Rifle) and then shoot 40 shots in Air Rifle (Pellet Guns). Things changed this year with smallbore getting a maximum of 60 shots and Air Rifle increasing to 60 shots. This is a BONUS for UA, we've historically been stronger in Air Rifle. Now, onto the press release. Date: October 2, 2004 Location: Virginia Military Institute in Lexington Virginia Event: VMI Invitational Akron Rifle opens season as leader of the Pack The Zips sharpshooters traveled to Lexington Virginia to open the rifle season at the Virginia Military Institute invitational rifle match. Fielding two teams this season, the Zips managed to capture the first and second place in the four college tournament. In smallbore the Akron squads dominated the competition with outstanding performances by Junior Angie Engle (576) and Senior team captain Joe Milano (569) capturing first and second individual awards. “Joe and Angie have been working very hard at practice in preparation for this match.†States head coach Newt Engle, “This is a good example of how hard work will pay off.†Not to be overshadowed by their teammates, three new freshman, Martha Carpenter, Stephanie Elmore and April Engle all posted exceptional scores which contributed to this stellar performance. As if the impressive smallbore performance was not enough, the Air Rifle competition was all Akron. Freshman sensation Shannon Kohatsu earned the top individual spot with her impressive 573. Teammates Angie Engle (572), Sarah Kramer (570) and Stephanie Elmore (569) closely followed in the next three slots. And to show the depth of this impressive team, the Akron Blue team, made up mostly of freshmen, managed to best the Gold team by a slim two points. “Every coach dreams of the athlete who will perform better under match pressure than at practice,†states coach Engle, “This exactly what Shannon proved to me and most importantly, to herself.†But now the team must shift gears to pick up speed heading towards October 16 when the Zips will hold their first home match against a very powerful US Naval Academy team. Coach Engle states, “Navy is one of the best teams in the nation and we have a lot to accomplish over the next two weeks in order to be ready for them.†The match will start at 9am at the University Range located in room 7 of Shrank Hall South. Smallbore Rifle Scores: *Gold team, ** Blue team 576* Angela Engle 569* Joe Milano 564* Sarah Kramer 561** Laura Kuntz 557** Martha Carpenter 557** Tom Colston 554* Stephanie Elmore 545** April Engle 2263 Akron “Goldâ€Smallbore Team Total 2220 Akron “Blueâ€Smallbore Team Total ================================================================================ ====================== Air Rifle Individual Scores: *Gold team, ** Blue team 573** Shannon Kohatsu 572* Angela Engle 570* Sarah Kramer 569** Stephanie Elmore 568* Joe Milano 568** Christine Fortunato 566 Laura Kuntz 566** Martha Carpenter 564* Tom Colston 559 April Engle 2274 Akron “Goldâ€Air Rifle Team Total 2276 Akron “Blueâ€Air Rifle Team Total ================================================================================ ===================== Team Results: #1. 4537 The University of Akron “Gold†2263 + 2276 = 4537 #2. 4496 The University of Akron “Blue†2220 + 2274 = 4496 #3. 4465 North Carolina State University 2229 + 2236 = 4465 #4. 4251 Virginia Military Institute 2143 + 2108 = 4251 #5. 3622 John Jay College NY 1719 + 1903 = 3622

Got to love that C-USA power FUC being last in the MAC. My MAC Comments this week, no order: Damn, I wish Miami would have taken Marshall again. Don't want to see them go out on top. Can't State - Like they said, a team that just can't win. Too bad, better than their record. CMU - I have a feeling that Kelley is going to turn this team around bigtime. I think they pulled off a upset against Can't State. Lookout for these guys in the future. Toledo - About time you beat somebody up. They are the biggest letdown in the MAC. I think that BSU probably had an off day too. BG - Can't believe that NIU beat them that bad. We'll be chasing these guys for a while. NIU - Should be in CUSA instead of UCF. Glad they aren't. OU - WTF. These guys are having a breakout year. I think we're in trouble. Buffalo - I LOVE THAT THESE GUYS DELIVERED THE SMACK TO UCF. I HATE UCF. Eastern - I didn't think that a hometown coach was a good idea. They might keep us off the ESPN Bottom ten, this week. (yea the Zips were already on it once this year ) Western - THANK GOD that they are finally getting payback for every time they play that damn song when they get a first down! Just my 2 cents.

My take on Frye is this. I have to say that he is on Par with Pennington, Leftwich, or Rothlesberger. Look at these guys and the teams they played on, they got to Bowl games because they were an overall SOLID team. Frye has been surrounded by Average to below average talent (with some exceptions) for the past couple years. If you were to plug him into any major program, he would light it up. He has been running for his life the entire time, more so this year. GP1 is right that Frye hasn't been perfect, who is? He's made some bad passes when it was crutial, but that is going to happen when you make 99% of the big plays. Outside of Frye, there haven't been a lot of guys who step up and make the big play when it's needed. Also, the opposing teams know he's the man, the only man at UA so he's got a price on his head every game. Finally, I can't make too many comments on his long ball because I haven't really seen him throw one too many times this year. When he does, he's scrambling for his life. Bottom line is this. He's been under pressure the entire time he's been at UA. He's put up amazing numbers and is challenging the best in MAC history despite playing on a crappy team and not seeing any Bowl games. I'll tell you what, I can't wait to see what he does next year when he isn't looking over his shoulder every play. One more thing, I think that Zack Derr was outstanding. It would have been nice to see what he could have done if he had a shot in the NFL. Is he playing anywhere?

Well, right now Buffalo, UCF, and Ball State are licking their chops seeing that they've got to play Akron. I'd say that we are on level ground at best with all three teams and I'll be like a kid in a candy store if we're at 4-4 the evening of Oct. 23rd. Buffalo: This game will be just like the MTSU game. We probably "Should" win this game, but I'm only saying that because it's at our place. If this game was in Buffalo, wouldn't be pretty. Lets hope for good weather and a good crowd, the team will need all the help they can get. UCF: I hate UCF more than any other MAC team. I'm so glad to see them getting it handed to them by the "Bottom Feeders" over the past two seasons. I just hope that they are so demoralized that they just expect to lose. I kinda think this was the case last season. They've got the home field advantage,... bad. Ball State: They put 41 points on Western...Glad we've got them at home. If they skunk Eastern, we're in trouble. We'll need a two game winning streak and the associated momentum to take them at home. We come out of the next three games with a minimum of one win. I think we'll get two. Three might be a lot to ask for. I sure hope that there is a fire under some asses this week. Lets Go ZIPS!!!

IF YOU WERE THE AD FOR AKRON U WHAT WOULD YOU DO??
Zipsrifle replied to a topic in Akron Zips Football
No way Thomas lets JD go right now. I'm just extremely discouraged, probably because of the pre-season hype. THAT, is a good thing! I'm a skeptical person and it tells me that the UA Marketing dept. has done a good job. Honestly, if they didn't run the Heisman campaign, I wouldn't have been nearly as excited. Lets look at what got LO fired in the first place. We had one of, if not the easiest schedule in D1-A last year. If we were to play last seasons schedule, right now I'm confident we would have the same record as we did last year at this time, 3-2. Though, we might not have the same margin of victory. I think that L. Corso is right, we've stunk for some time now and just didn't realize it. We all knew that this year would be rough, and I think we're just one loss behind where I expected us to be. The difference for me is how badly we've lost. Now the next 3 weeks are going to be rough. No walks in the park this year...we're one of those teams that everyone is going to think "Thank GOD we've got Akron this week". At least we'll have home field advantage for 2 of the games. JD, for his own sake, has got to get the team modivated to win these games. If we lose to Buffalo, JD is going to have a VERY hard time getting taleted players in here. We've got to knock off Buffalo this week and UCF the next week to prove that we are at least a "Good", Bad MAC team. If we become a "Bad", Bad MAC team, the recruits are going to see the writing on the wall and move along. I really think these next 3 weeks may be the most important in Akron's DI-A history. Like I said before, JD appears to be one of those Modivated, Successful people. He just always seems to come out on top. I still think he was the best person for the job. -
I'm listening to the game and it's 20-34 right now with Buffalo driving. I HOPE more than ANYTHING that UCF loses tonight. I REALLY hate UCF, more than any other MAC team. Their mouth about running the table when they entered the MAC pissed me off. I'm amazed that the announcers are saying that Buffalo is just an overall bigger team that UCF. TOUCHDOWN BUFFALO!! 41-20 Hey, CUSA, nice pickup in UCF! The Zips are going to have their hands full next week with Buffalo!
-
Yea, I feel bad for Frye. He could be a millionaire right now. I respect that he came back, but I REALLY hope that his decision doesn't mean he'll be sitting behind a desk somewhere next season.

Well, that us ugly. I would have thought we would have made more improvement since the UVA game. I didn't expect in any way to have NIU put in their 2nd team in the 3rd Q. Here are some of my thoughts. First half. Obviously we were on our heels right away with their first play going for a score. I actually had some hope of us making this a game when the score was 28-12 late in the first half. I mean, we put together two long drives that ended with TD's and it kinda looked like the D had stiffened up against NIU. I was thinking, well, take away the runback for a TD and the score would be 21-12, much better than I thought. It seemed like we were having some success running and some success passing. We were just about where I would have liked the team to be. I was thinking, if this keeps up, we might be in it by the end of the game. Then, we let them in the Endzone right before halftime. Second half. This was the same team that came out and played the 2nd half against Virginia. I missed the first 5 min of the 3rd Q, but it was apparent by then that the game was pretty much over. I'm kinda amazed that when NIU put their 2nd team in, that we didn't really start to move the ball. It sounded like we still had our starters in, but Frye was still running for his life. NIU is good, but I'm having a hard time believing that their backups are nearly as good as UVA's. This kinda reminds me of past years. We show some glimpses of putting it together, only to have things fall apart. I'm just down right frustrated right now. I really don't think that we should have been dismantled by NIU the way we were. It is very obvious right now that their are two levels of MAC play, and we're solidly in the lower level. I don't think there are any more "This week truely tells us where we stand for the rest of the year" statements....I have a pretty good idea of where we stand. Our only win came against Can't, who lost to CMU, who also sucks. I really hope the JD is the next Joe Novak. He's got a long way to go, but Novak was in a similar spot a few years ago. I think he is, the guy is really modivated and one of those people who always seems to find a way to succeed. We've had a rough schedule so far, we're entering a phase of the schedule where we should be in every game playing for the win over the next 3 weeks. I'm afraid to say it, I'm scared to death of Buffalo right now.
-
Well, honestly, I think that last week we had lady luck on our side. I'm not saying that we didn't play our hardest, but that game could have very easily gone the other way. I don't think Can't State was as good as they thought they were, and we made a step up in our play. This week, I don't see our D stopping their running attack. I was impressed with the way we contained Cribbs last week, but from what I saw NIU do to BGSU, I doubt we're going to stop that. I'm hoping to see an improvement in the D of about the same increment as last week. I think that is the trend right now and hopefully it will continue. I'm just hoping that our D can give them enough hassle to keep them from getting the score too high. On the other hand, I really think that it is about time to see a measurable increase in our offensive abilities. Unfortunately, I don't expect to see a big improvement in our running abilities. IMO, this was a key to JD's offensive attack and judging by the number of times he's tried running so far, he's put a lot of work into it. I'll just be happy with a consistent 2 YPC instead of this -ve yardage stuff. If we can get that when we need it on 3rd or 4th down, good enough. What I am actually a little disappointed in is how it appears the passing game has become stagnant. I know that Frye's finger is busted up, but he's going to need over 400 this week. I'm hoping that the pass protection is improved so we can start getting something more than a quick 2-3 yard pass. That is all we can seem to muster, too predictable. Also, the receivers also need to pull in some of those tough catches that Cherry, Sparks, and Irving would pull in last year. If we put the same product on the field as last week, it'll be a rough day. So, if we can continue to improve on D, and make a big step on the O, we'll give them a run. We need to have the O eat up the clock and SCORE in the Red Zone. I really think that we're not going to slow down their run. We've got to keep their O off the field as much as possible. We'll also need to minimize mistakes and maximize any opportunities that NIU gives us. Lets hope that Lady Luck followed us on the bus after the Can't State game last week. I'll be listening. I know it's a tall order, but I'm one of those damn optimistic people. If the Zips put it together, we win... Zips 42 NIU 38
-
Well put as always Cap'n. From looking at the NIU board, they are still a little wary of us. I'm not sure how good Southern Ill was, but they gave them a run for their money. I think in that game though NIU was probably looking past SIU to the Iowa State Game. Unfortunately for us, NIU plays FUC next and I don't think that makes them want to overlook anybody. Still, I think with continued improvement and some more luck, we could make it interesting. I agree that a win away at NIU would be HUGE! I expect to keep it reasonable (within 20 points), if we get blown out, I'll be disappointed. From what I saw of the NIU BG game last week, NIU has a hell of a Line and a stable of Backs. That spells trouble for us. But, last weeks Can't State game was encouraging...I honestly thought Cribbs would light us up for more yards. If there is any game for Frye and the Receivers to have a breakout game, this would be a good week. I'm not sure how good their pass defense is? It's too bad that the game is televised, but not in Michigan. Well, I guess the car will get cleaned again this weekend. It's amazing what a win, no matter how close, can make you feel a little better.

Not all teams are mixed. In fact, I believe that there are quite a few womens only teams as a way to meet the NCAA scholarship requirement. The interesting thing is that if there was a gender advantage, the women would have it. They typically are shorter and have wider hips which allow for a more stable standing position. Each competitive team is made up of 4 individuals. As to how big the overall team can get, I'm not sure. Since it is a non-revenue generating sport, economics are likely the limiting factor. There are several ways to get into the sport. I happened to have a high school that offered it as a sport. That has since been axed due to the Columbine incident. Others get involved through Scouting or other youth organizations. Then there are the individuals who start with the backing of their parents. In highschool, I competed in a statewide junior shooting program that was a mix of high schools, clubs, and individuals. Probably the nicest thing about the experience was shooting in matches against persons who are now on the US Olympic team. I'm sure that USA Shooting would have enough info to get someone interested started. Back in the day when I started at UA, there was a little recruiting, but the team was filled out with tryouts. I think that everyone on the team but one or two people were from Ohio. It looks like those days are over at UA. I attribute it to the steady improvement of the team over the past 5-10 years. As you can see, there is a bumper crop of experienced shooters from across the country this season. Some schools offer full scholarships and others offer none. I'm not that in tune with the team right now but I believe that they are offering scholarships to shooters, just not sure how many or what type. To finish off I would like to mention that this type of shooting is about 95% mental. It takes an entirely different mentality than any other sport. That is why I was good at it, I sure couldn't play basketball or football at a DI-A level. I would also say that it is probably the safest of all NCAA Sports, though I don't have any data to back this up.
-
Uh, this is the same stuff that is on gozips.com. I'd imagine that the person who is getting paid to compile all these stats is being paid by UA. Gozips.com is on the collegesports network. I'd imagine that they have to submit their reports to collegesports.

This invitational match will involve several universities from up and down the east coast. “The team has been practicing every day with a “this is our year†attitude,†states head coach Newt Engle. “With the experience of the returning veterans, and the energy of the new members, I would not even think of putting a limit on what these athletes will accomplish.†Last year the Zips finished as the #17 team in the USA as well as winning the rifle and air rifle championships in the 10 school Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference. In the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference, Akron took the #2 slot in the Master category behind a very talented Navy team. What has Coach Engle so excited that he can barely sit still, is he knows this is exactly where the team will START this season.

WOW, what a great game! Just got back to the homestead in Michigan after an AWESOME weekend. Read through everyones posts, here are my 2 cents. First of all, I love the fact that all the Can't State fans predicting a Zips stomping are eating their words. Two years, two huge crowds, two close battles with the visiting team winning. Glad to see that the kicking that beat us last year beat Can't this year. Was Mayleis the kicker last season? I tell you what, this rivalry is back in a big way and I wouldn't be at all suprised if the Bowl sells out next year. Second, Kudos to the D. They stepped up when they needed to. GREAT goal line stand. I was so F#@! suprised when they stopped them, I thought for sure they would score. Cribbs is a very slippery guy and he makes some amazing plays. I still don't know how he found a receiver AND completed the pass with about 4 Zips pulling him down. There were so many times I thought we had him and he slides out of it. I honestly thought he would burn us for more and if we can clean a few things up we would have won that game convincingly with the D. They took a big step forward Trs. night, but, IMO, there is still a lot of work to do. Can someone explain to me why we are diving at peoples feet? Common sense tells me that once you leave your feet diving, your direction can't change and you're done for the rest of the play. Cribbs would just jog around, and when our guys would dive, he'd jump over them and keep running. If you can't catch him, keep chasing him...if he turns around, there you are! PLEASE wrap up! Way too many times where we just ran into the guys. If we can't wrap up, Wolfe and NIU will Destory us. PLEASE TURN AROUND AND LOOK FOR THE BALL! WTF! I'm glad Can't couldn't catch cause we sure weren't going to try to intercept it. Finally, though we did actually win a close game, it was still WAY too reminicent of past games. When everyone was celebrating after Biggs TD, I told them that this was Akron and I won't celebrate till the clock says 0:00. The Can't kicker did an AWESOME job on the onside kicks, and everyone looked at me like I was psychic after they recovered the first one. JD did make his first move in breaking the last minute losing traditon, but we really need to learn to put a team away with less than 3:00 remaining. For the OL, I have to give them credit for making adjustments after halftime. I think that is the first time Biggs has seen green in front of him all year. Made some adjustments to the blocking too, at least they would actually get in front of someone blitzing instead of ignoring them. It's a step in the right direction, but we'll need a big improvement if we're going to hang with NIU. Frye still can't let plays develop and we're forced to do quick, short passes. Man I miss Cherry, Sparks & Irvin...I was spoiled with their hands the last few years. You just expect the receivers to come down with the ball 99% of the time. Biggs is the man, Ringer is on the bench. Glad to see him get the TD. Frye, Didn't know he hurt his hand, he's a trooper. I don't think his decision making as been up to par these past 2 games though. He's going to need some big games to beat the MAC records. Coaching staff, like I said before, took the first huge step in breaking the last minute losing tradition. I still don't understand the very predictable first down run up the middle though. I guess it's supposed to lull the D into playing the run on first down for later in the game. I just don't think 2nd and 10+ is where you want to be on every series. Enough with the nagging. Congrats on your first win. I think there will be many more to come. I'm very impressed with how prepared the team was for the game. You went into your arch rivals house, in front of a huge crowd as the underdog and came out on top. What a first win! We've got a long week to prepare to play a very impressive NIU team that looks to be the team to beat in the West. We're atop the East right now! I hope that we're still in contention by the time Miami and Marshall come into town and we're ready for them. Nice job guys, VERY important win. Way to keep Can't our BIAAAATCH!

Axme, Well, I just thought I'd liven up your board a little. Besides, I thought it was pretty funny and wanted to get under your skin a little, but didn't want to wait for you guys to migrate to our board.....worked nicely I'd say. -
Wow...29 hours before the Kent/Akron Kickoff
Zipsrifle replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yea, I can't believe that Hilltopper is not going to the game since it is on TV and parking. I'm driving 4 freaking hours to see the Zips knock off Can't State at Dix. I think you'll see a decent crowd. It's basically another home game. As for the 15,000 rule, I don't know how many people are actually aware of this. I know it is a big concern to me but the thought of a boycott didn't even cross my mind. People will show up because it'll be a good game. Now, here is the thing that gets me. The Can't fans are making it sound like we are in for a beating that Virginia couldn't even dish out. Since when did Can't become a top 25 contender? We know that we suck, but you guys suck too. Hell, you're 1-2 with your only win coming over a sorry unranked DI-AA team, Liberty. I know that you're saying, "Well, Rutgers beat Michigan State and we nearly beat them". HEY, Rutgers also lost to 15th ranked DI-AA New Hampshire...that tells me that Rutgers got lucky. Go ahead, extrapolate all you want as to how good you are. Oh, wait, you already did that, I should just go over to your site to see that. Hey, here's one you missed. Uh Oh, here we go....... DooLoo DooLoo DooLoo In the Mind of a Can't fan: So, theoretically, since we nearly beat Rutgers who beat Michigan State in football who's basketball team was National Champs in 2000...that means that Can't will be in the Final 4 in BB this year, AWESOME! Fade to black. Please, go ahead and think that you guys are going to walk over us. Like I said before, there was a similar feeling by us prior to the last Wagon Wheel game. Talk all the smack you want, but your still our bitches over the past 10 years. I know I was PISSED after last seasons loss and I'll bet the Zips players feel the same way. Your overconfidence can be beaten down by a few quick Fryesman scores. Our desire for revenge from last season will last the entire game. Finally, I love how we're getting bad mouthed by Can't fans for not having an active board....guess what, yours is just as bad....hypocrites. Yo, I'm out, See everyone at the game. GO ZIPS!!!! -
If your driving to the game, take note, won't be able to park at the Staduim. Can't State Game Parking
