  1. Why do I have a feeling of here we go again? Come on D. Stiffen UP!
  2. Did the Beacon really pick FUC, or were they just reporing the line? Yea, gozipsgo, you are totally right, it's not over in Zipland till that clock says 0:00. I told everyone that at the Can't game and they looked at me like I was psychic when they recovered the first onside kick.
  3. Fumble Recovery on the punt. Biggs a couple of nice runs. Frye to Basch for the TOUCHDOWN ZIPS! Way to make them pay! Went for 2, didn't get it, (heads up play calling) Zips 26, FUC 7.
  4. Wow, seems we are leaning on big plays so far this half. Swiger GOOD! 20-7 Zips. Come on D.
  5. Glad to have some other Zips here. I'm frustratingly trying to follow the game on the internet, with little luck. 40yd pass to Hixon! Lets go Zips, Punch it in!!
  6. I love talking to myself apparently. So far, it appears it is the Brett Biggs show, He's rushed 11 times and caught 4 passes, and accounts for over 1/2 of the first half yardage. Frye is 9-14. Defense appears to be doing pretty good as well. 8 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Unfortunately, the UCF is dominating the time of possession, 19:00 to 11:00. Lets hope that the D can stay stiff and we can put some more in the endzone. Lets Go ZIPS!
  7. ZIPS SCORE!!! 17-7 Akron!
  8. Damn, UCF Scored. 10-7 Zips.
  9. Zips up 10-0!!! Alright!
  10. Won't be the first time, or the last time I'll be wrong. Lets HOPE I'm wrong!
  11. WTF... Can't is ahead of Marshall at the Half!
  12. Well, this might be the first game in 2 years that I can't scam free web radio from the internet. Figures that UCF would be the school that does it, they must care more about money than expanding their fan base. I guess they've got to pay O'leary his huge salary. I think it is on gamecast somewhere though. I'll be over here during the game.
  13. Well, there is no doubt who Lee is rooting for. I don't know if UCF wins if this will be considered an upset. From most of what I've seen so far, UCF has been getting the nod. I just hope that the Zips keep improving. If they learned from last week, come into this game and make the next step in the learning process, it'll be close. No way the Zips walk away with this one....if anyone walks away, I'll be UCF. As always, I've got to give the nod to the Zips. Hope they play smart football and minimize the turnovers. Hope that Biggs has another good game, hope Jabari is healthy and that Charlie is 100%. If so, Central Florida might have to deal with Hurricane Charlie for a second time this year (I had to fit that one in somewhere! ) Zips 24, UCF 23
  14. After extensive research on this subject, here is my conclusion. Marshall will win this one handily.
  15. As you Requested: Zips officials don't want students to pay with fees By Katie Byard and David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal staff writers A consultant's plan to put a football stadium on the University of Akron campus has some good ideas, but university officials said there is no funding in place to move the project from the talking phase. ``Now we need an idea of how we might fund it and when it might be possible -- if at all,'' university spokesman Paul Herold said Wednesday. In March, ScheerGame Sports Development of Florida presented UA officials with a study proposing a $60 million stadium that could be built on the southern edge of the campus. The company said a large portion of the funding could come from student fees. UA officials, however, rejected the idea of using student fees and ``continue to explore financial feasibility'' for the idea, Herold said. The university for years has envisioned an on-campus site to replace the aging Rubber Bowl -- seven miles from the UA campus -- as the Zips' home stadium. ``We think it would be great for the students, alumni, Zips fans and the downtown community to have a stadium on campus,'' athletic director Mike Thomas said Wednesday. ``That's our goal.'' UA president Luis Proenza said officials need to pick up where the ScheerGame study left off by exploring various funding options. ScheerGame's ``idea was heavily predicated on student fees and we don't want to go there,'' he said. Students already are charged a facilities fee per credit hour (as much as $222.60 per semester) to pay off bond debt on the campus' new recreation center and new student center. They also have been hit with relatively big tuition hikes, which came in recent years as the state cut funding to higher education. An on-campus stadium would complete a makeover of the football facilities. The Zips are enjoying the luxury of a $12 million field house, complete with a full-length AstroPlay field. The team also can practice outside on a 120-yard field on campus. The 35,000-seat Rubber Bowl, a Works Progress Administration project completed in 1940, needs repairs and renovations estimated at more than $60 million to be brought up to ``modern standards,'' Herold said. In 1971, the city of Akron sold the Rubber Bowl to the University of Akron for $1. Based on an outline from the university, ScheerGame came up with two possible locations for a 20,000-seat, on-campus stadium: on the north side of Exchange Street, south of the new field house; and on the south side of Exchange, across from Lee Jackson Field. Proenza said the university has identified two other possible sites. He declined to be specific. ScheerGame didn't charge a fee for the study, Proenza said. The company was reimbursed $26,375 for travel and other expenses. He said the company completed the study with an eye toward being involved in the development if the project becomes a reality.
  16. Well, I guess if anything would get a Zips football player fired up right now, it would be having the Zips consistently picked to lose against the worst team (record wise) in college football. I understand that we're on the road and that UCF had an excellent 2nd half last week. Actually, I guess I prefer being the underdog. Just seems to take the wind out of their sail a little quicker if we can put up a few quick scores. Should be a battle. My ear will be glued to my computer. Lets go Zips, make it 3 wins in the last 4 games!
  17. Looks like UCF's top running back, Alex Haynes, is injured. I don't know how bad the injury is, sounds like it is his shoulder and he is questionable for the game this Saturday. He is apparently one of their best backs ever. He holds the record for the most carries and is only about 200 yds from holding the UCF record for most career yards. He is the 4th in the MAC in rushing this season also. I hate to see anyone get hurt, but I can't say I'll be disappointed if he doesn't play this Saturday. With one of the most pourous run Defenses in the country, we'll need all the help we can get. Hopefully he takes this week off and rests up, I want him to make a full recovery. 18. Isn't there a minimum requirement of a 30,000 seat stadium for D1-A? Hard to believe that they would put all this money into a state of the art fieldhouse and a new stadium only to botch up something like this. From the article, the statement is "20,000 permanent seats". Add in the presidents suite, lounge, and luxury boxes and my guess is that the total number of seats balloons to about 23,000. I guess they account for the other 7000 seats by sitting in the grass? Who wants to sit in the grass, especially if it's raining! What I am thinking is that the grass area will, in actuality, be seating. They just aren't pitching it at this time. Maybe they are waiting to see what comes of the 15,000 rule. If at the time of construction we are solidly a D1-A school, it becomes seating. If we are demoted to D1-AA, it stays grass. The other option is that they intend it to be 30,000 the whole time and are just keeping it cheap at this point to drum up local support. Bottom line, it needs to be designed intelligently, in case of future expansion. Looks like this is the case. If this program takes a serious up turn under JD, we may be needing 45,000 10 years from now. Don't want to have a patchwork stadium. I don't know if I like the proposal. I want a stadium that feels like we are playing college football and not high school. An enclosed endzone is, in my mind, a requirement! I'd like to see something closer to CMU and not Can't State. I already have a suggestion for a name.....Proenza Field. This guy is a GOD! Oh yea, think there is any room in there for a new Rifle Range?
  19. With Proenza's record, I think it'll happen. So, the big question is, can we rip the bleachers out of the Rubber Bowl after the last game?
  20. OK, here is my first shot at trying to figure out what happened during the UCF vs. NIU game. UCF 28 - NIU 30 They are a confusing team. Lets hope the bad UCF team shows up this Saturday. Like I said before, after UB Smoked UCF, I thought this week battle against UCF would be one for us to lose. Well, after what happend at UCF vs. NIU, I'm taking another look. First of all, UCF's attack was almost all passing. They had 272 yds through the air and only 51 on the ground. They have, for the most part, been stuffed with the run this season with their best game of just over 200 yds against Buffalo. They did have 170 yds against WV though. They have put up over 270 yards through the air for the past 2 weeks. I would guess that their passing attack has taken hold and I expect that they will be strong in this area. I seems to me that we've been challenged by mostly running attacks this season. I think that this weekend we'll be looking at an attack that consists mainly of passing, but with enough running to keep us honest. Could be the first BIG test for the Zips defensive backfield. My next thought is: did NIU call off the dogs after being up 21-0 after the first half? They were so kind against us, but did it give momentum to UCF last week? UCF's first score was an almost 70 yard pass play. Was this against 2nd team NIU defensive backs? Turnovers were a key in this (NIU) game. UCF held the advantage with 3 INT's and one was their 2nd TD. They (UCF) have averaged about 2 turnovers a game, but that includes an abysmal 6 turnovers against PSU. I'd say the two teams are probably pretty even here, and I think the Zips will have to win this battle to come away with a win against UCF. Finally, Novak said that NIU played a bad game. I don't know how much this accounts for but I guess we'll find out this Saturday. On the Zips side, I think that we might have another good rushing night this Saturday. UCF has consistently give up over 200 ypg in rushing. UCF did have their best Defensive outing against the rush against NIU though....and that is scary! I think that when we become one dimensional, we are in for a rough night. UCF is also giving up about 200 ypg through the air. I know that both of our wins have been with Frye injured. I'm hoping that he heals well this week, along with Jabari, and we can be more effective through the air. So, Right now, I think that UCF is going to be airing it out for most of the game. We need to continue to stiffen up against the rush. We had a good outing last week and need to keep the momentum up. We 've got to win the turnover battle and keep them from getting too many big plays throught he air. I'm looking for the Zips to come out with another balanced attack and hopefully a healthy Frye. He has yet to have a breakout game and it would be nice for one this week. Anyway, in the event anyone is interested, here are the main links I used to compare the stats. Looks like everyone in the MAC uses a common format. Akron Stats UCF Stats
  21. Man, if they would have panned out a little more, you could have seen me at the top of the goal post! Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we won, and by a big margin. But, I'm afraid the score might be a little misleading. Buffalo gave us a lot in this game and if it weren't for that it would have been much closer. This was a game the we should have won and if we lost, we would have been a laughing stock. I was extremely releaved when UB took out UCF last week. I thought, " great, we're going to have 3 games with teams that won't blow us out. If we have our ducks in a row, we should come out on top". Well, for week one I was right. But I don't know what UCF did but they scared the CRAP out of NIU, a team that handily beat us. I kinda think that UCF was overlooking Buffalo. Anyway, I think we've got a LOT of work to do if we're going to travel to Orlando and knock off FUC. We're going to need continued improvement if we are going to come out on top. FUC does, by the way, have the distinction of being the only D1-A team in the country without a win and also holds the longest losing streak. A loss to them will be a black eye for the Zips. They have faired much better in the games with similar competiton, with the exception of Buffalo. So, to sum it up all I can say is that when you're at the bottom, you don't have much time to celebrate. We've got to keep working hard and hope Charlie gets well this week. I think we're going to need him at his best.
  22. HOLY CRAP.....THE ABJ PROVIDED SOME INSIGHT!!!!! Was that a PIG just flying out of My ? Injured Frye makes big throws for Zips Akron QB passes for 202 yards, a pair of TDs By Terry Pluto The little finger on Charlie Frye's right hand doesn't look so little. Not with the swelling below his knuckle and the pinkie looking painful as it's bent awkwardly to the far right. ``It's been like that since the first play of the Can't game two weeks ago,'' said the University of Akron's star quarterback. ``I'm playing in a splint. It's not that bad, but once in a while, I throw a wobbler.'' Frye was superb in the Zips' decisive 44-21 victory over Buffalo before 7,123 at the Rubber Bowl on Saturday night. The final numbers show him with 13-of-23 passing for 202 yards and two touchdowns. It was even more. He completed passes of 21, 24, 30 and 51 yards to set up touchdowns. He rolled to his right on an option, taking a teeth-rattling hit, then pitched the ball back to Brett Biggs for one of the tailback's three touchdowns. He set up a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dennis Basch with an excellent fake handoff to a running back. He delivered a dart in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jason Montgomery. From watching the senior, you'd never guess that he didn't even practice until Thursday. ``The finger is still a little sore, and my shoulder got banged up last week at Northern (Illinois) so I rested a bit,'' he said. Getting sacked seven times in a physically punishing 49-19 loss will make a quarterback ache, and not just physically. ``There have been times when I've been frustrated,'' he said. ``But I've never second-guessed myself for coming back for my senior year. I still really want to play for Akron.'' Frye means what he says. ``He's steady, efficient, productive and accountable,'' Zips coach J.D. Brookhart said. ``He's a great decision-maker, and he's having a great season.'' So far this season, Frye has completed 66 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. Until Biggs broke loose for 165 yards Saturday, Frye had been doing it mostly without a consistent running attack and facing defenses determined to knock him out of the game with a variety of blitzes. Understand Frye is an NFL prospect. He was projected as a third-round pick if he had turned pro last spring. Instead, he returned to Akron knowing his top running back and four best receivers were gone. ``I've had people tell me that I was crazy to come back,'' he said. ``Now, I've had them tell me now that I should take a week or two off and really heal.'' Don't want to really get hurt and damage your draft status, right? ``That's not me,'' he said. ``Not for my senior year. I'm gonna play. I came back because I really love the guys on this team, and I want to be out there with them.'' It has not been easy. He has had to adjust to a new coach, as Brookhart took over for the fired Lee Owens. Add in a grueling early season schedule taking the Zips to Penn State, No. 12 Virginia and Mid-American Conference power Northern Illinois, and it's amazing Frye can walk without a cane. But he doesn't complain. He praises Brookhart and believes the coach is helping him grow. He talks about about how the offensive line is improving, adding, ``I'm taking all those guys to dinner.'' He see Biggs helping the running game. He's optimistic about his new receivers, especially Montgomery and Domenik Hixon. He raves about Jabari Arthur, a backup quarterback who also is a receiver. Arthur caught a 51-yard bomb from Frye early in the third quarter. ``He took all the snaps at practice this week because I was out,'' Frye said. ``Then he makes a play like that. He's really special. And he's a great guy. He has the fire. He's a lot like me.'' The Zips are 2-4 overall, but 2-1 in the MAC. Buffalo has lost 23 consecutive MAC road games, but the Bulls (1-5,1-3) did knock off Central Florida, 48-20, a week ago. Akron plays at Central Florida next Saturday. ``We can turn this around,'' he said. ``The schedule is breaking in our favor. I like how we're starting to play. I think we're going to be OK.'' When you hear those words from Frye, you know he really believes it.
  23. Great win! I was worried about this one. If you were to ask me how bad we'd beat UB at the beginning of the year, I'd say by at least 20. Now I would have also said that we would have beat MTSU, given PSU, NIU, a run and at least scored 21 against UVA. That didn't happen. Though we won by the margin I would have expected at the beginning of the season, I still don't think the team is quite to the point where it needs to be. Buffalo really helped us out this week with timely fumbles and penalties. It would have been a lot closer if they would have avoided those mistakes. I had a pretty good feeling that their run D would be pretty soft since UB opponents had run all over them the entire season. Lets hope that this experience give the OL an idea of what it means to open a hole for Biggs to run. We'll need it against UCF. Also glad to see more than 25, 3 yard pass out of Frye this week. I did notice that Frye was bailing out of the pocket probably a little too early. He had plenty of time this week and would start running anyway. He also missed some passes that he really should have nailed. I'm assuming that his finger is still giving him problems. Lets hope! On the defensive side of the ball I would like to see us come out at the beginning of the game and after halftime and not let the opposing team march down the field. I know that at the beginning we're feeling the other team out but after halftime we should know what to expect. We can't give up quick scores to UCF next weekend! The tackling appeared to be getting better but there were still quite a few times where we needed to wrap up. On the pass coverage at least we were turning around and finding the ball. Oh, and we've GOT to catch the INT when it hits you in the numbers! Glad to see the pocket collapsing around the opposing QB and outside of a few runs, we were doing a decent job of shutting down their run game. We at least held them to an average running day. I'm having a hard time believing there were less than 8,000 people at the game last night. I guessed about 12,000. I also didn't expect UCF to give NIU that much trouble! I have a feeling that there was probably a little overlooking of Buffalo to concentrate on the NIU game and it bit them. We're going to have our hands full next weekend. Lets hope that they implode for us like they did against UB. If not, could be another long day listening on web Radio.
  24. Anyone have any info on Frye's finger? Did he get it busted up any more last week or was he spared for the most part? Will he be at 100% this week?
  25. Actually, we were talking about the previous era at UA. But, if the new era is like this too, I'm glad to see the students reviving old traditions!
