ABJ Article - Good Stuff!
Zipsrifle replied to Johnny Utah's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
You know, it would be interesting if someone started to jot down all the times the Mid-Major schools get screwed by the NCAA and wrote a book about it. -
When I was in school a decade ago, one of my best professors was a BME professor. I think she was involved in prosthetics, but honestly I can't remember. I'm an ME BTW.
-
Yea, I just stumbled across this:http://www.reuters.com/article/pressReleas...008+PNW20080117Looks like Mack should be there taking notes.
-
It would be nice if someone could take a picture of Lee Jackson Field right about now to see the field condition. Hopefully they have continued to work on it anticipating another home game later this week. Wouldn't it be interesting if the field was in good shape tomorrow and the game at NW had to be delayed because of field conditions? BTW, it looks like rain most of the day tomorrow in Akron.

I voted no, but here's why. Is I've mentioned before, I think JD took some BIG risks to try to get in and out of Akron as fast as possible. Now, though he hasn't totally reformed from his risky ways, he's been more conservative with bringing in players that will at least see the field for one season (two may be pushing it). I think that one season will be next year and with the new stadium, we will have some success. Enough success that he will jump ship to any offer that comes around. With this success, and facilities, I'm hoping we can pull in another quality coach who can continue building the team.I am far from happy with JD, but I think a disaster opening season at ICS is too much of a risk. I think we have some good athletes next season which were recruited for this system, and we will peak next season. Next season we must be MAC E Champs and a Bowl and nothing less! With that said, I really don't care either way what the AD does this year.

Lose 3 to end the season....
Zipsrifle replied to ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net's topic in Akron Zips Football
Honestly, I wasn't very excited going into the season. The excitement was slowly building, however, as the Zips were competitive against BSU and narrowly lost to Cincinnati. After BGSU, the only thing that kept me intersted was the chance we may win the East. When we blew it against Buffalo, that pretty much did it for me. 1) It is no secret that I think JD sees Akron as a stepping stone and nothing more. With that said, I think the AD will bring JD back...but next year is his make or break year. We must be in the MACC and go to a bowl, period. We are all aware we could have been 10-2 this year or we could have been 3-9. No more excuses next year.2) I think we'll be better on D next year, but ditch the 3-3-5.3) Rogers should at least be given a shot to start next year. I think he will, but JD is simply being PC. 4) I will be very, very stoked to walk through those gates on gameday. What I hope and pray for is that the opening ceremonies aren't as bush league as the closing ceremonies for the RB. If we put this much money into a new stadium, we better act Big Time!5) Kennedy, no question. He's the man! I just hope the fumbles against Buffalo don't haunt him.6) Bruce. That guy couldn't catch anything. Bowser at least made a few very difficult and critical catches. BW is probably second but at least a few of his hits made me smile. -
So, if this is an Akron Home Match, why do the students need to pay for a ticket? Will they be allowed to stand behind the goals? Will they be able to post banners supporting the Zips? My guess is NO.
-
That was a very good article IMO. I also think the Turkey shoot is a great way to help people understand what shooting is all about.

The Larger Problem At Hand
Zipsrifle replied to tbozeglav's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Excellent points by all. Now, I continue to wonder, why wasn't ICS sized so that we could play soccer there? To my understanding, the field isn't big enough to allow for a soccer field. That would have eliminated at least part of this discussion. -
Unfortunately folks, we were warned about this weeks ago. I smell a ratWe were snubbed during the selection by having MSU picked over us, which meant we were "supposed" to go to East Lansing. Now that that isn't going to happen, they find an excuse to move the game to our opponents home field. The sad part is that nothing will come of this. If it were to happen to another school, 90min South, the TV airwaves would be lit up and it would be front page news at every news paper. We'll be lucky if the news coverage goes past Rasor's blog. What I do like is how Rasor mentioned that even if we do play at their field, it will benefit us as apparently that suits our style of play. Also, we aren't the #4 team in the country for nothing. I really am pissed about this, and I don't know the first thing about soccer. I really, really hope the AKROWDIES don't let this discourage them from attending. I hope the AD gets a few busses and ships them to Ill so that they can have an impact on the game. The sad part is that I was actually planning earlier this evening to go to the game on Sunday in Akron...my first Akron soccer match since I was in school.....thanks NCAA!

The next paragraph reads:If the home team's regular field is not able to be played upon, they can choose another suitable field in to play, unless,it is Akron in the NCAA tourney. In such an event, we the opposing team will automatically have it's seeding changed to be 1/2 below that of Akron to follow the rules detailed above. Actually, I know a way around this. Why don't we just use eminent domain to take over the SVSM field and declare it OUR field!
-
Looking at some of those pictures of the SVSM field, I think we should play all our games there. That field looks really nice and the view of downtown is KILLER! I just don't understand why we don't play the next game there!?!
-
You should have filled it with that flag! Seriously, though, that must have felt great to look at those guys after the goal.
-
You know, I'm not suprised by this. After all of the injustice that has happened to us in the past, this should be expected. The Big Ten is one of the major confrences that pays the bills of the NCAA. In return, the Big 11 has 5 teams (almost 1/2) of their confrence in the tournament. The seeding was obviously set up to allow for the Big 11 to have at least one, team in the field of 8 and that is now guaranteed to happen. Of course, two would be even better and that is why this is happening. The Big 11 is simply being rewarded and the MAC has no recourse. Money talks Bull$#!+ walks. Besides, Northwestern was unseeded going into this thing which is obviously lower than #4! Oh, and don't think the officiating is going to be even handed from here on out either. The WORST thing that could happen for the NCAA is for a MAC school to win the whole thing!!
-
Well, it would appear then that there is more behind moving this to CSU than simply picking one program over the other. I have a feeling that this will be a wake-up call and Dr. P will make sure UA has it's nose in ANY venture between Akron hospitals and university research in the future.
-
Ziprifle, what do you mean by this? Are you referring to a possible UA Medical School w/ a UA Hospital?I'm referring to the fact that the CSU BioEng dept nailed down the deal with AGMC and UA didn't. You would think that UA would have an edge just because of the Engineering Dept. reputation and the location. Now, I don't know squat about how the UA BioEng compares to the CSU BioEng, but I know that UA Eng. as a whole is more respected than CSU.
-
I would just like to beat Can't this year! Hopefully, in the MACC game!
-
Go to the Live Chat in the upper right corner for the in game disussion. It's much better.
-
What happened to you guys this year? You should have beat OSU in Columbus! Have there been injuries? It's like a WWI infirmary. We lost our QB in Columbus, our first and second string halfbacks, fullback's been out all year, TE out, receivers have been out, both lines decimated. But the killer has been penalties and mental mistakes, which injuries don't account for. These guys are good at finding ways to lose.So what happens when we go into OT and both teams keep fumbling the ball or throwing INT's trying to give the game away???
-
Congrats Bulls, I think they deserve to win the East.
-
Two thoughts on this.1) There are a lot of people in Cleveland pushing to solidify that town as the Medical Hub. This is one of the early battles for where NEOCOM will be located. They aren't about to let UofA win out over CSU and IMO, this is a huge coup for them. 2) I think some of the folks at UofA need to take some heat for not putting together an air tight case for a hometown hospital.

Brian Kelly Top Choice for Tennessee?
Zipsrifle replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Kelly rubs me the wrong way too. But I don't think he left CMU before the bowl game. In fact, I'm pretty sure he not only was the head coach of CMU when they won the Motor City Bowl that year, he ALSO went on to lead UC to an International Bowl win a few weeks later. This gave him the odd distinction of leading two teams to bowl wins in the same season. This seems pretty fitting for his apparent ego. The SEC East is about as tough as it gets. Perhaps the Peter Principle will kick in, but I'm not sure I'd bet against that arrogant guy.Well, I guess I wasn't aware of that Cincy went to a bowl that year, but I know he ditched CMU before their bowl. I used to live near Flint, Mi and believe me, I heard all about it! Reagdless, I think that guy is a prick! -

Zipsrifle replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
I hate that guy. I just can't imagine leaving your team that you built up (CMU) before their bowl game to take over at a school that isn't going to a bowl. Was it really that urgent to leave a few weeks early??? Apparently it was. Seriously though, I don't think JD is going anywhere. We haven't beaten any solid teams, and the fact that we almost beat Cincy indicates to me that they aren't that good of a team. I think BK is just a case of being in the right place at the right time. Unless things seriously tank for the Zips, JD knows his job here is solid and also knows that nobody is gonna be looking to hire him as we can't beat a quality team. I hope whatever team BK is coaching next year gets waxed all season long! -
Hey, I have an idea to improve attendance. Why don't we stop whoring ourselves out to the MAC and stop playing games on a weeknight! Hardly anybody tailgating, people have to rush from work in Cleveland, Elyria, Etc. to get to the game and then get home at 1:30 or 2:00 AM. Fans from the other school (Unless its Can't) won't come to the game because they can't take 3 days off work to follow their football team. I'm really sick and tired of the MAC office forcing us to play these games for "National Exposure" when in reality all it does is give the bars across the country some background noise and SCREW the few diehard fans of the MAC.

Honestly, I think last night's game was a very fitting end to the RB and basically summed up my experiences in the old girl. I heard things last night from the crowd that I haven't heard in years. Normally, I'm the one yelling trying to get everyone else into it. Last night, I heard the cheers spontaneously erupt from other parts of the stadium yet in the 4th OT, I heard the dead silence I am so accustomed to. My view at one point was blocked by other fans standing up and cheering as Kennedy broke away!...but in the 4th Q, I had my usual 4-5 clear rows directly in front of me. I saw lots of blown catches, blown passes, blown tackles, and busted running plays, yet the Zips, somehow, were fighting to the end. I felt extremely proud when the entire stadium gave a standing ovation to that soldier who went through hell and somehow made it out of Iraq. I also felt that all to familiar pit in my stomach as the ball squirted out in the 4th OT and a Buffalo player pounced on it. I was impressed as the crowd continued to file into the RB late into the 1st Q and I stood almost alone as Zippy rode out of the stadium on a motorcycle. An excellent closing ceremonies concept was botched up as the former players were walked all over the field before finally forming a simple U shape. The speeches given, with the exception of Dr. P seemed unrehearsed and frankly, Mack sounded Drunk! I guess this meshes well with Dennis Helsel's "Syracuse University" speech. I never did get to see a sold out game at the RB in my 15 years of attending games there....... I don't think I'll miss the RB. It served well and I have a lot of memories there, but I can't remember a game when I truly felt that Akron had arrived. We were never "Bigtime" in the RB. I'm hoping that ICS marks a turning point for Akron football and our first step into the "Bigtime".
