How would you rate the Akron football student sect
Zipsrifle replied to IBleedMACGreen's topic in Akron Zips Football
I voted "Lots of students, not really into the game". The AK-Rowdies were trying to get people up and cheering last game, but nobody really piped up. One of the Rowdies actually had pop thrown at him because he wouldn't move off the rail and go sit down in the stands. Turns into a social event in the 3rd Q too. But, the number of students appears to be significantly more than in the past 10 years and the AK Rowdies definately make a difference. -
Zips up 2-0 20 min into game
Zipsrifle replied to AK-Zips's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
11-0! That's AWESOME! Can anyone give me an idea of what constitutes a blowout in soccer? My guess is that 3-0 isn't a blowout, but probably beyond a solid win AND against the #20 team in the country. How common are undefeated seasons in college soccer? How common is it to have 0 ties? Keep up the good work Soccer team! Go Zips! -
I also think Miami is out, but what I'm more concerned with is the Zips building some momentum so that when we hit Miami we're ready to give them their 3rd loss. We've got to focus one at a time on each game and build a head of steam so that when we hit BG, we have a chance. (I think I just contradicted myself )

Can't seem to get the success of the soccer team out of my head. Here are some of the things bouncing around in my brain pan, so feel free to help out someone who isn't very knowledgeable in soccer. 1) What does 2000 people look like at Lee Jackson? The upgrade to the stands was for 1000, but it seems like that is too small now. Anybody got pictures. 2) What is the capacity at Lee Jackson? 3) Is Lee Jackson considered a "Big" college soccer stadium? 4) Does anyone think they'll make provisions for Soccer to use the new stadium if it gets built? 5) Lolla has built a nationally recognized and respected program. Does he get any bonuses like the football coach does if he achieves specific goals? 6) Didn't Lolla just sign a new contract? How long is that contract? 7) When is the recruiting season? What is Akron's recruiting region? Have we been making big scores lately with recruits? 8) Do we have an experienced team or a young team? Bush is a RF goalie, but what about everyone else? I think that UA really has something great going on here and needs to capitalize on it. Sure, they are throwing money everywhere right now, but I wouldn't mind if more went to this program because of it's history of success. I'm just flat out amazed they pulled in 2000+ fans against OSU and think it would be a great idea to do whatever is necessary to keep UA at the top.

Buffalo scares the crap out of me. They played us too tough at home two years ago. I think it'll be really close, but new attitude Zips win 35-31.
-
When will we learn that outside of our little chat rooms, and the MAC Athletics office, nobody will post anything that even comes close to making sense about the MAC. They've got to put out a product, and 99.998732% of fans won't notice anyway.

I have to say that I believe the maximum number of fans in increasing. They don't fully arrive till the end of the first, and leave near the end of the third, but at least there are more fans at the height. I could be wrong though, blocking off the end zone kinda packs everyone in and gives the illusion that there are more fans there. Another indication I have that fan support is growing is that the number of new posters here seems to have spiked. It is a bummer when people flame on the board, but isn't that kinda why this board is here, for people to bounce around their thoughts on the team? People can say I'm a crappy fan, but I don't see a packed visitors section at the away games. There will always be one fan pissed and one fan who think's we would knock off USC if we played them tomorrow. If the players read this then they are getting a good idea of what the hardcore fans really think, unfiltered. In the end, I can't play football (I picked a sport that required the LEAST amount of physical activity remember) so it shouldn't matter to the players. Most of us are out of college anyway and even more would be out of work for a week if we played one down out there. I'm done with this thread now. Lets move on to UB.

I'm just as frustrated as everyone else about the fan situation. Up to the point last game when it was essentially over, the students were hanging around in greater numbers than they did in the past. I really think one of the problems is that the stadium is so far from campus. Evidence: My wife overheard one of the students who must be at the game say something similar to this very shortly after the game was over "Lets hurry up and get out of here, the kegs open in 5 min." The students are ready to party on Sat. and by 9:00 are ready to leave for one. So it appears we have a conflict. Nobody will come to the games at 1:00 because of OUS, but the students leave at 9:00 to party. An on campus stadium will help, but winning will help more.

Any Akron team that is contending for a National Championship gets serious respect from me. Not many people noticed the Engineering SAE teams when the were winning. But when UA tops 110 other engineering programs, that's a big deal. Though I'm not a soccer fan, if I lived near Akron, their success would have me attending games. IMO, Soccer will continue to grow and though some here might not like it, eclipse Baseball as the #3 sport. If this is the case, then Akron has been in on the ground floor for a while and will only reap the benefits for years to come.

Didn't miss that. MTSU fan were a class act and I'm glad to see them have something to be excited about. Hopefully they go on a tear the rest of the season.
-
There is about a 50-50 chance I'll be heading to the game. I'll be sure to take pics if I go, but they'll be rather large files.

Well Done! How appropriate!

What constitutes a blowout in soccer? Man I wish I lived closer to Akron!
-
Yea, Right. Come sit by the student section and I'll ask you this question later this month. I am with everyone here, what the hell is going on with "The sky is falling" crap! If we won last night, we would have been off to our best start in 15 YEARS!!!!!!! Attendance won't improve until we are really on a roll, for this season that means we are 7-2 going into the BG game (Sounds like Army will be a big draw regardless). Now, if we lose next week, then I'll start carrying my umbrella on sunny days.

This one needs to go in the Hall of fame! OK, just back from Ohio. I think GP1 said just about everything for me. I'm going to add that I just think Akron fans are now back to having to deal with an average MAC QB. Butchie and Charlie were really outstanding and have spoiled us for nearly a decade. Getsy sucked last night, but he just doesn't have the composure of vision that Charlie had while running for his life. Key words here are "RUNNING FOR HIS LIFE". Seems to me that when he got flustered, he made bad decisions, hell I would. I put the blame squarely on the OL. We couldn't run the ball (Or didn't try) and Getsy was always under pressure. After 4 games it seems to me that Luke needs to get warmed up and get some confidence. JD did a good job at this at the beginning of the game, but when things started falling apart, so did Luke. Why the hell don't we ever throw over the middle? Probably because if Getsy misses it'll be a interception or Hixon will be out for the year. They know we're going to throw on the outside or to Biggs! Kasparek and Jabari Haven't shown me a whole lot. Kaspareck is big, but he's slow and I don't remember any great catches. If Jabari is part of putting the "Best 11 players on the field" then we really do lack depth. Come ON Jabari, turn it ON, I know you've got the talent! Both are still young and hopefully they'll learn a lot this year. I can't complain about the D......they are better than they were in the past. I really think the lack of depth is huring us. We can get NO pressure on the QB in the 2nd half. I'm suprised at the attitude on the board already. Hell, we're 2-2 with a win over NIU and MTSU. I figured we'd be at 1-3. I've been very impressed with the team except for last night. I think this may be a much needed wake up call for a young team. If we go into Buffalo next week playing like this, then I'll be ready to start screaming. If we were going to contend this year, then we should have blown CMU out of the water. We may have shaken off a lot of the LO legacy, but we still seem to be playing to the level of our competiton regardless of how good they are. We need to see how we bounce back against Buffalo. Need a big blowout to build confidence if we are going to have a chance in Oxford!
-
AMEN! Now, if we can get the crowd to actually clap and sing the words! Anybody seen 111,000 people singing "Hail to the Victors!".....AWESOME! As pathetic as this sounds, they need to put the words to the fight song up on the board.

Predict Akron vs. Central Michigan score!!
Zipsrifle replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
You would think that living near Flint I would hear TONS about CMU.....WRONG. I don't know anything about them. I won't make a score prediction about the game, but feel the Zips should win. I still don't think we are in any position to overlook ANYONE! JD will have the guys ready, we just need to continue improving. Totally agree Cap'n. Too bad to hear some of the NIU fans were given crap after the game. We need to go out of our way to make the opposing fans feel at home. -
Akron when they were 1AA did they get respect?
Zipsrifle replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
All I know is if we beat them in '07, I'm going to get my ass kicked walking out of the stadium because I won't be able to stop running my mouth. -
Yea, it wasn't really a rallying point at the game. They just sounded it during kickoffs. I don't understand how that is supposed to get people fired up. There were pleanty of times in the 4th Quarter that they should have used it IMO, but they didn't. How is it that the athletics department creates this new whistle, tells the fans it will signal a rallying point and will only be used when necessary, and then blows it at totally inappropriate times? It seems like a pretty simple concept to me.

Predict Akron vs. Central Michigan score!!
Zipsrifle replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
WOW 20 TD's and one blocked extra point that Rohr throws into the endozone for a 2 point conversion! -
WOW  the soccer team is on a tear! Anytime we play OSU, I hope we win. This is probably one of the few times we would be favored against the Buttguys (Rife is another time ) so lets make the most of it. It would be nice to blow them away.....what is a blowout in soccer anyway?
-
As long as we're complaining, those ref's sucked! Though we eventually got a TD, there was VERY noticable pass interference early in the game right in front of the ref that he overlooked. Did anyone else pick up on the Zips running play in the 4th that took no time of the clock? Also late in the game, and NIU receiver was tackled in bounds and then slid out of bounds, and of course, the clock was stopped.
-
CK is right, I think we just got everyone's attention in the MAC. I think we've got a legitimate shot at the MAC East Championship. One game at a time though. JD will have the boys ready for CMU.

I remember one seriouis flaw in why the first game last season had 17,000...wasn't it BAND DAY!? No band day last week so 13,000 was pretty good! Uh, not all that section was students. My group was sitting in the student section because the other old people don't like to cheer. I'm starting my own Alumni group....the AK-OLDIES! BTW...we're moving our seats for the next game. You would never know that NIU scored 21 points in the 4th because the student section became a social event, nobody was paying attention to the game. Can't say I would have done anything different when I was in school though.
