  1. Good idea, I would love to hear KD talk a little X's and O's. Break down one or two plays a week and tell me why it went right and what he was trying to do. Chalk talk, Coach's Corner, KD on D. I would email Joe directly to suggest that, but don't see an email. Anyone know where to send comments to? I guess you could send them to STO and hope they make it to Joe.

Joe Dunn bleeds blue and gold, so its no surprise that he is a total homer for the Zips. I will give him a call today and pass on the suggestions from the good members of ZN.O for improvements to the program. I'm sure if they are feasible he would make whatever changes necessary to get more viewers.

  2. I rarely go to the basketball games because the venue is so poor. I can't stand spending the money on tickets and then having your view blocked by a rail or people walking the track.

When the JAR first opened there was no metal railing at the top of the glass wall surrounding the lower level. It wasn't until later that year or the next year that someone from the university or the city decided that the metal cap had to be installed for what ever reason. Take away the metal cap on the glass and the site lines from the upper deck are much better.

  3. It is a different grad degree. Bio-statistics. Medicine statistics. It has always been about the schooling. I want to thank everyone who has supported my son. He loves Akron. I heard him repeatedly tell reporters that yesterday. He will miss his teammates and wishes Akron nothing but the best. I also want to add that Coach Bowden has been very good to him. The Zips are in good hands! Go Zips!

Thanks for the update. I hope things work out for Brian, it was a pleasure to watch him perform the last few years.

  4. Good point, I wonder if it might be worth redshirting Egner next year. He needs to get stronger. Although if you go 5 years out, you use up a scholarship for 1 extra year on the same guy. Nik will be gone next year but I can see other guys taking those minutes.

Unless he has some kind of injury next year, red-shirting is not possible for Egner. I believe you can only red-shirt for your true Freshman year.

  5. All Ohio guard Evan Payne has returned to the Akron area and will enroll at Firestone HS. He won't be eligable to play this season. He still hasn't commited anywhere And he still lists UA as a possibility.

Evan Payne returns from prep school but likely ineligible to play for Firestone

Payne said he is considering playing basketball at Southern California, Texas Christian, the University of Akron, Cleveland State, South Florida, Central Florida and DePaul
  6. It looks like Kasich was right after all. Highspeed rail is too expensive and will require massive subsidies to keep it operating. Even free spending California has seen the light.

State Panel Suggests Putting California High-Speed Rail on Hold

The report criticized the authority for failing to identify a long-term funding source for the $25 to $30 billion needed to complete either of those segments. The authority also failed to specify which of the two segments should be initiated first, according to the report.

The report also said the authority's business plan was incomplete and its staffing was inadequate to manage a large construction project.

The total cost of the project has more than doubled to $98 billion since voters approved $9 billion in bonds in 2008

Whats really funny is the response from those who still want it built. The same kind of mind set as this.

  7. KD should interview his own players on this show. Does anyone remember the old Faust TV show on Ch. 23? It was a half hour show around 5:00 right before videos. I had friends who were on it with him and it was the most funny thing to watch. He would interview players and the interviews were funny in that Faust would both ask the questions and answer the questions before the player could get a word out. It went like this...really, it was this bad:

Faust: "So, what position do you play?"

    Player: "I...."

Faust: "You play safety don't you?"

    Player: "Yes."

Faust: "What town are you from?"

    Player: "I..."

Faust: "You're from Cincinnati aren't you?"

    Player: "Yes."

    Faust: "What's your major?"

    Player: "I'm..."

    Faust: "It's business isn't it?"

    Player: "Yes."

It would go on like this for about five minutes. Am I the only one who remembers this?

OMG! I had forgotten about that awful show. You have described it to perfection. Faust never let the players actually say anything. Come to think of it, Faust really never said anything meaningful either.

  8. Here is a little update on what our recruits are up to this season.

Kretzer sets gym record to lead Waverly's boys basketball team to Classic title

WAVERLY -- It's common knowledge in sports that big players show up in big games.

That certainly was the case in Friday's Pike County Holiday Classic championship game between crosstown rivals Waverly and Piketon, as the Tigers' Jake Kretzer set a gym record with 43 points in an 89-64 win.

"Tonight (Kretzer) showed why he's a Division I basketball player," said Waverly coach Travis Robertson. "He scored in every way you can score in a basketball game."

He also attacked the basket going after missed shots, grabbing 14 rebounds.

    Reggie McAdams

Elida's 6-foot-6 senior Reggie McAdams topped all scorers with 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Bulldogs dropped to 7-1.

Germany proves too big for Puerto Rico at the Nike Global Challenge (live chat recap)

Mike Richman, OregonLive.com: Carmelo Betancourt lays one in off the glass. He's already taken more shots in the first two minutes of this game (2) as he did all of yesterday. Max Muller hits a jumper for Germany on the other end.

Mike Richman, OregonLive.com: Carmelo Betancourt picks off a pass at half court and races the other way. He flips in a bucket off the glass and draws the foul. He misses the free throw. Betancourt is just 1-5 at the line today.

Mike Richman, OregonLive.com: Carmelo Betancourt finds Chris Ortiz downlow off a back screen and Ortiz hammers home a two-handed dunk. The German coach is unhappy with his team's defense despite the 21-point lead

Mike Richman, OregonLive.com: Final stats: For Puerto Rico, Chris Ortiz 13 pts, 6 rebs, 3 blks; Will Martinez 18 pts, 6 rebs, 6 stls; Dejuan Marrero 7 pts, 9 rebs; Camerlo Betancourt 6 pts; Rasham Suarez 2 pts (1-12 FGs); Eliel Gonzalez 2 pts; Giancarlo Santiago 4 pts

  9. Nice article. I'm jealous of their crowd of 6,063.

I just returned from Huntington at 2 today. In the end I was happy I made the 4.5 hour trek. My daughters wanted to see the Marshall football stadium and commemorative plaques from the 1970 team as they have watched the movie a half- dozen times…

A very quaint campus and town with an awesome bar near in Fat Patty’s..to bad it was too crowded before and after to get a seat…

Walking the halls of the old arena I noticed that the Knicks head coach attended Marshall…How knew?

And yes, the crowd was great…over 6K and MU did have a terrible shooting night, both at in the field and at the line…

However, I was very impressed with the following:

Other than a few touch fouls on Zeke, I thought the officiating was terrific. They allowed both teams to play a physical game.

Gilliam gave us a big lift hitting 5-7. The two misses were good shots. This made up for Q’s lack of scoring.

We went to Zeke early and often, he was a force on the defensive end. They pulled the chair out from under him once and hit the deck hard. A foul was called and the place booed loudly. I kinda agreed….where was the foul?

Tree was awesome. He gave us a great lift with his offensive rebounding…When we get him to make his layups and dunks, I see an All-MAC performer. Harney, too. He played 9 minutes. I want to see him more as his natural talent is unlimited.

I do realize minutes are tight, though. Especially with Nik playing one of his best games. What a huge difference it makes when his 2- foot shots go in…And he kept his cool…

Finally, pound for pound, AA may be the toughest dude on the team.. He was slightly overmatched with a little taller guards from MU and he was relentless on both sides. He penetrated the lane early and often and got guys better shots.

If we can get comfortable taking care of the ball, look out Mid-American Conference…This team can flat out ball..

    Nice report!

  10. ....most overrated player in the NFL.
I'm not sure how you judge most overrated player in the NFL? By salary? I would start how players were drafted. Tony was not drafted, so I would guess anything after that is gravy. Think of all the first round QB picks that stink, Sanchez comes to mind. If you go by quarterback rating (which many do), there are 30 quarterbacks rated lower, as Tony is #4 in the NFL. I might not start my franchise with Romo, but calling him the most overrated player in the NFL is pretty ridiculous IMO.

I would say just consider the source.

  11. LOL. Notice not one specific or proof about "all" these alleged problems? Did you notice that supposed person from UNA posted there as well? Why would anyone from there waste time going on another MAC teams site just to post? I have a feeling he/she may just be a Can't troll.

Your last link is about a guy who is 26 yrs old and was playing arena football in 2008. Bowden wasn't even the coach at UNA until 2009. Try harder next time.

  12. To All My Liberal Friends:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practice of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference.

P.S. If I have offended anyone with this message, please let me know on what basis you found offense and I will include it in next year's season's greetings.

    To My Conservative Friends:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Best post of the season! :D:bow:

  13. Nik played an excellent game. He was just the wrong guy to give it to on that last possession before VCU hit the layup to win. He has a history of traveling calls (maybe they give an extra step in Europe) and he was all thumbs at the absolute worst time. He is NOT a guard.

It was KD's decision to give the Serb the ball at the end of regulation.

  14. I don't care what any of you say, the reason for this loss falls on the shoulders of KD. For some reason that I can't understand, why he relies on a certain personnel whom can't produce down the stretch. The best players should be in the game at clutch time and he wants to go with the vets. When certain players are in the game you can guarantee the loss because of non athleticism speed and agility against solid program teams. Akron will lose a few more games if he doesn't change that philosophy.

My comment about the Serb should not have been handling the ball and shooting 3's. He also made too many turnovers against the full court press. He was in my opinion awful and should be one that should have been on the bench. Joining him on the bench should be Bret M for similar reasons.

Yeah, that Serb guy really cost us the game.

  15. Exactly, Nitro was a couple of steps late

I'm not blaming Nitro for the loss. It was just one play.

I still think the #1 problem this team has to overcome, is turnovers. Last night there was a stretch in the second half where we turned it over at an alarming rate. We had a 10 point lead and we were able to maintain it because we made some good stops on defense. If we hadn't thrown the ball away on silly mistakes on in bounds plays and lazy ball handling we could have extended our lead. Instead of our opponent having to make up a 9 point deficit like last night, it should have been a 20 point lead if we take care of the ball.
