  1. Teddy Roosevelt had the right idea. Speak softly and carry a BIG stick.

I just read an article and it reminded me of this statement.

Bully Boy: The Neocons' Favorite President

    My favorite part:

TR's mental stability was questionable, to say the least. Mark Twain, who met him twice, judged that he was "clearly insane," as Tom Woods recalls in an essay on Roosevelt in Reassessing the Presidency (John Denson, editor). In biographies of TR we learn that after an argument with his girlfriend a young Teddy Roosevelt went home and shot his neighbor's dog. When he killed his first Spaniard in Cuba he "abandoned himself to complete hysteria," as biographer Edmund Morris recounts.

As president Roosevelt would take morning rides through Rock Creek Park wildly shooting at tree branches with a pistol, oblivious to the harm he might do to the nearby private homes in the District of Columbia. He once strung a wire across the Potomac River so that he could hang on it because, he said, his wrists needed strengthening.

Yeah, that's the kind of guy our politicians should aspire to.

You're right. He was way ahead of his time on many topics.

    Teddy Roosevelt

He is noted for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements, and his leadership of the Progressive Movement

Roosevelt attempted to move the Republican Party toward Progressivism, including trust busting and increased regulation of businesses. Roosevelt coined the phrase "Square Deal" to describe his domestic agenda, emphasizing that the average citizen would get a fair share under his policies. As an outdoorsman and naturalist, he promoted the conservation movement.

Roosevelt was the force behind the completion of the Panama Canal, sent the Great White Fleet on a world tour to demonstrate American power, and negotiated an end to the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize.[5] Roosevelt was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in any field.

Roosevelt also dealt with union workers. In May 1902, United Mine Workers went on strike to get higher pay wages and shorter workdays. He set up a fact-finding commission that stopped the strike, and resulted in the workers getting more pay for fewer hours.

Roosevelt helped the wellbeing of people by passing laws such as The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 and The Pure Food and Drug Act. The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 banned misleading labels and preservatives that contained harmful chemicals. The Pure Food and Drug Act banned food and drugs that are impure or falsely labeled from being made, sold, and shipped. Roosevelt was also served as honorary president of the school health organization American School Hygiene Association from 1907 to 1908, and in 1909 he convened the first White House Conference on the Care of Dependent Children.[53]

About African Americans, Roosevelt said, "I have not been able to think out any solution of the terrible problem offered by the presence of the Negro on this continent, but of one thing I am sure, and that is that inasmuch as he is here and can neither be killed nor driven away, the only wise and honorable and Christian thing to do is to treat each black man and each white man strictly on his merits as a man, giving him no more and no less than he shows himself worthy to have."[86]

Roosevelt appointed numerous African Americans to federal office, such as Walter L. Cohen of New Orleans, Louisiana, a leader of the Black and Tan Republican faction whom he named register of the federal land office.[87]

  2. As predicted, Gilliam not only earned more PT (21 minutes) for his good effort against CSU, he got a start tonight and made the most of his time on the floor with great stats -- 7-9 from the floor, 2-2 on free throws, a rebound, an assist and a steal. On the flip side, he led the team in turnovers (3) and fouls (4). Again, he put effort into his D, and appears to be improving. I see him earning more and more PT as he continues to improve throughout the season.

At one point in the second half, Gilliam had the ball and was wide open for a three directly in front of the Zips bench. Instead of taking the shot, he threw a cross court pass that was intercepted by APB, leading to a break away layup. Dambrot screamed at the top of his lungs for Gilliam to "just take the damn shot already". Sure enough the next time Gilliam touched the ball he fired up a contested three ball, nothing but net. That put him at 7 points at that point in the game. He scored 10 more after that.

  3. I agree that the first bit of GT covering Zip football has been pretty weak.

However, the guy is probably in a bit of a tough way:

    1. New on the beat without established relationships/channels for info.

    2. TW is on lockdown regarding info, and this probably extends to the press.

    3. GT does not want to do anything to earn the wrath of TW before he can develop a working relationship.

It's not too surprising that he would be pretty conservative in his approach right now.

There have been times when I felt GT went pretty deep in his coverage of high school football games. No, I'm not saying covering D1 football can be compared to covering high school. Just saying that it makes me think I'll give GT a chance to prove, or disprove, himself before I reach a firm conclusion.

I got a reply back from ABJ Sports editor Ron Ledgard and you have nailed it hiroad1. He acknowledged the error and the plan is to increase the amount of coverage both online and in the print edition. Like I said in my other post, lets give George Thomas some time before we cast judgment.

  4. Zips Athletics ..... will also provide information regarding an open reception to meet-and-greet the coach for all donors, season ticketholders, fans, University faculty and staff, and students.

Can't recall if they had a similar meet-and-greet with Ianello?

Definitely not. I-coaches' agent approached a mutual friend of mine, who asked me to put together a list of Zips fans who would be interested in meeting I-coach. We suggested a cocktail hour meeting at a local country club that we would personally pay to host. The same agent arranged a similar event for his other client who had just accepted a new position(Brian Kelly). The agent thought it was a great idea, I-coach, not so much. After waiting weeks for an answer, we were told thanks, but no thanks. He couldn't even be bothered to give up an hour or so of his precious time to get acquainted with the loyal fans.

  5. Todd Porter wrote an interesting piece on Campbell yesterday.

Matt Campbell is sitting in a pretty good spot right now for a 32-year-old assistant football coach at the University of Toledo.

The former Perry High School football standout has been on the rise since taking over as Toledo’s offensive coordinator three years ago. When head coach Tim Beckman left to take the Illinois head coaching job, Toledo athletic director Mike O’Brien named Campbell the Rockets’ interim head coach.

Campbell has a real shot of removing the interim label from the title and taking over the program for the Rockets. If Toledo does not make him a head coach, there could be another school in the Mid-American Conference taking a look at him, namely Akron. However, giving Campbell the chance to earn the head coaching position probably insulates the Rockets from losing Campbell to another MAC school.

If Toledo shows well on the bowl game, look for O’Brien to give Campbell a crack at being the head coach. O’Brien said the school will conduct a national search.

“The prudent thing to do for the University of Toledo is to see the pool of candidates that is out there,” O’Brien said. “Any internal candidates that have interest — Matt Campbell or whomever — we will certainly look at, but we’re going to see what candidates might be out there.”

    And one more time for good measure;

    TRESSEL NOT COACHING

Emails and messages started again this week when national publications tried to link Jim Tressel to the UCLA head coaching position. I have said this before and will say it again, Tressel ... will ... not ... coach ... college ... football ... next ... year. He likely will not return to major college football, and possibly coaching.

Tressel has said he is at peace with where he is, and he’s comfortable passing judgment on his time at Ohio State. I think he believes there is a higher calling for him at this point, and he’s trying to figure out what that is, or how most to make an impact.

  6. Sounds like he had anger management issues from the beginning.

“That loss pretty much wrecked our season — it kept us from going to the NCAA Tournament,” Donoher remembered Tuesday afternoon. “There were some questionable calls at the end of the game and as we’re walking off the court, the game ball came bouncing Dan’s way.”

At this point in the story, Donoher started chuckling:

“Well, Dan sees that ball and sticks his foot out and gives it a pretty good punt. I don’t think it was a 70-yarder, but it had pretty good force on it. The only problem was I was right in front of him and it drove the ball right into my arm. My fist ended up getting jammed into my shoulder and I’m out there ‘ooohing’ and ‘owwwing’ on the court. And poor Dan, he felt terrible.”

  7. If we can't land Mitch, maybe we can sign Jack Snowball, who was co-winner of the offensive POY in Div 1. Us older farts might remember his dad, Dave Snowball (one time Revere QB), as the extremely young and intense DC for Lee Owens' first squads at UA. Has anyone seen Jack play? He looks like he might project better as a fullback or linebacker.

I've seen him play 3 times. He is a hard nosed runner, with really good football smarts. He is probably a step slow for the big BCS schools, but he should be a good MAC player. Green played wadsworth tough for the first half of their matchup this year, but Snowball blew the game open the second half. He seems to get stronger as the game goes on. I would love to see him in a Zips uniform. I would compare him to Brian Wagner.

  8. Has anyone seen any of the games this weekend and have seen any players you would like to see in a Zips uniform? Watching the Kenton/Norwayne D4 game right now and my brethren from Wayne County is upstaging (21-14 at half after a Kenton hail mary) Mr. Ohio, Beny Mauk. I like seeing #45 as a quarterback on Norwayne, not a number you usually see. I don't know if he has any D1 offers but I think he could play as an OLB or strong safety in the MAC. Great football instincts.

Norwayne played at Green Memorial stadium 2 weeks ago. I live right next door so I watched the last qtr of the game through the fence. Their QB(#45) was very impressive. He is big and fast, with a decent arm.

    Some Info

Quarterback Adam Wallace, The Daily Record Player of the Year, has taken it to another level after already becoming one of the most efficient passers in area history. In the playoffs, Wallace has averaged 20 yards per completion (18 during the regular season) and has passed for 10 touchdowns with just one interception (compared to 26 scores and seven picks in the first 10).
  9. Jim Tressel was not at the JAR last Saturday. End of discussion. :horse::horse::horse::horse:

If no one produces any proof, then there is no point over rehashing it.

I just always find it funny how some people are so quick and serious about squelching some topics.

During the bus trip on Monday to WVU, I asked several UA employees, who spent the whole afternoon at the JAR, whether Tressel was at the JAR on Saturday. All of them said that JT was absolutely Not there Saturday. :)
