Carmelo made his name playing for the Puerto Rico team at the 2009 FIBA-Americas U-16 tournament. He averaged 18 pts, 3 rbs, 2.7 assists and 2.2 steals.
Last year, as a junior, Carmelo was the point guard for Colegio Adianez, a local high school always in the hunt for the State Championship. He was invited to represent PR in the 2010 Jordan Brand Classic (International) and was one of the starters.Following the tournament, Montrose and St. Benedict’s extended invitations to Carmelo. Looking for better competition and greater exposure, Carmelo transferred to Montrose Christian. I hear he’s giving Ty Johnson some hard workouts.
U.S. scouts and college coaches compare his game to fellow Puerto Rican and Dallas Mav J.J. Barea. Carmelo looks up to Steve Nash, the Heat’s Carlos Arroyo (also from P.R.), J.J. Barea and other similar players. He’s a hard working, fearless 5'11' floor leader with very good basketball I.Q., quickness, handle, passing ability, shot and defense. One facet of his game that Wallace lacked is penetration. He’s stated that he’s looking forward to improving his all-around game.
Carmelo follows in the steps of other excellent, but relatively short Puerto Rican guards who had great college careers, like NBA'ers Barea, Arroyo, Can't State's Denis Clemente, UTEP's Filiberto Rivera, and UM's All-BE Freshman/All-ACC Guillermo Díaz, who left early and was drafted by the Clippers.
Top programs like Memphis, Villanova, UM, St. John’s, UVa and Georgetown are interested. I'm guessing more will get involved this season.
As for how he would fit in, I’ll leave that to JT3 and staff. But, if his shot is as good as JW’s, added to all the qualities stated above and great penetration skills, then grab him as soon as possible.

I guess if you're a perennial 8-5 program, you get a pass. UNC

Zips..
New member with no ties to UA... just looking for some thoughts and opinions on your head coaching vacancy. Any hint of Rembielak throwing his name in the hat? Would be difficult for me to believe that you could find someone more qualified to jump start your baseball program. Over 500 D1 wins at both Can't State and Wake Forest.. and a UA alum to boot. Being that he has ties from your area and now southern ties from his tenure at Wake and GT... his recruiting ability would be off the charts. Just a thought....
This guy lists five possible candidates that he's heard mentioned, after a lengthy rant about how our coaching search is taking too long.
Little has been found of who may be considered for Akron's next coach but these five names have been mentioned.
Michigan assistant Matt Husted
Ex-Notre Dame Head Coach Dave Schrage
Ex-Wake Forest Rick Rembielak
Wayne State Head Coach Ryan Kelley
Wright State assistant Greg Lovelady
Watch it end up being some random guy who spent time with our AD at Wisky or Minnesota.
I thought this guy sounded familiar. He was HC at K.E.N.T. prior to Wake and, of course, had much success there. It'd be interesting to see if he'd even have any interest here.
A big part of why Rembielak was so succesful at Can't was the coaching from this guy; Dick Schoonover.
During his time with the Golden Flashes, the Can't State pitching staffs recorded the best seasons in program history. In 1992, Can't State finished second in the NCAA in overall team ERA (2.61) and ranked first in the country in team ERA (2.37) during the 1993 campaign. Under his tutelage at Can't State, three pitchers were named All-Americans by the American Baseball Coaches Association (Dustin Hermanson and Mike Nartker in 1993, Ted Rose in 1996). Schoonover mentored 12 All-Mid-American Conference pitchers, eight Mid-East Regional Team selections, six MAC Pitchers of the Year, four Can't State Varsity “K” Hall of Fame pitchers and three first round draft selections, including the third pick overall in 1994 (Hermanson). -
Here's an interesting new wrinkle in the ongoing Auburn investigation, which many believe will uncover more dirt than at tOSU. A savvy investigative reporter dug deep into the Auburn official website, and found financial records showing that Auburn has paid tens of thousands of dollars to attractive coeds to act as escorts for football prospects. Auburn immediately removed the cited financial information from their website, but not before it was captured and exposed. The NCAA will no doubt find this of some interest.
This is very common at big time programs. Not really a scandal.
Sounds like legalised prostitution to me.

For once, I think you might be on to something.

The PD conducted a study of the working conditions and employee satisfaction at NE Ohio companies. Lo and behold, GP1's favorite whipping boy came in at #6 in the large company category.
LARGE (500-plus local employees)
I know this contradicts his theory that Infocision is some kind of modern day sweatshop, full of modern day slaves. It appears that those who actually work there see things a little differently.
Northeast Ohio's Top Workplaces
At InfoCision Management Corp. in Akron, which says happy workers are better workers, the company said: "We give supervisors the freedom to do what makes their employees happy: quarterly breakfasts, birthday lunches or fun, team-building activities outside the office."Many incentives are on company time and paid for by the company," including visits by Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, Halloween trick-or-treat and Bring Your Child to Work Day.
InfoCision Management Corp.People are treated with respect, and the company is good at putting people in positions to maximize their strengths.
In the future, please stop trying to bite the hand that feeds us(UA Athletics).

Thank you for your comment Mr. Gray.
Not so fast my friend! Are you certain that it isn't "grey"?

Doug Martin sure knows how to pick jobs. SI thinks he is a coach on The Worst Team in College Football.
For one team, the adage "nowhere to go but up" will ring especially true. New New Mexico coordinator Doug Martin, who had been coach at Can't State, has a lot of work to do. -
Expect more of the same when it comes to UA football/athletics until the Care-Factor changes. Every time this topic comes up, you can count in CK to point fingers at the administration, GP1 to talk money or lack thereof and ZipsWin! to blame a lame alumni association.
Fact is, everyone is correct.
Things will change when those involved and have real control of the programs start to give a damn. Does the board of trustees really care about UA football? How many faculty, staff, students and alumni really care about UA football? I agree that the administration has been lacking over the course of the last 25 years. But how to find people that give a damn when they are looking for the next best deal- money or prestige to go somewhere else? Hell, Mr. Infocision himself doesn’t really care about UA football, he’ll be rooting for the buckeyes on September 3rd. Even the miniscule fan base that UA has is somewhat segmented. There are many who really like soccer and hoops, but are in Columbus on Saturdays in the fall as they wouldn’t have the backbone to support football at UA. Let’s face it, being a Zips football fan isn’t the most popular thing to do and most people really do like being popular…
I realize comparing football to soccer and hoops at UA isn’t completely fair, however it makes a point.
Caleb wins the national freaking title at UA and then does what? He doesn’t leave UA for a few more bucks or a name school. He heads over seas recruiting like a maniac in an attempt to win it all again. He gives a damn.
Dambrot makes the NCAA tournament two of the last three years and there is no inkling that he has any desire to make a few more bucks elsewhere. He gives a damn.
Could we make the same argument for football? No way. Let’s dream for a minute that i-Coach goes 11-1 this year, the buckeyes are hit with a 10-year probation, two-dozen three-star recruits begin verballing at UA and then i-Coach gets an offer to coach elsewhere. Sorry folks, he’s gone.
So, while the dream was great, unfortunately getting people to really give a damn about UA football may be an even bigger pipe dream.
You nailed it ZW. Until we get rid of the carpet baggers who actually make the decisions, we will never be consistantly good at FB.

Over the years our coaching staff has been provided cars by many of the local dealers in exchange for advertising and other perks. Nothing new there.

Its college basketball guys. Every team is losing players and counting on incoming freshmen and previous bench players to fill the gaps. Every team except for a handful of the best programs are having the same questions about their rosters for next season. That is the attraction for me, the constant change and growing process for these young men. I'm looking forward to next season. Will we have a perfect team? Not likely, but it will be fun to see how things shape up as the season progresses. Some people on this board need to take a chill pill.

It is going to be a banner year for the talented and deep Zips. Anything less than the Sweet
Sixteen will be a couple of yards short of their goals.
I'd be half-way to dying a satisfied Zips' fan. I've always wanted to see the basketball team make the Sweet 16 and the football team crack the Top 25.
(No football jokes, please
)
WHOA!! No kidding. Dissappointed if we don't make the Sweet 16? GoZips...love the optimism. But, can you show me at least one basketball expert who is willing to say that the Number 6 team in the MAC last year, that lost 4 pretty key players to graduation, is going to emerge as one of the Top 16 teams in the country?
I don't believe there is a college basketball expert who wouldn't agree that if at least 70 of the D1 basketball teams that are better than the Zips get wiped out by bus accident, disease, or some other mayhem, that the Zips have a reasonable shot at a sweet 16 run in the tournament. Such an outcome is unlikely, but is a possibility.
I knew we could count on you to set Skip straight on this topic!

Sounds like a great marketing idea to me. Too bad we didn't think of it first. But I guess you might have to make some kind of a marketing dept for that to happen!
There has been no marketing at Akron since Joe Dunn stepped down as Sports Information Director,
what, twenty years ago?
Mike Thomas era saw a ton of Marketing progress.
The AK-Rowdies were formed...new logos (H-U-G-E improvement to the school's image, apparel sales, etc)...numerous promotions (some bad, some good, but promotional efforts none-the-less).
Mike Thomas & Co. would never have stayed in Akron longer than they did (3.5 years?)...but if they could have stayed another 3.5, Zips fans wouldn't be dreaming of taking "The Next Step," we'd be living "The Next Step."
No arguement from me on that CK. But since MT left, there has been nothing. In a related note; we are starting our vacation today in Myrtle Beach. My daughter is taking the ACT today on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. When she left this morning, she was decked out in all her Zips gear, so I told not to be surprised if some guy named Hunter saw her he might want to call her out for wearing her Fear the Roo shirt!

Looks like one of our favorite posters on ZNO, about the arena project, has made lots of friends on that message board.

Unless they are willing to pay him $150k+ and improve the facilities, that is not going to happen.

Mike Birkbeck has been K.e.n.t.'s pitching coach for quite a while. He's the only Akron player I know of to play in the majors. I think he has to the the #1 candidate for the HC position.
John Massarelli had a decent minor league catching career, and coached in the minors. He's another logical candidate.
Massarelli surely is a good possibility.
That is the kind of coach that this program needs.
Maz is currently the manager of the Lake Erie Crushers. My son is a student at his baseball school. He and I talk about Zips sports and Central Catholics sports every time I see him. He would be a great choice, but who knows if he is interested.

The "Diehards" are already paying for a seat license every season. I pay $100 per seat to be able to keep the same seats.

He had the best game of all the players this spring. His brother was sitting in front of me and they are very excited about him playing next season.
-
The HC wanted nothing to do with the idea. Even his agent who suggested the event was perplexed. Its great that they are reaching out to the former players, but they aren't going to fill the seats at the Info. Fans like Zips Win, CK and myself are the ones who are being ignored, when they should be doing everything possible to get some excitement going about Zips football. These guys are still operating under the premise of "build it and they will come". That ship sailed a few years ago.
The problem the program has is they don't attract new customers because they have been so bad the past couple of years.
My guess is Coach I is not a golfer and doesn't have many golfers on his staff. At the end of the day, I'm not certain a golf outing for 150 of the same people who go every year regardless of how the team performs is the answer. Those people would be happy with only a good game day experience if the team won.
I've been saying this for a few years and nobody listens. They need to have people in the Athletic Department (not the football office) who schedule public speaking engagements for Coach I, KD and Coach Kest that take place throughout the summer and as many as humanly possible. Targets would be Rotary (as many as possible), Chamber of Commerce (as many as possible), Akron Womens Club, etc. Use these sessions to sell tickets. If they would just ask for freaking support instead of throwing up billboards and crossing their fingers, more people might come to the games. Put a personal touch on it.
What they really need to do is get the business of those not attending at all. Spending a lot of time trying to please masochists is not the way to go. I'm one of the masochists and if I still lived around, all I would want is a decent place to park within walking distance to a bar and the stadium, food at the game that wouldn't choke a goat and a seat that didn't require physical therapy after a game. The hardest thing to do in sales is bring on a new customer. It is also the most expensive. It's easy to throw up billboards, buy ads in the ABJ, buy a bus ad, etc. Going out and asking people for their business is hard. It's why they don't do it. It costs NOTHING to be a speaker at a public forum. Most of the time you get a free dinner and all you have to do is get yourself there.
They should put up signs around the Athletic Department saying, "Get them to the game and give them something worth watching." It's so freaking simple.
My bad GP1, my post wasn't very clear. My event was not a golf outing, it was a cocktail party designed to introduce I-coach to a bunch of people in the Akron business community. The diehard fans were willing to put out a few grand to get the ball rolling, but no go. Its exactly the same thing his agent did for his other client who was hired at a new position last year; Brian Kelly. There was not going to be an open invitation to all the members of ZN.O.
-
I would hope that those invited to a University golf outing are there to support the University, not to have their asses kissed by the Athletic Department.
With the exception of only a few (the "pros/ringers" that attend these events with the expectations to shoot 18-under, and win something), everyone I know that attended the Outings was there to take a day off work, see old friends, get a little drunk, get to know the staff a bit on a personal level, and talk some Zips football in June. Golf is just something fun to do for a few hours while you're drinking and BS-ing.
All the more reason to organize a group of about ten guys and invite the coaches for a golf outing. I'm sure getting some sun after spending most of their lives watching film in their offices for 22 hours a day would do them some good.
I tried to do just what GP1 is suggesting last summer. Me and a couple of other fans put together a day at Fairlawn CC for the Coaching staff to meet some of the die hard fans. All that was required from the staff was to show up and shake a few hands and tip a few beers.

Yes. I think what you are saying is you had a brain fart when you commented on his learning ability and proneness to injury.
Kinda like you're just being a jerk with this post.
No. These are two entirely separate issues.
Glad we cleared that up.

He already had a previous run in with the police. He was cited for underage consumption in the Silver Ghettos parking lot incident. It will be interesting to see how the new Can't State AD and head coach handle this. Senderoff is already on record saying he wasn't going to tolerate any problems.
