I don't drink beer, but the way things are going, I might have to start.
Most exciting thing about this year thus far.Nobody likes to lose, but people do want to be excited. Give the masses some support and they will be excited. Give them nothing and we will see 500 people per game. -
Unfortunately, as of now when it comes to football "We Are... Can't State" Rah!
-
Moore looks like a fish out of water in our offense. His mobility is one of his best assets, but we are asking him to stand in the pocket and deliver his passes. I hate this offense and it does'nt seem to be a fit with the players we have on the roster.
-
This is where this thread belonged since the beginning.

I want the guy to succeed but he has been a disaster and it's hard to see him turning this thing around. My worst fear is that he'll "improve" to 3 or 4 wins a year - just enough to keep him from getting fired - and we'll be stuck with him until his contract runs out.
Ianello could lose every game this year and he will still be the coach. Unless some rich booster comes up with the money to pay the remainder of his contract, we are stuck with him. UA does not have the money to get rid of him. Its a classic Catch-22 situation.

I can assure ALL Zips fans that Barley House is behind you 100%. ALL staff will be wearing new custom Akron/Barley House shirts during ALL Zips games. I just posted the shirt on the Akron Barley House Facebook account. Our beer special for Saturday game days are 22 oz Zips keep the cup (Bud or Bud Light) for only $3.25! I would be more than pleased to see the place taken over by Zips fans EVERY Saturday (just like the December Soccer games). Your voices were heard in the past and we made the proper changes. Let's start this season off the right way with a HUGE party in support of YOUR Akron Zips!!!!
-Ryan Hartzell
-Barley House Owner
Very cool that the Barley House is doing this... to TRY to support the Zips.
We ZipsNation people have to keep in mind that the Barley House... and MSOT Akronites all TRY to support the Zips...
But… there are also reasons why some of us have mixed allegiances. It seems strange to me that some ZipsNation people do not GET IT. Time for a history lesson!
First… MIXED ALLEGENCES - Ohio State is one of the largest universities on the planet... with the largest alumni association. NE Ohio has about 5 million of Ohio's 11 million population… and a good part of OSU’s alumni. So… just from sheer numbers… there are likely at least as many OSU alumni in NE Ohio as Akron Alumni… and probably more. I went to Ohio State... like many Akronites... and I also graduated... a few times... from Akron. There are thousands of AKRON/OSU fans like me… like it or not. My GF is also an Akron alumni… and we are both big OSU fans. In fact… most former GFs are OSU fans…. whether or not they went to OSU.
Consider this CLEAR example of what I am trying to convey:
Last March I was in another West Akron Sports Bar… watching the MAC Championship game. The bar was packed… wall-to-wall… full of Akron colors… and I saw ZERO Can't State fans. The place erupted when Akron pulled off the win. It was nice to see.
A couple months earlier… the same bar was packed with Scarlet and Gray… and the place also erupted when OSU won a bowl game… saving face for the ENTIRE BIG TEN conference!
It’s the SAME CROWD! Get it? OHIO is an Ohio State… state… and in NO Ohio... we also like to root for the Zips… if we can find a reason!
Second… the NATIONAL NCAA FOOTBALL SCENE - Akron is not a factor on the NATIONAL college football scene. NE Ohio is full of OSU fans as we all grew up despising most other Big Ten schools… some MUCH more than others… and we grew up backing Ohio State… and watching Ohio State football at a time when Akron was not even a Division I school. I don’t remember EVER watching an Akron game on TV here in Akron.
Third... BACKING OHIO STATE - although rooting for Ohio State is not always rewarding… it is less of a waste of time than rooting for a doormat team in the MAC. Rooting for OSU actually has rewards occasionally… like top 10 rankings year after year… and like successfully battling it out in the big Ten and staying on top in football… and basketball occasionally.
Fourth... PAST EFFORTS TO BACK AKRON - We Akron alumni who are long-time Akronites… have all tried Rooting for the Zips in football… and most of us have been trying for decades… but the football program here in Akron is PATHETIC… year… after year… after year.
We lost to a high-school last year… remember that? Does anyone realize how other MAC schools must have felt about that game? Gardner-Webb enrollment – 2,500! We have bigger high schools in Akron!
Gardner-What? beat a MAC school… at home! This was a new LOW for the MAC Conference.
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=302542006
So maybe G-W had a banner year…?
They were 4-7!
Look at this schedule: http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/s...runnin-bulldogs
This alone is more than enough reason for Akronites to NEVER want to waste a Saturday afternoon at that stadium again. .. impressive facility or not.
. But... we will keep trying to look for a reason to back Akron footbal.
Fifth… FACILITIES and RECENT UNIVERSITY EFFORTS - I AM a big U Akron fan… and I really admire the fact that the university has become a very cool campus… with some very successful academics. I like the leadership team and I am amazed at what they have done. I just shared maybe 30 photos of the campus with associates in China… and they were also impressed.
I am also impressed by the new football stadium… somewhat small… but built on an appropriate budget… and very impressive for a MAC school.
The issue is that it’s still embarrassing to go there and see a game.
We may win 2-3 games this year… but maybe not. Maybe… we will be worse than last year.
The 2012 recruiting class is a joke… and the future of Akron looks very bleak. In fact… if we cannot manage to lose the embarrassment of the MAC ng we will see an 0-11 season in the very near future… due to the inability of the coaching staff to recruit in a football-rich state. We are a joke in the MAC… let alone on the REAL NCAA football scene. We have been waiting for a team for longer than most Zips fans have been alive.
I like what the university is TRYING to do for the football program… and I like the fact that the coaching staff is all from larger football programs. But… I am already tired of seeing iCoach… and tired of listening to him. It’s time for him to prove himself.
Probably… we have all read the most favorable MAC review on the Zips. iCoach finished the season with less scholarship players than a Division II team. Maybe you can attribute that to the level of talent… and to the Weeding Out process… but maybe it’s also due to a lack of respect for the coaching staff and program.
I’m at least 10 years older than iCoach… but I’m still an athlete… a tri-athlete… a weight-trainer. iCoach is built like a soccer mom. Lift some weights DUDE… and do some few hundred sit-ups a day. Maybe that will help with the respect thing.
And you ZipsNation idiots who bad-mouth OSU fans… keep in mind… that OSU fans... those in Akron... are also U AKRON’S fan base !!!! You sound like idiots talking about the red and silver team like they were blue and maize.
Prediction for today… OSU has 6 scores on offense… 2 on defense… 1 on special teams... as they spend most of the afternoon evaluating 2nd team players.
OSU covers the spread easily.
Post of the year for football!

Nice analysis GP1. My sons 7th grade team runs a more complex offense. If that doesn't change we are going to have a long season.

CK If you are really interested in making this forum better....you should start deleting this kind of radical post designed to cause a caustic debate.
If you respond to the post, YOU are the fool. Why do you feel the need to respond to every stupid post Zach makes? Do you really think you can convert the kid? Seriously?
As I said previously, those who respond are EQUALLY to blame as those who start it.
Stop responding, and the posts will disappear. Keep responding, and they remain visible.
You way isn't working. Try mine if you really care about the board's quality.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it really make a noise?

I am redfaced. Now the Aggies are denying they sent any letter to the Big 12.
They did just to make the NY Times look bad. You know how those Texans operate!

Ron Ledgard, the sports editor at the ABJ is a pretty good guy. He has limited resources and understands we are in a pro sports market, but I think they have done a better job in the last year or so promoting the Zips. There are lots of stories he would like to see in the paper, but he is limited by the actual size of the paper. The more papers sold and the more clicks on the on line stories, the more likely we are to see more written about the Zips.

What people need to remember is - If Zach posts anti-Ianello stuff 500 times, 500 people are not against Ianello. Only Zach is.
And all you people that respond ad nauseum to that crap need to stop it. Our site is getting clogged with a ton of absolute worthless petty garbage, and the person that starts it is just as equally as guilty and all those who respond.
I really do not know what to do about this, but I'll figure it out. Somehow this site needs to return to the quality is once possessed.
I am doing my best to help the situation. Someone finally made me use this;

Ohio State 65 Akron 7
My heart wants to think its going to be a close game, but my head says Captain is right on the mark.

I knew that eventually someone would end up on my Ignore List.

This is the best Ianello story yet. I learned about him from this article than all the others put together. There is hope!

I will contact the basketball office and propose such a dinner/fundraiser. What would the attendance be, in your opinion, if it was a hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks and Coach D speaking event?
Thats a good question. I would guess there were over 200 at the end of the year banquet and around 100 at the golf outing. Good luck and if you make it happen I will be there.

My last Zip-OSU prediction ended up being slightly inaccurate
This year it'll be different, both for my accuracy and the Zips' fortune!
The Red and Silver open the Fickell era in grand style as the kickoff is returned 93 yards for a quick 7-0 OSU lead. The Zips settle down and the only other scoring of the 1st quarter is a long Red and Silver FG. Down 10-0 early in the 2nd quarter, The Lone Ranger starts to click with Russell, Meriwether and Suel. Chisholm take advantage of the safeties playing back and darts 25 yards for the 1st Zip TD of 2011. The celebration is short lived however as Moore is forced to limp to the sidelines after he trips over Bice's feet just after the exchange. X-rays are negative, but iCoach keeps CM8 out for the remainder of the game as a precaution.
PN7 struggles to get the offense moving in his only 1st half series. Alternating QBs throughout the game, OSU scores on a long run by Braxton Miller just before the half. The halftime score is OSU 17, Akron 7.
Tyler Williams takes the 2nd half kickoff 72 yards to the OSU 15. On 1st down, PN7 fires a strike to Suel in the corner of the end zone and all of a sudden it's "game on" in Columbus! The Zip defense, buoyed by the success of the offense, begins to close the door on Miller and company. The tunnel of pride begins to crack under the weight of Wagner, Hazime, Waller etc. PN7 puts on an aerial display unseen in Zip land since Brian Magrell's 1994 outburst in Muncie. In the end, he connects on 4 TDS to three separate receivers and the Zips takes their second victory in the series by a surprisingly comfortable 38-20 margin.

Nothing against Akron, but if you are comparing Akron to Pittsburgh's urban decay!?!....you have lost your mind. You have obviously not been to Pittsburgh in this decade. Pittsburgh is home to NHL, NFL & MLB, plus Duquesne and the University of Pittsburgh. Consol Energy Center-of the Penguins is brand new, PNC Park, Heinz Field, and the Petersen Event Center are all newer. The Rivers casino is brand new, and is awesome. They have beautiful waterfronts, Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines, Zoo, Aquarium, Conservatory, Botanical Gardens, Station Square and the Stript district. Pittsburgh is the world record holder for bridges (446) within city limits, beating out Venice, Italy, the previous record holder by 3 bridges. I would not lump Pittsburgh in with your urban decay examples.I've been all over the rust belt, and Akron seems to lack a lot of the severe urban decay that cities like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and (ugh) Detroit have suffered from.Maybe you should change your screen name to Dr PittZip!

Hilltopper has it corrrect. If you want to use a great private course venue then you have no choice but to have a Monday event. This outing has significantly increased participation since moving from a public course to Silver Lake CC (2009) and Portage CC (2010). The afternoon flight was added due to the morning flight being sold out and more golfers wanting to participate.
If you have any questions you can call or email Amanda Aller in the Men's Basketball Office. Her phone number is 330-972-7781 and her email address is ama38@uakron.edu.
I get it that a nice country club setting is preferred and I'm thrilled to hear it's well attended. Do you think having a dinner or cookout with some speakers including Coach D would be a well attended financially productive addition to the Men's fundraising efforts?
Perhaps you should call Amanda Aller and request a meeting with coach Dambrot to present your idea to him. I would imagine if someone was willing to put the work into setting up such an event, KD would be glad to attend.
-
Thanks MDZIP for the info. I'm puzzled that a decision was made to have a weekday "lunch" as opposed to dinner. The obvious answer is that lunch allows a morning flight and an afternoon flight but has this event been so popular and financially rewarding for the program to not hold it on a Saturday or Sunday? Do you all think there is enough interest to hold an evening dinner with the AD and Coach D holding court? Would the players be allowed to attend? I believe some of the golfers would attend both events and the working stiffs who can't make a week day event would be given an opprotunity to mingle and contribute as well......what do you think? This would be a little more enticing thay simply penning a donation check.
Having the event start early is better on a weekday, leaving the opportunity for the participants to still get to the office for part of the day. If you're trying to attract large $$ donors you don't hold your event at a run of the mill public golf course. Most country clubs are closed on Mondays and do not host non-member events on weekends. The players have not attended this event in the past. They are in school.

Im not on the payroll of 1350, but lets give them a little credit. All the mens Bball and Football, all non conflicting womens games, about 15 baseball games, and now 10 soccer games being broadcast. Thats a pretty decent committment, and the FCC controls their signal and power- nothing they can do about it.
Do you think they broadcast those games for free?

That is the way you keep a happy fan base. Glad to see someone step up and make things right.

Kind of like preaching to the choir. If the ad is focused on Wagner, it's a good one. Now carry that theme throughout the city. Make it visible to Zips fans that aren't fanatics. The ones that would be on the edge if they started winning, or it was a nice day and they had nothing to do. Push those folks out the door.If you didn't spend time at ZN.O or Gozips.com, you would never see the ad.When you place that kind of advertisement with Google, they ask you what Key Words you want their search engine to look for. I would hope that they include anyone who reads the sports sections of Ohio.com, TheRep.com and Cleveland.com. The advertiser is charged for each time someone clicks on the banner ad.
-
How long can 1350 continue to exist? The last time I listened, they had no paid commercials...only the public service types.
Anyplace would be better for the Zips broadcasts than that joke of a station.
