  1. Sure...it would have given him a slam dunk, sappy "feel good" column. Something like:You're Paul Winters. You played for Akron. You graduated from Akron. You were released from Lee Owens' Akron staff. Your heart was injured. You hurt. You could have quit. But you didn't.Where your alma mater lacked faith, Wayne State didn't. They believed in the hard-working kid from Akron. The kid that practically willed Jim Dennison's teams to victory on 33 different Saturday's during his record setting career. The kid who became a leader on men - Lee Owens record setting offensive coordinator. Lee Owens' confidant. Lee Owens "rock."It was never easy for Paul Gibson Winters, the 8th of 9 kids, born to a single mother who worked nights cleaning...blah blah blah.
  2. At this time, a little over a handful "disagree".7 out of 67 disagree as of 9am today.I think there are a lot of AD's that would KILL for an 89.6% approval rating on a major hire.
  3. ...and the Grinch's heart grew two sizes that day...
  4. So, an average MAC salary. At the same time, Central Michigan is prepared to pony up 600k a year to keep Butch Jones from leaving.Coaches that have proven themselves (allegedly...we'll see how the guy does w/o MAC-killer LeFevour) tend to get more money than 1st year guys.We also don't know Ianello's salary yet. I'm sure I won't see him shaking an old McDonald's cup outside The Q.
  5. I don't recall anything more than the lid. He'll wear it all again next August. Carolina Blue and White. I'll get a good photo.
  6. What has he done to earn your trust?1.) He actually interviewed the candidates, rather than only look at won/lost records on a school's web site, or idiotic comments on fan forums. 2.) He didn't look at Central Michigan and think "This is the only possible way to have success in the MAC."3.) He released a coaching staff that was still under contract for a year. In these economic times, he could easily have said "Hey, my hands are tied...we have to keep the guy." But he made the tough (monetarily) call. 4.) His own career advancement depends on it.Look - I have a long way to go before I buy into YouTube Tom part-and-parcel. The way he handled Reno's dismissal was absolutely wrong and he has a mile to go to make up for it. But he knows better than anyone on this board whether or not Ianello was the best candidate for the Akron HC job.
  7. D'Orazio is coming here as a safety I believe. Assuming he still wants to attend UA, that is. If Grand Valley State comes into the picture, we can kiss Zach good bye.
  8. You should email Tom and notify him of him of the error in his ways. Here's a template from a few years ago. You write a letter like that, to keep a coach that's 17 - 95?!No thanks...I'll trust the AD on this call.
  9. How did 5 MAC teams get bowl bids without Chase Hoobler on their team? How is it possible?
  10. Ianello is one step removed from being a Belichick assistant. The way you repeat whatever you hear, you're one step away from being a parrot. But I don't hold it against you?
  11. The people at Notre Dame had no problem with the fact that the guy was previously employed by Wisconsin. But the US AD should? That's insane. The guy came into a Wisconsin situation where the team was 1-10, and recruited a class that went to the Rose Bowl. But UA should avoid him because he formerly worked with TW? That's insane.Look at the resumes of any AD or coach. In their particular region they've been employed my multiple schools. That's their life...if they are any good, they get a promotion in 4-6 years. After 20 years in the business, you've ended up working with scores of administrators and coaches. So TW should limit his talent pool because he worked tangentially with someone 8 years ago? Or 15 years ago? I don't get people's logic. I really don't.
  12. One thing that is painfully obvious from reading many of the responses to the Ianello hiring is...there are a lot of very simple-minded Zips fans with Internet access and too much spare time. The easiest thing in the world to do it look at the surface, and stop right there."He's just like Brookhart. A BCS position (WR) coach. Same old same old." Baloney. Ianello is 44 years old, but has coached in some capacity, at BCS schools like Alabama, Wisconsin, Arizona and Notre Dame, for 23 years. Brookhart spent many of those same years selling AutoCAD software or fetching drinks for Mike Shannahan's staff. Ianello knows how to recruit top-tier talent (not like the talent that JD/Pitt recruited when Walt Harris was coach). While Notre Dame's record was mediocre during Ianello's time on the ND staff, the level of play he lived in on a weekly basis was light-years ahead of that which JD experienced on Walt Harris' Pitt teams.Ianello is a Top 10 recruiter in the NATION. His ties to Notre Dame allowed him access to the best high schools in the NATION. I think his expectations for a recruit are going to be a LOT higher that those of, say, a guy from a D-II program. But Brian Kelly won at CMU...so any D-II head coach MUST be a slam dunk, right? Yeah...it is that simple. "Look at Haywood at Miami...ex ND assistant, right? How's Haywood doing?" - Give me a break. You would be the same guy begging UA to have hired an ND assistant 10 years ago because former ND assistant Urban Meyer was so successful at Bowling Green. Do you have a free-thinking bone in your head?Haywood took over a train wreck at Miami. Shane Montgomery ran that program into the ground in 5 short seasons. But they started playing better at the end of 2010. Dysert will be a good MAC QB. The book on Haywood is far from it's conclusion. I checked out some of the Notre Dame message boards, and ND fans seem to be very disappointed that Ianello's gone. NO ONE is happy to lose him. These same ND fans are tired of losing...losing for 2 consecutive decades. Yet they wanted to keep a "loser" from the Weis staff? Obviously Ianello did an outstanding job at ND to still be wanted by the fans, and by the University who entrusted him with the reins to the program after Weis' dismissal last month. Ianello may be good, he may suck. Like JD, a lot will depend on his schemes and who he surrounds himself with as assistants. And, if he has early success, how he handles it. We now have one of the top young assistants in the nation as our head coach. A guy that has recruited Top-10 classes back-to-back-to-back. To hate on the guy straight out of the gate is just plain ignorant.
  13. That would mean the guy won a ton of games for the Zips. I could handle that.
  14. Every HC candidate is - "The Best Recruiter Ever." Just like every AD candidate is "The Best Fund Raiser Ever."How is it that George O'Leary is the only guy who's ever been called out for a bogus resume'?
  15. Faust was a great recruiter too. There's more to the equation.
  16. In 2008 at the Zips basketball golf outing, the UA all-time leading scorer was in attendance wearing his NC lid.I will not be meeting up with him....I WISH it were only the UNC lid. He had the matching shirt and shorts too!
  17. I hope the games stay in Canton/Massillon. That area needs the money, and a lot of Stark County restaurants and hotels do very well on that weekend. It would suck if the games move to Columbus or Cincinnati. They don't need the cash.
  18. Not unless we scheduled better, and quit losing our "measuring stick" games. We WOULD have a better chance of winning more than 1 game in the NIT, however.
  19. Trust me, I do not come here to tick you guys off, I can't help it I had to come on here and defend my Guins! Can anyone tell me what "Stoops" rhymes with?Hint -
  20. Please refer to the graphic.
  21. This just in, ZN has learned that eguins is on suicide watch. I heard eguins pooped one an unheard of 50cm when he heard the news?
  22. No royalties will be collected on it's use. Tis the season.
  23. Look for a big jump after the Malone game.
  24. Has anyone heard ZipsLive lately? It is absolutely unlistenable. I had it on for about 10 minutes last week while folding clothes...and that was all I could take. The host precludes every question with a 5-minute introduction of inane diatribe. The coach answers the "softball" question, then another 5 minute diatribe begins. Then they go to the same 3 maddening commercials that we've all heard 8000 times...then it's back to another 5 minute diatribe before the next softball is lobbed. The best part of the show I heard was KD talking about the soccer team. The host asked him a basketball question, and KD freestyled, asking "How about that Zips soccer team?" The host broke into a very mechanical, again long winded, generic overview of the Zips soccer team, then went back to his basketball question. KD then asked the guy "Have you ever been to a Zips soccer match?" The host replied "No," then followed it up with some additional schlocky generic soccer diatribe. KD, sensing the guy was stalling, pressed it further.."I can't believe you've never been to a Zips soccer game?" The host snapped back with something like "CAN WE PLEASE GET BACK TO TALKING BASKETBALL?" You could see the smoke pouring out the guy's ears through the radio...and that's tough to do.If you can't hear ZipsLive, you aren't missing anything.
