For those of you who like to see things printed in "traditional" news before you believe it:Maybe the Best Player in the Zips 2007 Recruiting Class

Good for him. Euro games, with the emphasis on offense, suit him to a tee. He never came close to living up to his press clippings while he was here. Dan Hipsher had a way of bringing out the worst in a lot of players. And, if I had to take the court alongside Bryan Hipsher...and be expected to win Division 1 basketball games...I'd probably play some angry, crappy basketball too. I'm glad he overcame.

Apparently, all the points he scored in garbage time...the trash-talk...it all ironically paid off.

WHO HAS MADE A BIGGER IMPACT FOR THE PROGRAM.....
Captain Kangaroo replied to timmyboy's topic in Akron Zips Football
By "the football team," do you mean our opponent? Domonokos and McClain were a wash...they both missed a ton of kicks. Domonokos' just missed at a faster speed, and traveled further. -
I've heard anywhere from Round 2 through Round 5. Depends on the combine results and how the selection goes. The clowns that selected the All MAC teams won't be able to affect his draft status.
-
Would it have been better if he threw them into triple coverage?Low mobility? - YesBad decisions when heavily pressured? - YesThrows a bad deep ball? - No way. If our WR was open, more often than not he put it on the money.Off the top of my head I believe he threw for 40+ TD's and finished #2 in U of A all-time passing yardage despite only playing 2 seasons. I've seen worse.

Disagreed and here's why. I think a big problem JD has run into with recruiting SO MANY kids from Florida is that they come from a different world and many times (not all the time) have discipline and attitude problems. From players I've talked to the unity that used to exist on this team is just not there anymore. I think a big reason is that when you bring in so many Fla kids a schism develops in the team, because the Ohio/Pennsylvania kids come from such different worlds (more disciplined worlds) and can't understand the behavior and the coaches' tolerace towards some of these kids out of Florida, and it creates resentment. Now you may say that all national programs mix kids from all over, but this isn't necessarily true. Sure Ohio St brings in a few kids from Fla, but they are mostly the best of the best from the Midwest. Sure, Tennessee bring in a few kids from up north, but they are almost exclusively Southern kids. Florida recruits Georgia/Florida almost exclusively. When you just bring in a few kids from outside your region, they are forced to mesh and conform to the rest of the team. When you bring in almost half and half, seperate cultures exist. So what JD is running into with getting half of his recruits from down that way is a unique mixture of personalities that I don't think is working out too well for him, as was evidenced with all the team problems of last year. An Ohio school should recruit 90% midwestern kids. It may be tempting to take shortcuts and go grab some of that Florida speed (which most of the time mysterioiusly no other Florida schools wanted...), but what you gain in talent you kill in team discipline, chemistry, and unity. Just my opinion. We were stiffed on signing day by a couple "midwest" players. We picked up a couple Florida kids as late replacements. That's one of the reasons last year's class was so heavy on Sunshine state kids. It appears the 2007 class won't include more than a couple kids from Florida. In general I agree with trying to keep the recruiting midwest-centric. I also agree that recruiting Ohio is very difficult due to the volume of D1-A schools. Plus all the other out-of-state schools that invade the area. Western PA is a great place to recruit, since Pitt, WVa and Penn State can only take so many "locals." And, the two hour drive from Pittsburgh to Akron is very appealing to kids who want to have their parents attend their games. Even the road games are easily driveable.Lastly, it is true that the local high schools have traditionally steered their D1-A caliber kids away from Akron. They want to send us their D1-AA level kids...and those days are over. That pisses them off. Hopefully the new stadium will be enough to start getting high-caliber Akron area HS player to stay home...and quit going to Northwesters, Syracuse, Pitt, etc.

In rare glimpse of forward thinking regarding U of A Sports Marketing:I received a Christmas card from the football program this year. In it was a nice team photo from the 2006 Gridiron Golf Outing (our foursome) and also the date of this year's upcoming event - June 11th, 2007. Very well done!! It will be interesting to see if such forward thinking is a trend, or a fl.a.s.h in the pan. I'm shocked that this could come from the same department that can't send our season tickets before the football season begins, or waits until September to announce $5,000 parking spaces to those who paid $50.00 the year prior. Or who masterminded to splitting of the Rubber Bowl into "reserved" and "general admission" seating. Or who waited until January to get some statistics going on the JAR scoreboards. But, I'm happy to see something positive regardless.I hope this type of attention to detail becomes commonplace. It will go a long way in making me believe the hype I heard when the new regime came into town in 2006. To date, things have been profoundly disappointing, to say the least.

He must have watched a different Luke Getsy that I did for two years. Luke wasn't the best QB I ever saw, but he could throw a nice deep ball. Ask David Harvey.

Gotta Get a Ticket with Zippy Pass
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZipsWin!'s Roommate's topic in Akron Zips Football
It has always been there. However, sellouts in any sport haven't happend for years. It hasn't been an issue. -
Thanks for the kind words. All I can say is post deletion is very, very rare. If a post is deleted on ZipsNation, there's a reason and it typically involves some history. I am going to lock this thread. I hope no one minds. If anyone has questions regarding the original topic, please start a new one and I'll address whatever you'd like.

I will be short and clear:You have posted on this board 787 times to-date. You have had one post deleted by me. Quit playing the "victim." It was deleted because it misrepresented the status of players enrolled (at that time) @ U of A. You presented speculation as "fact." That has no place here. I take quite a bit of pride in the content & accuracy of the information provided on this board. We all do. If you read it here, you should, with 99.9% certainty, bank on it being valid. That is the case if my name is attached to it. If something is known to be untrue, it will be deleted. And, as demonstrated above, deletions are EXTREMELY rare. Testamony to the quality people participating on ZipsNation. If you don't like what I write, or do not find the information useful, here is some advice - do not read my posts. That, or create your own message board. If you wish to participate on this site, you play by our ridiculously simple rules that about 800 people don't seem to have a problem with.

Captain, are you saying we may move some OL to DL? What do you consider "interesting?"Also, I had been checking rivals on a daily basis concerning Morgan Williams and his collegiate future. But after this news, maybe we should reserve the rest of our scholarships for JUCO DL's?We've already got Gary Pride verballed, and after watching the wideout from Florida cut up the Suckeyes as an all-purpose back (ala, poor-man's Reggie Bush), I'm pretty excited about the possibilities Pride could bring to an all-purpose back role. He's got blazing speed. I hear some existing LB's, TE's and others may get a look on the D-line.If I were in charge...and there are numerous very good reasons I am not...I would give Merce Poindexter a long look at DE. We have Kasparek and Cruz at TE, and we really don't utilize the TE all that much. And Poindexter was a very good DE in high school. I saw him in a post-season All Star game on Fox Pittsburgh after he graduated HS, and he looked great. We'll have to wait until April to see what the staff is thinking. Also - I am told the only way Morgan Williams would end up at Akron is if his grades were sub par. In that case he would pay his own way for the first year and be eligible for a scholarship only if he passed his Freshman season. In that instance, "signing" him on Feb 6th wouldn't really cost us anything.

Two DL's are now officially gone from the program, likely never to return to the Zips unless they buy a game ticket:Antwon Hight - No GPA. Dropped out without taking finals.Jerrel Stoudemire - Finished the semester, but didn't make grades. Transferred to a JUCO somewhere. As mentioned by ITZ, DL Clarence McPherson also left. A win/win, as he was unhappy in Akron, and no one was really too sad to see him leave. If BuckZip would now like to add these names to his rant list, he can do so.Nate Robinson is apparently "feeling the waters" regarding his NFL draft status...like Frye did after Owens was canned. He hasn't signed with an agent...at least to anyone's knowledge. My gut feeling is the waters are pretty frigid.Johnny Peyton, a WR from South Florida was supposed to transfer to Akron this fall. It didn't happen.RB Andrew Johnson, as mentioned by a few others, will transfer from Miami Fl to Akron for his senior year. He'll sit out 2007. He's extremely fast, and may get a look at WR.Look for some interesting names getting a look on the DL this spring. Also - There are 5 scholarships remaining. Expect most, or all, to go to defensive linemen.

Getting back to the original topic:Yes, the Zips will play @ UConn this fall.

If we're looking for a 6' guard who can hit a 3-pointers, we have three already in Joyce, Dials and Middleton. I don't see the need to place Goddard in the game. The times I've seen Goddard shoot the ball in "real" games, he's no better a shooter than what we've already had on the court. He "goes off" once or twice per year in garbage time, but in the few legit opportunities I've witnessed he's looked pretty mortal.

Temple sucks. Miami sucks. K.e.n.t sucks. Buffalo sucks. I'm guessing BG moves back west...and they suck.OU sucks...yeah they beat us in 2006, but that was no major accomplishment. Their offense only scored 10 points. They also travel to the Rubber Bowl next season.I don't care if we have a first-year QB and new OL and DL's...we should win the MAC East this upcoming season. The other teams are among the worst in D-1 football.

Puzzling...but it happens often. Hats off to ZipsWin and Bleacher Bum for the reports. While not many responses were listed, a ton of people read them.Interesting note (to me, at least): At lunch when I logged on there were 19 readers browsing, and only 5 of them were "registered." Many of those who enjoy this board elect not to post. To each his own.

You drove down to Athens? For hoops AND football? We lost both games. The ZipsWin! jinx is alive and well! Thanks for the insight. You're always pretty objective about things. If you left the game feeling decent about our play, we must be doing ok.Miami beat K.e.n.t today, so Thursday's game will be interesting.

How the game between the top 2 teams in the MAC isn't on TV tonight is beyond me. I don't get it.BTW, O-Zoner: The Zips message board link on Bobcattack.com is for our old Dreamwater board that died about 4 years ago. I sent a message to the administrator to update it to ZipsNation.org, but it remains an old link. If you can be of any help in updating this information, I would greatly appreciate it.

Word is both Andy Alleman and Luke Getsy received invites to the upcoming NFL combine.
