  1. Yay for Hannah Plybon, 6 treys and a career high 25 points vs. EMU
  2. Not according to that link.
  3. http://www.phillymag.com/news/2015/01/05/temple-university-stadium-100-million-dollar-bad-idea/ • The era of high-quality mid-tier college football is coming to a close: Income inequality is a growing problem in America — society is increasingly segmented into haves and have-nots, and giant chunks of the middle class are finding themselves in the second group. A similar phenomenon is happening in college football. Basically, the new college football playoff has helped align the sport so that power schools from power conferences are best able to compete, both financially and on the field. The four teams in this year’s playoff? Traditional powers like Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State. Oregon is a relative newcomer, but it’s backed by Nike’s deep pockets. And the big, rich schools are going to see the tide turn ever more in their favor. They’re already getting the TV money. Now there’s talk that they’ll be able to expand the number of scholarships they’re allowed to offer, meaning their bench players will increasingly be would-have-been-starters-at-Temple-quality athletes. They may also be allowed to offer increased subsidies to athletes like stipends and upgraded health insurance. All of which means it might not be long before college football has two versions: The semi-pro league built among the Power Five conferences, and glorified club teams like you find at tiny NAIA universities. It’s hard to see Temple making the leap to the first group: The top dozen universities have athletic budgets of $100 million or more already; Temple’s is closer to $44 million. The university can’t afford to keep up. Read more at http://www.phillymag.com/news/2015/01/05/temple-university-stadium-100-million-dollar-bad-idea/#PaRziMIS4WZ6xrfV.99
  4. http://www.cleveland.com/akron/index.ssf/2015/01/university_of_akron_hands_over.html By John Harper, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author | Follow on Twitter on January 05, 2015 at 11:05 AM, updated January 05, 2015 at 11:06 AM AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron will start telling students exactly how much of their tuition is being spent on athletics. Can't State reported that the university, working with the student leaders, agreed to provide a breakdown of the athletic-related fees online or on students tuition statements. University President Scott Scarborough told the station that Akron is "will likely be the first university in the state to provide this information." About $400 of a $428 "general fee" is spent in the athletic department, WCan't State reported. Scarborough told WCan't State that "financial times are tough for students and so they're just wanting to make sure they're comfortable with how their tuition dollars and their student fees are being distributed" Last year, in an attempt to balance its budget, the university raised tuition $102.88 while cutting about 20 academic programs.
  5. This ABJ article was the first of its sort I remember seeing specifically about Akron, however a little Googling shows that students/parents wanting a fees breakdown is not a new issue as your Can't piece shows. Frankly I'm surprised it hasn't become more of a national story line by now. What would be interesting would be for some universities to come up with an estimated advertising/branding dollar value from having their school playing in nationally and regionally televised sporting events (with spots about the school/academics), mentions during professional sports games with athletes from those schools, and other sporting events using campus facilities (e.g. HS playoffs, pole vault convention, ncaa wrestling tournament, big east track championships, etc.).
  6. At $800/year in fees, if a student goes to 20 games it's still $40/game...not exactly cheap. But it's up to them if they want to go to a university, small private college (at 3x tuition), community college, online school, etc. They just need to look at the bottom line amount they're paying for the quality and marketability of education they desire. Itemizing the costs won't change the bottom line. Although some would probably like to make it an issue that state schools should have lower costs as a priority over sponsoring/subsidizing sports.
  7. So the percentage of our fees spent on athletics (28%) is half that of Miami (57%)? Who would ever want to send their kid to Miami?!
  8. Duke.
  9. This is a cool feature. The USF board has a tab for twitter posts related to their teams. Would this be possible on ZN? From Zips Athletic Dept., Wistrcill, Coaches, players, George Thomas, etc. http://thebullspen.com/page/camp_twitter.html
  10. Was looking for something else but this brought back a few memories..
  11. Good question. I'm guessing volleyball is the least concern; they will just practice & play at some other local gym(s). If they started renovations right after basketball season they would have 7 months from April-October to work before the next season starts. Even if the first phase wasn't totally complete, it could probably be in a usable/safe state to resume playing before continuing/completing renovations. Kind of just depends how much they bite off for the first round of rehab. I wonder who is going to create the actual plan for modifications, and when.
  12. Apparently the $400/semester is correct. So 27,000 students x $800/yr = $21.6M that goes to the athletic dept. (actually somewhat less if you pro-rate for part-time students). I don't know how Can't can do it for about 11% as much.

  14. Frenchy brought it up with KD in the pregame interview. KD was, not surprisingly, in favor of renovating.
  15. To me it sounds like there is now an urgency/readiness to do what is possible with basketball facilities, and incremental upgrades to the JAR is what's possible at present. It has been an issue/limitation all during Dambrot's tenure as coach but the Rubber Bowl was an even bigger issue and had to be addressed first. It also sounds like it is not meant to be the final long-term solution, since Dr. S. states in the article that upgrades are needed (wouldn't be wasted) even if it's only used for purposes other than basketball. Personally, I wouldn't care about a reduction in seating capacity; it would still be adequate for most games in the near-term and a scarcity of tickets for bigger games would actually create a little more buzz around the program and may also increase demand for season tix which would also be good for the program. I don't think attracting quality opponents depends on the number of seats as much as the amount of money they would get.
  16. CUSA arenas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Conference_USA_basketball_venue_navbox
  17. I would guess that is the case. CUSA meets in a little over 2 weeks to decide about UAB. It's already news in Texas, at any rate http://www.chron.com/sports/article/University-of-Akron-looks-to-renovate-its-arena-5979456.php
  18. It's hard to see putting $38M into the JAR vs. a 50% downpayment on a new building.
  19. http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2014/12/26/pitt-officially-introduces-pat-narduzzi-as-their-new-head-coach/ Italian Youngstown guy Bo Pelini faces Italian Youngstown guy Pat Narduzzi on 9-5-15. I wonder if these guys were HS classmates. Or maybe their great-grandfathers were, back in the old country.
  20. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/hawaii-athletic-director-says-hawaii-football-could-be--going-away-232207654.html I shuddered a bit when I saw mentioned somewhere the possibility of the P5 increasing scholarship limits. Taking away the top 20% of talent from the G5 would be devastating to the whole tier.
  21. I will enjoy the British accent regardless of how the team does
  22. Like this. That would include 2009
  23. We out-rebounded them 40-38. They shot 20 foul shots and made 17...that was the difference.
  24. and most repetitive remark of the night...at least opponents still feel sky high about beating us
  25. Did they ever mention Akron's ranking in the mid-majors poll?
