Amen. For the most part, very classy Zips fans! B)You don't go to 4 straight MACC games with a bad coach. Yes, I would like to see the schedule upgraded and don't want to see losses to Austin Peay or Eastern Michigan either. However, the program is as good as it ever has been and I believe the growth will continue under KD. This WILL be the case. Here's to a couple more wins this season...

Not true at all. On TV they showed a stat that Kool torched everyone who guarded him...except Jimmy Conyers who guarded him half the game and Kool had less than 10 points against. Great job Jimmy!Kool is a great player. I liked watching because you could tell he was playing for fun and love of the game. I wish I saw that at the professional level but I suppose that is part of what makes amateur athletics so special.

Congratulations on a great season.

Live MAC Tournament Coverage
UAZipster0305 replied to IBleedMACGreen's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
For the record, I posted this a full 15 minutes before McKnees hit that shot. Eerily similar to last year. Depth was the difference in this one. We didn't play great or disciplined (especially with the foul trouble), but survived. Setting up for an exciting weekend. -
Live MAC Tournament Coverage

Does anyone remember last year in the opening round at the Q against Toledo?...then we went on to win the MACC. Enough said. -
Great win, ladies! Keep it going.

Akron is in the BIG DANCE if...
UAZipster0305 replied to joshgozips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
The NCAA Tournament is for conference champions and teams that have the potential to win the National Championship. That is likely not any team beyond the six seed in each regional let alone teams #25-96 and certainly not the Zips. If we make the field of 64 by virtue of winning the MACC, great. Otherwise, we have only earned the CBI (at best)...Can't on our own floor on national television in a sold out arena with a MAC regular season championship and NIT bid on the line and we are not prepared or motivated to play...that is not the heart of a champion, and I don't want embarrassed again on the national stage.Go Zips! Bring your A game and win the MACC. Otherwise, quietly check yourself into the offseason knowing that the only dimension of success for this year was continuing the streak of 20+ win seasons. or bust!Sincerely,Jim Rome -
Agree 100%. Nobody but those two look like they give a crap. The only possible other exception is Humpty.I agree. Humpty came on later in the second half after my initial post. Unfortunately, by that time it was far too late.We totally laid over for them. So much for defending the home court. I think there are only two ways we win the MACC: 1) shoot lights out against Can't State if/when we face them in the finals, or 2) not having to play Can't State because they lost in an earlier round, which I highly doubt.Win or lose, the Zips and the campus/city look great in high definition.

I think the phrase is "peeing down our leg." This would be a great game if: 1) we would stop making so many unnecessary and unforced turnovers, and 2) we could hit any jump shots at all.I am tired of listening to the ESPN announcers say how great of a team Can't is and how they are worth of a NCAA at-large bid. However, I did like that the announcers said there is definitely BCS bias in at-large selections as evident by a graphic showing at-large non-majors progressively dropping from 12 to 4 in the past 5 years. I love the idea of doing the selection blind to the school name and conference.Conyers and Nik are the only ones playing with heart tonight. Everyone else looks intimidated and hesitant.

Kudos! Two things I would enjoy seeing:1) An indoor/outdoor tennis center built in the parking lot adjacent to the field house, and2) The return of the men's varsity tennis team to create parity in nearly all sports.Football = Volleyball + Swimming & Diving

Walk on Tryouts for the Soccer Team?
UAZipster0305 replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
+1For 5+ years, our engineering club team dominated the varsity teams I was originally recruited by. These included Malone, Hiram, Walsh, and Mount Union. We even played a team of just graduated Zips and only lost 9-5 indoor. Amazing how the level of play drops without elite coaching and regular practice and conditioning. The Zips weren't in jeopardy of losing but they still had to play 100% the entire game and we made it competitive. A few said afterwards while shaking hands that we played them better than any team had since they left the varsity level.Again, no shame in not playing varsity for me. I have no doubt I enjoyed my 5+ years of high level club soccer more than I would have playing varsity, and I was a better player because of it. More importantly, I was a better student as a result. -
Walk on Tryouts for the Soccer Team?
UAZipster0305 replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I chose to go to Akron over several D-II and D-III schools that recruited me for soccer after a successful high school career. I tried out as a walk-on in 1998 when Allen Eller (All-Regional) and Michael Apple (All-American) were the starting forwards (my position). Coach Lolla said that the only way one of us (walk-ons) would be taken is if we could compete right away for a starting position. No walk-ons were taken then and I don't believe any will be with the current team. As said in the movie, Rudy, "we have High School All-Americans sitting the bench." That is certainly true for UA soccer, so there is no shame in not making the team. It is an experience just to play at that level against some of the current players during the try-out. -
Say what you want about the coaching; however, I back KD 100% for sitting Humpty if he was skipping classes. Yes, his absence was likely the difference in the game but so were the other ~10 things mentioned here.+4

Canadians Fret Over Bunbury
UAZipster0305 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Eh?...Sounds like the Canadians think we stole Bunbury from them, but isn't he from MN? In terms of hockey, MN is southern Canada, but last I checked, Bunbury played soccer. -
Teal Bunbury wins the Hermann Trophy

Awesome! Proud to say I saw his last goal of the season against Stanford in person. Forget the Heisman Lodge, we need a Hermann Lodge.Way to go Teal! -
Couldn't we question Frye's loyalty to UofA? I mean, the school made a decision and he went against the decision.A player is responsible primarily to his team and coaches. If Frye wanted to question UA leadership at the risk of losing his scholarship and being forced to transfer, he had every right to do that.

I'm only guessing, but see post #11 in this thread.Keep in mind when reading this, this is written from a story somebody told ITZ written years latter. If everything in the post was true, keep in mind CF was what 19 at the time??? This post didn't change my mind one way or another about Charlie, he can play on my football team. Thanks, Dr. Z.You can argue the merits of that alleged situation, but I like that he showed leadership and stood up for the people and things he believed in.I'm a Frye fan and if anyone says he downright sucks and is a loser, I question their loyalty to UA as a whole.

Watch or record the game tonight (8 pm) on NFL replay. Come back tomorrow and post your thoughts. This is not just for zen, for everybody....GP1 included. If anybody has not got a chance to watch NFL replay, if you record it, you can watch the whole game in about an hour by ffwd through the commercials. They do a great job of editing the game, by taking out some of the boring 3 and outs.I saw the game Sunday from my hotel room. I've seen enough Charlie Frye over many years now to know I'm not interested. One good half isn't going to change my mind.It is the same old Charlie. High percentage of completions without the wins to back up the greatness. Maybe it is not the completion percentage that is important, but the inability to take risks down the field or at least come close on long throws that lands him on the bench. If Charlie is so good, how come there aren't teams banging down his door to have him as their starter?I understand a lot of you are fans. Personally, I've never been a fan of his football playing ability even when he was at UofA. I never thought the guy was a winner and he isn't. After what ITZ posted a couple of months ago, I have no personal respect for him at all. The only good thing I can say about him is that in a league full of horrible QBs, he fits right in with the pack. What was said months ago that caused you to lose respect for him, GP1?I saw the game and thought he played great.

URI scouting report from a VCU fan

Outside of Memphis, I would hardly consider any C-USA schools major basketball programs. Though they are the type of programs I'd like to see in our OOC schedule. -
http://www.csuvikings.com/facilities/krenzler.html"The removable dome, a product of Yeadon Domes, covers the entire length of Krenzler Field, approximately 94,000 square feet, with a 60-foot ceiling. It is made of a heavy duty vinyl coated flame resistant polyester architectural fabric." CSU soccer has this and we don't? How great would it to have a dome for late November and early December NCAA Tournament games?

from the front page of ESPN.com...http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4748408ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Charlie Frye waited more than a year for another opportunity to start in the NFL. JaMarcus Russell may find himself in a similar boat.Frye was picked to start at quarterback over former top overall draft pick Russell when the Oakland Raiders visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday.Coach Tom Cable said Wednesday that Russell will be his No. 2 quarterback, with the newly signed J.P. Losman third."As the coach I want to do what I think is best for this team, and that's Charlie Frye," Cable said. "It gives us the best opportunity to win. You watch Charlie every day and his preparation, he just certainly deserves the opportunity."Frye has not played this year and worked strictly with Oakland's scout team. His last start was for Seattle on Oct. 12, 2008, against the Green Bay Packers when he threw for 84 yards and two touchdowns.Since then, Frye has been trying to revive his career, signing with the Raiders in the offseason and serving as the team's emergency quarterback through the first 13 games."It will be good to get back out there with the offense and run some plays that aren't on cards," Frye joked. "I've got a lot of fire in me. I've been that crutch and that supportive guy all season, so now it's my turn to be the fiery leader."The move raises serious questions about Russell, who started the first nine games of the season before being benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski before Oakland's Nov. 22 home game against the Cincinnati Bengals.Gradkowski led the Raiders to a pair of stirring fourth quarter comebacks against the Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers but tore the MCL in both of his knees last week against the Washington Redskins. After replacing Gradkowski in the second half against the Redskins, Russell passed for just 74 yards and failed to move the offense consistently while being booed by the crowd at the Oakland Coliseum."I think that's the whole point here, his struggles are out there," Cable said. "It's on film and in the game and those sort of things. Everybody is working to try and help him get better all the time. He's certainly giving back to that, as best he can, and at some point you hope to, as I always say, have a breakthrough and move forward."Russell was unavailable for comment but said before the game against the Redskins that he still feels he is the Raiders quarterback of the future. But after getting skipped over in favor of Frye, there's increasing speculation Oakland may be looking to sever its ties with Russell, who signed a six-year contract in 2006 that included more than $30 million in guarantees."It's too early for all that," Cable said. "Right now we want to find a way to win these last three games. At this point, this is what we feel, that I feel, is the best thing for us."Frye impressed Oakland's coaches with attention to detail in meetings and practice. Cable said Frye is comparable to Gradkowski in terms of mobility and style."They have great command, they study all the time, they work, they're ultra-prepared," Cable said. "He was here all day yesterday, even before we talked about what we were going to do. That's typical of him. In Charlie Frye's world there is no off day."Oakland chose not to put Gradkowski on injured reserve and is hopeful he can return to the starting lineup soon."It's basically day to day, week to week, but I'm definitely trying to get back for the Cleveland game [on Dec. 27]," Gradkowski said. "That's in my mind, and we'll work hard this week and try to get well."The Raiders signed free agent Losman, who is a former first-round pick of the Buffalo Bills and most recently led the Las Vegas Locomotives to the first United Football League championship.

I agree. I think it will be Mizzou. Not sure the dominoes will have any impact on UA at all if Mizzou is the choice.

I am estatic! Coach Porter could develop this program into a dynasty. I truly believe he is the best coach in the country. Kudos to Dr. P and Tom W. for getting this done.No shame in not winning the National Championship this year either. UVa was outplayed in both of their games and was fortunate enough to win. At the point of PK's, it really does come down to luck. A terrible way to decide the trophy, and I really don't see it as us losing. Unscored upon in the NCAA Tournament is enough for me to know that we are the true National Champions.Hell of a career for Zemanski and all the other players have another opportunity to win one next year.

ITS FUTBOL DAY! (prediction time)
UAZipster0305 replied to tpsjugglerdude's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
UNC in NC or not, we come out strong and dominate: 2-0 Zips. Bunbury and Nagbe with assists from Zemanski and Nanchoff. I like UVA over Wake 1-0 in the other game.
