Retire the Jerseys? Dru and Rome in the Rafters?
Valpo Zip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I totally agree with all what you said.Last year, our early exit at the Q was blamed on the lack of senior leadership, Which i partially understand since Futch and Preston were excellent role players but not team leaders. This year, Dru and Rome have all the supporting pieces in the starters as well as the deepest MAC bench. If we don't win the tournament this year, Dru and Rome will simply be two good players who once wore blue and gold. -
20 free throws in one half. MAC basketball is becoming a free throw shooting contest.
-
I think that this is one of the things that the Athletic department deserves a lot of credit for. It definitely feels good when you see that what you did is appreciated. KUDOS AD.

I agree that Alleman would be a 3rd or 4th rounder... i hope for the browns to take him.i don't see Getsy as a 3rd rounder at all. My expectations for him are between 6th round to free agent...

halfcourt shot at the OU home game
Valpo Zip replied to akZORROrowdy's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I did it in the beginning of the season, but they gave me only one shot... I hit the inside of the rim but didn't make it.If only they gave me 3 shots ! Bastards ! -
I agree with Rowdy zip, it wasn't Bubba last night, it was all lack of depth.O'shea has no bench whatsoever, other than the starting 5, no bobcat seems to know what's going on. Leon fouled out with more than 7 minutes left. They folded like a cheap tent. This should be on KD's scouting report. If we play OU at the Q, we should play fast game to wear them down and attack inside to put them in foul trouble.

I know that this topic has been discussed sparsely here and there, but it has never had a dedicated thread to see what everyone thinks. I love KD as much as the next guy, even more than the next guy. However, I am affraid that the success that he is achieving at Akron is only temporarily and due to 2 good classes that were recruited during the Hipsher era.I am terribly disappointed by our underclassmen. Linhart is the only contributor. Conyers, McKnight and Rybak are still unable to contribute anything... and didn't show any improvement whatsoever since the beginning of the season. McNeese and Bardoare redshirted for a reason... that's really scary. Is KD unable to evaluate talent when recruiting ? or is he unable to attract the good talents to Akron ? or may be he does recruit good HS talents but fails to develop them into good college players ?Let's take a look at our competitors. If we consider a contributor as someone who averages more than 12 minutes per game, Akron has only one sophomore contributor compared to:Can't has 2 Fr and 3 So Miami has 1 Fr and 4 SoOhio has 1 Fr and 1 SoBG has 5 SoBuffalo has 2 Fr and 4 SoEMU has 3 Fr and 1 SoWMU has 2 Fr and 4 SoCMU has 4 Fr and 1 SoToledo has 3 SoNIU has 2 Fr and 1 SoBall state has 2 Fr and 2 SoAny thoughts ?

Hope u feel better SGM. I see us being ranked 33-34 after this week.

Here are my observations about the rest of the season.Next Saturday should be a walk in the park when we host BG. It is the last home game for Dru and Romeo. I hope the fans will be up to it and show up in big numbers to show those 2 guys the love they deserve. BG will also be the last game for me sitting in the Rowdies seats. (I am planning to graduate in Summer).Other than that, @ Buffalo is a game that we should win, while @miami and @Can't are tough ones. Can't still have @ ohio and unless a miracle happens, they should loose this one. This means that even if we loose at Can't and at Miami, we will be tied for first in the MAC east. I still hope we can win out though. All that being said, it all lies in the Q. The Mac tournament is what decides what we do in the post season.

Good Job SGM. How long you've been blogging ?

I don't see why would this game mean more to them. Their chances of getting an at-large are worse than ours. Our RPI is better then theirs. The importance of this game for both teams probably lies in the tournament ranking, if it happens. Hopefully both teams win their conferences and make it to the tourney, being ranked 10 and playing #6 VT, creighton, or Indiana is way easier than being ranked 15 and playing Texas A&M, UCLA, or teams from that caliber.

3 MAc teams in the bottom 10 ! that's impressive.
-
PeayNation, i'll give you the bottom line. The zips are unbeatabe at the JAR. In the last 2 years, the only team that was able to barely squeeze their luck and escape the JAR with a 2-point win was Nevada. They are #10. If you you are not #10 or better (which you are not), you have no hope. No disrespect intended but i don't think the Governors are any better than a good MAC team (OU or WMU) both of which we beat by more than 30 at the JAR.My predictions: Akron by 30 if our guys are on fire.Akron by 12 if we have an off game.

I don't know why you say that. We were on the bubble last year and have been there before.86-87, record 21-9...NIT87-88, record 21-7...No post season88-89, record 21-8...NIT05-06, record 23-10..NIT Fine, pretty new to the bubble as a MAC team. I would argue you weren't seriously on it last year, but that's splitting hairs. That's not splitting hair Ozoner, we definitely were not in the bubble last year especially after loosing to Nevada by 30 points. Our chances of getting an at large bid are like my chances of winning the lottery when i buy a ticket. You can't say that there is no chance but you don't build hopes on it.We don't have the respect yet, the MAC knows us by now and the sports writers who observe the MAC (that's not a whole lot of sports writers) also took notice, which explains the few votes we are getting in the AP poll for the last 4 weeks. In order to get the regular fan/writer to fear the roo, we have to win something. Win the MAC, go to the dance and make a nice showing... next year they will be like: "Akron, yeah... that's a good team."Another, less attractive scenario is to win the NIT or at least make it to the final four there. I don't recall any MAC team in the recent history making the final 4 in the NIT.

Can't 13Miami 4just under 12:00 in the first half. Miami is looking like a horrible bunch of streetball players. On a side note, is it me or is the "omni, omni omni omni" ala "ole, ole ole ole" the worst chant in the history of college basketball ?
-
One way to show TW that showing zips game is worth it is to switch to their service.
-
Miami all the way ! The game is on TW23
-
Not to burst your bubble but that number is for sold tickets.I would estimate the (butts in seats) attendance by 2300.
-
It says in the zipmail (sent to students) that the game is on.Also i just called the 972-snow and it clearly states that the bball game at the Jar will be played as scheduled.
-
Well then we need to make it a home-game feeling with HEAVY AK-ROWDY PRESENCE:screwks: :gun: See the thread from last year:The Q is our home
-
Bleacher Bum, i'm right behind you !
-
I am hoping that the lack of depth on the other teams is starting to show.Ohio has definitely not been the same in the last 3 games as it was in the beginning of the season. Their 5 starters are getting worn out night in night out... May be Can't is having the same problem. Maybe it's just hopeful thinking.
-
Are the broncos the same team we beated by double score at the JAR ? what happened to them ? taking OU to overtime and destroying Can't ! Nice.
-
Just came back from the game. Surprised that SGM didn't start a postgame thread, i'll take the torch. 1 - The 3 pieces of $hit wearing stripes wouldn't let us win the game. (details to be discussed later in the end of this post).2 - Dials was money. WOW !3 - Romeo and J-wood were very good and they should have taken the ball inside more often...we settled for the outside shot a lot.4 - Quade is unfortunately back in the last 2 years form. Lost on the court and doesn't know what he's doing. a little help from him could have won us the game.5 - Cedrick had the shot totally off. One good shot could have been the difference.6 - I am really concerned with KD's recruiting abilities. Our rotation currently consists of all senior/junior (besides Linhart). The Fr/So are unable to contribute anything. As far as the sophomores:a - Everytime Conyers is given a couple of minutes, he keeps throwing those 15 footers that never go in. b - I am the biggest fan of Linhart. I even got into arguments with people on this board defending him. But he is inconsistent and was very bad today.c - let's not talk about Rybak. As far as the Freshmen, 2 of them are redshirting and the third is also unable to contribute. The rowdies were really rowdy, we silenced the 8000 Toledo fans for 38 minutes. It was so sad that at the end of the game with few seconds left, their student section were pointing at us and chanting we can't hear you. That's right, 8000 people were hearing us for 38 minutes. Adding that they were sitting down for 38 minutes. Some thing the rowdies never do.Back to the officiating thing... Fear the Roo, i know you're going to jump on my case now with you being the unbiased voice of wisdom etc... but no ! seriously, i was there and i know what i am talking about.I would understand if a ref wants to call tic-tac fouls but at least call them on both sides. Look at the stats, we beat them in the FG%, (50% to 48.8%). We beat them in the FT% (90% to 70.4%). We beat them on the boards (28 to 25). We beat them in the steals (8-5) in the 3pt% (37.5 to 29.4). The only thing they beat us in was turnovers (9-13). The difference in the game was the fckin foul calls and their freakin 27 FT. It seemed like every time the difference grew beyond 5 points, the rockets will go to the FT line in every possession. Let alone the 2 freakin offensive fouls that don't make any sense. And when our post players get fouled and still score, there is a thing called (basket +1 shot) that was called 3 or 4 times on the other side but never our way.And i am not sure if Dru was fouled at the last second 3 point shot (because i saw it from a bad angle), but i am 100% sure that Cedrick was fouled couple of minutes before that on a similar shot.I am so tired and i have to go sleep. it is 1:24 am and Can't state and the MAC refs still suck.
